Other New Features
Beyond Windows Live Messenger, the Spring Update for Xbox 360 includes hundreds of new features and enhancements including:
A richer Achievement notification pop-up will showcase the name of the unlocked Achievement and the gamerscore value without needing to leave the game to check the Achievements list.
Enhanced family settings features for Xbox Live communications enable different defaults for video chat and voice chat.
A new Xbox Live Marketplace blade lets Xbox Live members access the content they seek—whether it is game content or TV shows and movies (available in the United States)—from one place on Xbox Live.
Updates to Xbox Live Arcade allow owners to quickly see which Xbox Live Arcade games their friends are playing and join in the fun. Xbox Live members can also compare progress of leaderboard scores and Achievements directly with all friends on their friends list. Expanded "Tell a Friend" capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.
Expanded "Tell a Friend" capabilities make it easier than ever to boast about Achievements and high scores.
A new option in Auto Downloads provides faster access to the entire collection of free, trial-version Xbox Live Arcade games.
New progressive download controls provide easy access to optimal viewing options by letting people fast-forward, rewind, pause and resume as their video is downloaded from Xbox Live Marketplace.
Extension of the background download functionality will allow owners to set their Xbox 360 console to turn off automatically after downloads are complete.

The Spring Update is free beginning the week of May 7 and will be easily accessible to every Xbox 360 owner through Xbox Live or on Xbox.com.

You may not even notice all the new features, but they are all designed to enhance your Xbox Live experience. Some of the other features in this upgrade include:
The name of game in tray is now displayed in the dashboard.
When the tray icon is highlighted, a list of achievements, game icon and gamerscore for that game is displayed.
Playback progress bar indicates download completion.
Improved skip forward, skip back functionality during video playback.
Switchable aspect ratio now available during video playback (Auto to Letterbox, Zoom, Stretch, Native).
Player and friends lists now quickly show session presence information for quick identification of users that are joinable.
Support for streaming WM-DRM protected content from a PC
Folder view for video content on connected devices
H.264 video support: Up to 15 Mbps, Baseline, Main, and High (up to level 4.1) Profiles with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 8 Mbps, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC and Main Profiles.
Show folder hierarchy for video content played from all devices.
Bookmarks are stored for each video that the user plays remembering the users last location in the file as well as the aspect ratio that the user choose for that file.
Video trick modes (fast forward, rewind, chapter skip) can now be used while downloading Video Marketplace content.
Skip forward and backward functionality has been improved to skip to the next or previous chapter. Each video is divided into 10 “chapters” allowing you to quickly skip around video content.
The information bar that is turned on via the On Screen Display (OSD) now shows you exactly where you are in the playback of the video file. In addition it will also show for Video Marketplace content how much of the file has been downloaded and where the “chapters” exist in the file.
Windows Media protected content (WM-DRM) can now be streamed from the PC to the console. If the WM-DRM license is missing or corrupted then a specific error message is displayed to the user. Bookmarking is also stored for protected content.
When the user is in the dashboard and an Xbox 360 game is in the console then the name of the game is displayed in the tray icon of the dashboard. If the user highlights the tray icon then achievements and gamer score are displayed for that game based on the signed in user. Xbox1 games show the name and image of the game.
Bookmarks are stored for each video that the user plays. The user can delete all bookmarks but this will reset all bookmark information for every video that the user has played. The bookmark database is exposed in the system/memory/system items
When a user selects an item for download from Marketplace then the system will determine if there is sufficient disk space for the item and, if not, will ask the user to delete content on the HDD. The system provides a sorted by size list of videos, game trailers, demos and arcade content to aid the user in the deletion process. The same list of items are also available from within memory so that users can quickly see which items are consuming the most disk space.
The console will block the user who attempts to download content onto a storage device that will never have the capacity to store the item without deducting any points associated with the content item.
The screensaver is disabled when playing photos from any source

It's a mystery to me why the tray icon didn't show the game name in the first place. It's also kinda neat that they're making it show Xbox1 games, but it'd be even better if they continued to update the back. compat..

Didn't you hear microsoft plans to basically give up completly on backwards compatibility by the end of this year? its some bullcrap about working on more important things. They promised around 100%, but i don't forsee that happening. Its not a good idea financially either, because a lot of people including me, would be willing to buy older titles.

oh that dashboard stuff sounds cool.

I know there was talk by Moore that at some point, you've got to look at what you have, and say "That's good enough." But the article in question was vague enough it didn't really say anything for certain, one way or another. If there's been a more recent article about this, I'd be keen to read it though.

All I need to be BC now are Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee, PoP: WW, and PoP: tTT. Then I can trade in my original Xbox.

I can understand them not really caring about PoP because they were multiplatform, but Xbox was the only way to play Munch's Oddysee. Unless you count the GBA release. Which I don't. Because there's really no way that they could be the same game.

You think? in the UK at least most of the major retailers stock next to no xbox games, apart from brand new releases (most of which have a 360 version anyway)

edit: glad you popped in threepio, are you able ot shed any light onto whether MS are still profiting from original Xbox games?

All the stores around here keep restocking them, so yes.

I see new Xbox games every time I browse the video games at Target, Best Buy, or EB.
Somebody's got to be buying them. Otherwise places would stop carrying them.

Hell, if they're BC I'm buying them because I got an original Xbox late in its life cycle and don't plan to hang on to it forever.

I want the rest of the PoP trilogy, and Jet Set Radio Future. The rest of my collection, I'm fine playing on the old Xbox, but those are the last few I really want to see on the BC list.

Hey Lewie, How've you been? :)

We regularly restock on Xbox titles, they are not considered legacy or clearance. Every Xbox title sold to us nets a profit to Microsoft for licensing and royalties.

A great deal of these titles are still not capable of being run on the 360. Therein lies the crux of the matter. It's my not-so-humble opinion that neither Sony nor Microsoft should be neglecting their back catalog. Devote the effort to make these titles compatible or else I shall shake my fist angrily!!

    Again!!

Cheers for that insight then, might just be a UK thing. I know that basically every non specialist retailer in the UK doesn't restock xbox games anymore, Woolworths cleared out almost all their games for £1-3, whsmith did a similar thing, HMV don't stock any Xbox games, and Virgin Megastore sold tonnes of games for £1, but have a small selection of recent titles at full price.

Some nice improvents. Looking forward to getting that keyboard thing, still not got around to buying a USB keyboard. Cool about the disk tray too. I personally don't really care about BC, I've only got the Halos and Ninja Gaiden Black, they work fine and I still rarely play them. But yeah, there are a few games I'd like to work (Oddworld Stranger's Wrath comes to mind). Still, nice evolution of the 360 service, I love the way it improves over time.

This seems like a good thread to ask in...

My 360 has started telling me that to play my 360 games I need to put them in a 360. It appears to be a DVD video track on the disc, presumably I'd get the same message if I popped it in a DVD player. With a little bit of reboot and pray I can usually get things going.

Does this mean that my 360 is starting to die?

If it is dead, should I be expecting Microsoft to care? It is 45 days outside its year warranty.

Probably. My first one started doing this, along with making a grinding noise whenever the DVD drive spun down. A month or so later, I got the three red lights of death. I'd call microsoft about it if you're still under warranty.

x264 and MPEG4 support. Depending upon how flexible it is (i.e. will it play them within AVI and MKV containers, and will it comprehend DivX5 and XviD, etc.), that could be totally spectacularly awesomely super-de-duper.

I would love to skip transcode360 to play most of my stuff from my media center. Transcode360 rocks, but if it worked natively, then I'd just need transcoding for really weird codecs. Man, if they could play MKV x264 files... that would just be groovy.

there's two slots next to the actual headphone jack.

I imagine those are those are data jacks. It shouldn't take much to send keyboard data over it.
