Is there a (preferably legal!) way of playing imported Wii games?
My wife is getting back in to Excitetruck in a big way and I modded my original Wii to play import games (mostly because Paper Mario took SO long to come out over here) but now that's lost to the attic it leaves me with some discs I can't play. One of those games is Excitebots, which I'm convinced she'd love.
I'm guessing the answer is 'no' but has anyone had any luck playing imported games?
(They are genuine originals, not any dubious copied shit)
You can modify the Wii U the same way you can a Wii. It is probably why Wii mode is so segregated from the rest of the Wii U console. I believe Nintendo is more aware of the changes made. Still, if all you do is remove region locking then you have broken no law, and Nintendo hasn't lost anything so I doubt they care either.
Well I was talking about Nintendo consoles, since they said that they region lock their systems 'these days'.
Everyone who's not Nintendo got with the times and stopped doing it. Meanwhile Nintendo went backwards and started locking their Handhelds as well as their Consoles.
I tried to play Fatal Frame 1 recently on PS3. I love the creepy atmosphere, but it was too much of a chore to control. I'd be all over a new game with good controls that makes interesting use of the gamepad.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
After firing out of the gate at the end of May, Mario Kart 8 had an even stronger second lap. The game was the top-selling physical software SKU in the U.S. in June, and sold more than 470,000 physical and digital units. This brings its lifetime total to more than 885,000 units in the U.S. alone. Mario Kart 8 is also driving new momentum for the Wii U platform and its library of great titles, which includes an industry-best 15 games with a Metacritic score of 85 or higher. Sales of hardware and software in June 2014 were up 233 percent and 373 percent, respectively, over June 2013. For the first half of the year, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by 48 percent and 129 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013.
“These results reinforce the power of the Mario Kart franchise and speak to a bright future for the Wii U platform,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “History has shown that Mario Kart games tend to have an extremely long tail. We fully expect Mario Kart 8 to continue to drive momentum for our hardware and software business through the holidays and into the foreseeable future.”
Nintendo 3DS also had a strong month: Hardware sales in June increased by more than 55 percent over sales in May, and Tomodachi Life sold more than 175,000 combined physical and digital units after launching on June 6.
Looking ahead to the rest of 2014, Wii U has a great lineup of upcoming games and amiibo, Nintendo’s foray into the toys-to-life category, that will help Nintendo build on its Mario Kart 8 momentum. Notable titles on the way include: Hyrule Warriors (Sept. 26), Bayonetta 2 (October), Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (Holiday) and Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Holiday). Likewise, three of the most anticipated games of the year are coming exclusively to Nintendo 3DS in 2014: Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS (Oct. 3) and Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire (Nov. 21).
*Data regarding physical sales of games in June are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo’s internal sales figures. All numbers, unless otherwise stated, are specific to the United States only.

I still need to remove region locking, because I still want to play Disaster: Day of Crisis.
That reminds me: Is the Nintendo 3DS region locked against DS games? The main thing I'm curious about is if I can import a copy of Last Window: The Secret of Cape West (Hotel Dusk's sequel) to play on my 3DS.
Of course, if Nintendo gets those DS games on Wii U going and allows us to play that here, that would solve a headache. Still, a playable copy on my shelf would be kinda nice regardless.

Just took Last Window off my shelf, stuck it in my American 3DSXL, it booted right up.
There are some exceptions to the region locking on the DS! Those exceptions being any game that utilizes DSi features. I was very surprised when I was in Japan and put Pokemon Black 2 in my 3DS, only for it to not work.
This only applies to the vast minority of games, but is still worth noting.
Saw a refurb U bundled with ZombiU for $260 on the gamestop site, if that catches anyones eye
Considering that ZombiU can be had for like $10 these days, you're still better off getting a refurb from Nintendo for $200, unless you've got Gamestop credit kicking around to use.

I've watched a couple of the original Japanese episodes. Sure, it's silly, but there are some nice 3D World secrets in a couple of the episodes.

But yeah, at least the Wii can be made region free. It's how I played Xenoblade and The Last Story before the American versions came out..

I was under the impression the PS3 and PS4 are region free? Is that not true?

Nintendo Handhelds were not region locked until the DSi.
The PS3, PS4, XBONE, PSP, and Vita have all been region free.

Enabling Homebrew and Region Unlocking isn't sketchy. It's just hacking a console you own.

I don't believe so, no.
Steam: pazython
That Mario voice sounds really familiar. My first thought was Salad Fingers, but there's some other animated character I'm thinking of.

Ah, that's it. Maybe not Conker himself, but definitely something in that game, using that voice modulator.

It sounds like L/N using a voice modulator from Deathnote.
Peach reminds me of Fiora (just more high pitched) from Xenoblade Chronicles :P But seriously, why are they both British? That's really weird
So far it's only on the EU eShop, so I guess Nintendo of Europe handled the localization, hence the British voice actors.
Fairly weak in a vacuum, but really freaking good by Wii U standards. Wonder if it'll hold up.
Doubtful. It may have another decent month for July, but I would imagine it'll be back to sub-100k levels until Smash rolls around.

That game is absolutely beautiful! The camera can be a little weird at times though, but still a fun, good looking game. Dat Link face
