I nearly forgot that the HDD is something I need to address. I've had a 250GB SSD set aside for the inevitable WiiU, but neglected to find an appropriate powered enclosure. It's a SATA model and its physical dimensions are laptop-drive-sized.

    Any suggestions? Solved!

Getting a SSD for my WiiU is awfully tempting, assuming it can properly use its speed...but even the nice, affordable 250gb EVO I got for my PC is about the same price as a 4tb external :rotate: so I dunno.

Search Amazon or Newegg for a powered enclosure. Most of the laptop drive sized ones are not powered, so you might end up with a bigger enclosure meant for a desktop size drive, but it should still work.

Actually I don't need an enclosure! In the words of many a Genome Soldier, "It's just a box!". It seems like I want more of a USB /SATA docking station. Anyone have a model they like?

Edit: looks like a familiar brand has me covered. Powered USB 2.0 SATA docking station.

Thanks, @absolutezero, your post sparked my memory about this option.

    http://nintendoeverything.com/nintendo-working-on-a-mii-focused-smart-device-app-for-release-in-2015/
Nintendo is developing a Mii-focused smart device app that will be released in 2015, president Satoru Iwata revealed during the company’s financial results briefing earlier this week.

Nintendo originally hoped to have the app sometime this year. However, the amount of ideas grew as development progressed, and a decision was made to bring them all to fruition while also adding polish to avoid launching a half-baked product. Iwata said that Nintendo wants to get things right since this is their first time and they want to reach as many consumers as possible. Rather than “doing business” on smart devices, Nintendo instead wants to strengthen the connection between the company and consumers.

Iwata’s comments came about while speaking about Nintendo’s Japanese homepage and how there currently isn’t a mobile version. This is something that will be addressed before the end of the year.

    http://nintendoeverything.com/miyamoto-on-dev-time-spin-off-games-for-major-franchises-plenty-of-wii-u-games-next-year/
"On development time, we have already completed the step of learning new development techniques. So, we should experience less developmental delays stemming from learning new hardware. From now on, it becomes a matter of if we can use our experience efficiently and one part of our plan to do so is to use ‘spin off games’, which allow us to use our major title franchises, but create on a smaller scale and we are working hard on making these sort of derived products. In this way, we are preparing to expand on our characters while also increasing the number of software we output and allowing our customers to have their next experiences in certain franchises without waiting three years.

We are also working more and more with many different 3rd party companies to produce our titles [note: this seems to refer to outsourcing stuff like asset creation, cut-scenes, etc] and from this year we have begun to work with some software developers for the very first time. We are in the process of creating a system where we are actively seeking outside assistance to help us create an abundance of major titles. I feel that next year’s Wii U titles are plentiful. We will continue working hard."

That's awesome, that's exactly what they need to do. Do more like Bayonetta 2 and Devil's Third, more like Namco on Smash Bros and Team Ninja on Hyrule Warriors. Grab Capcom and Konami too!

You're not supposed to connect or disconnect it at all while the system's running but otherwise it's fine to have it not connected so if you're okay with the hassle of turning it on and off every time you can swap around games

You could just leave it always connected and run your games directly off the HDD.

If you're really opposed to the space that the HDD takes up, you may be more inclined to invest in an SD card as your alternative memory source. Also, you could just delete games you don't play anymore and redownload the ones that you want to play as time permits.

Not the best options, but options.

I'm almost certain that the SD slot is only for Wii compatibility, the Wii U doesn't do anything with it at all. I don't even think there are any options in the settings for doing anything with the SD card.

I am real tempted to get a Wii U basic actually. The hard drive is restrictive, but to be honest I rarely buy digital anyway, and the white case is much more attractive IMO.

Plus it's a fair bit cheaper - £170 compared to the £240 32GB+MK8 or Mario Bros.

It might be restrictive with 8 gbs ram. 7 gbs are already taken up by the OS and the software that's already downloaded.

I'm not quite sure what data is placed on the machine by VC games and game discs, but I wouldn't take that risk with the knowledge that Nintendo has discontinued making the 8 gb basic themselves because of the impracticality.

    Has anyone posted this?

    Wii U 32GB Black Deluxe Set w/ Super Mario 3D World & Nintendo Land - $269.99

Easily the best deal in some time.

Here in Louisiana, the Refub from Nintendo will run you $213.20 ($200 + $5 shipping + $8.20 Tax). Add in the missing charge cradle and Super Mario 3D World to match the eBay deal and it comes out to about $283.44 after tax.

    Plus it's...brand new, not refurbished.

I misread, it has 4.7 gbs used. According to Tom's hardware, the remaining space cannot hold Nintendo Land download.

Can bus-powered hard disc drives be used with Wii U?

Some bus-powered hard disc drives draw more current than the USB 2.0 specification and might not run stably, so we cannot guarantee that such devices will run properly on Wii U without the use of a supplemental power cable called a y-cable that draws power from two USB ports. For best results, we recommend using a hard drive with its own power supply that connects to the Wii U system via the USB port on the console.
