How come Nintendo ships its games on Mondays but you can never find a store willing to sell you a new game on Monday? Best Buy and Walmart say it goes on sale tomorrow and Target wants me to wait till Thursday.

wtf?
If it's shipping, doesn't it take time to get to the store?
I really doubt they are shipping all their games one day before they go retail.
Well...
You're wrong
Because that's exactly what happens many times. When you see a ship-date (which is clearly different from a release date) you can expect to usually find the game in EBStop the next day when their shipment comes in.
In rare cases certain stores will get certain things ahead of time (pokemon, console launches), but seriously.
Dunno why, sure, but with games release date usually translates to ship date which usually means, for a monday date, games won't show til late/midday tuesday, might not get shelved til Wed.

Because the stores have to pay for shipping and they're not going to pay for same day. And Nintendo actually ships LATER then they could, most companies would have had it out the week before.
Pokemon D/P is shipping on the 16th but there's a street day of the 22nd for it, too. Nintendo has much shittier shipping then other places.

Sure, but when a record company says a CD comes out on Tuesday, they mean you can buy it on Tuesday.
I really doubt they are shipping all their games one day before they go retail.
That's because they're referring to a street date. Most places get CDs and DVDs in several days before they can actually sell them. Most video games don't have street dates, just shipping dates.

Again, if they pay for next day shipping. They're really cutting back on that recently. Any budget titles or "not hot" titles get regular shipping so you have to wait a week or more for them to get in.

For whatever reason the CD and DVD industries have set a universal date (Tuesday) that new product is released. The product is actually shipped to the store days, sometimes even weeks before hand.
The video game industry is different, since they ship out their stuff whenever they feel like it (usually early in the week), but when it arrives is anyone's guess.

Well that answers that conundrum.
That's pretty fucked up. Make the game industry look like the minor leagues compared to the record industry. Hell, comic books might get pushed back all the time, but at least they have a standard street date.

Is it tho? That means (sort of) the games get out as soon as the store gets them whereas with CD's etc it's a few days after.
Actually, games probably ship to retail warehouses days in advance of the "shipping date" you see on Ebgames/Best Buy/etc... websites. That date is really just the date that they decide to ship to th consumer and to their stores. If the game actually shipped from Nintendo/Sony/MS on the ship date stores would never be able to get the games the day after the ship date...
I blame EbStop/Best Buy/etc... for listing a ship date on their websites. They should just list a release date, which is when the game will actually be in stores or hypothetically arrive if you ordered via the internet. That's what the movie and CD industry does.
Are games the only media that does not appear in stores on it's "release date"? Why do game companies bother telling us the "ship date". Nobody cares when the game is shipping; we want to know when we can buy the game. Do movies and books do this too?
Uh, DVD/everything else: Hey we got this movie weeks ago but need to wait for the release date.
Games: We ship it out the day we say we will, so you can buy it as soon as it gets to the store.
I like the games version more. Popular games use the everything else policy of shipping things a week or two early then holding them until release date. then shit happens where people sell them early then everyone gets pissed and in trouble.

Haven't many stores already recieved their initial allotment of Pokemon games, for at least a week now?
Games usually come out Tuesday. Often they are shipped the day before. Sometimes they're shipped much earlier and stores hang onto them for a week or so. Who the fuck cares?

People who want to play the game, what type of retarded question is that?

I don't have a care. I rely on public transportation which can take a chunk out of my day. It's nice to know if, say, Pokemon is out on the 22nd or won't be in stores until the 23rd. I have to make sure I have enough time to actually get there and not mess up the rest of my schedule for the day.

So this thread is just a summary of 'lack of patience'?

Because they're not always available on Tuesday. Since games are shipped so late, the tiniest hiccup in the shipping process can delay it.

Not if they use the transporter.

EDIT: Gosh, I'm late.

I'd rather wait a week or so longer and KNOW when I can go get it instead of playing a damn guessing game until I find it.
And on some big releases (Halo 2), they arrive in time for a specified release, so it's not like it CAN'T be done...

I want my papery waggle, damn it!
I remember when about every single store jumped the date for Super Mario Advance 4 (Mario 3). Must have pissed them off.
And you'd think that SPM might be released BEFORE Easter, so people would buy it to play over the long weekend, rather than after, when... they won't.
