the 2017 slate of candidates is definitely less compelling than last time's
I wish Sinning Jenny was Mayor For Life, but if the Jovial Contrarian or the Bishop of Southwark were running in this election I'd be voting for them in a heartbeat

the campaigner isn't an anarchist, but
she used to have a very close friend (possibly more than friend?) who helped her with her temperance campaigns. after he died permanently and suddenly it came out that he was in fact March of the Calender Council, who while operating openly against alcohol was also leading revolutionary efforts against Mr. Wines. The campaigner is thus both ashamed and conflicted about the unkown association with the revolutionaries; it all came out last hallowmas during confession time

Well, the good news is that after the election they have a small write in section on the forum where you can suggest candidates for next year. I know Fedducci was suggested last time, so here he is.
Anyone have any top candidates they would like to see next year?

That would require him to actually move around in public, and he doesn't do that. I'd nominate the royal beth manager, the kashmiri princess, and some urchin or other.
I would vote for the Royal Beth Manager in a heartbeat, but I don't think he would want to run. That is a man that knows that heavy is the head that wears the crown. I doubt it would be something he would want to repeat.

The guy on the other forum says she's actively associating with the revolutionaries this time around.

Oh wow, I hadn't really played through Sinning Jenny's school since the month the Empress's Shadow story came out. I'd either forgotten or never realized that it completely refills your opp deck. This is going to make my favor grind a lot easier (I have a somewhat urgent need to get Renown: Hell up to 10 so I can unlock "The Prince Of..." action in Spite, which was how I got the 1000 souls a pop needed for my Redeemer of Souls card).
Also if I keep at it long enough maybe it will finally let me select a candidate. :P I've already leveled up as a Fixer but apparently I'm a free agent at the moment.
That's odd. You should be able to pick a candidate from one of the Silver Lined cards at the top of your list of actions. You shouldn't need to wait for an opportunity card to appear. I know I didn't have to do that.
Oh yeah I can do that, remind me what I need to do

Ah, thank you, that got my scandal down to 3.5-ish. Helping me with that raises your scandal too, doesn't it? If you want to send some requests for help with scandal my way, I'd be willing to return the favor.
Quick notice, if any Campaigners for our Dauntless Temperance Campaigners still need donations to their cause, please feel free to request them from me. I am happy to give until it hurts.
Unfortunately, I can't help any other campaigners for other candidates, but if anyone feels like switching over to the Temperance cause, I would be happy to assist.

This is strange. When I try to accept your offer to help me with my wounds, I get brought to this:
and I can't do anything to accept the offer.

So i remember reading the first few posts of this thread a while ago and it sounding interesting, so i just got this and tried it out. Fun!
My first ship got eaten by pirates pretty quickly. I've explored a decent chunk so far on my second ship but I'm still only barely treading water (heh) since I'm not really upgrading anything other than my crewmates with secrets.
And i can't find a town i have several quests for that in the first game was just outside London but now didn't appear to be anywhere in the northwest quadrant of the map. Doh!
As a new player, is there any point in signing up with an account to get stories, out if that more for veterans they have already done everything the is to do? Can i paint myself into a corner by playing "wrong" so my next captain is permanently screwed?
...I just realized that you can only send angry mobs at other Agitators, and I seem to have none on my friend's list. Anyone feel like getting beaten until they vote for Feducci? I'll of course be happy to be attacked by angry mobs in return :P

Signing up with a Fallen London account I think lets you download all the stories that have been patched in since the game launched, or at least it used to, so I would definitely recommend it. There are a couple small interactions between the games themselves (your FL character can sell a mysterious box that all your future captains then start with, and I think there's another interaction going the other way as well) but they aren't huge or essential, just kind of nice to have.
What is the town you're looking for?
New captains are never permanently screwed. The worst possible start you can have is just the "new game" game state where you start with the shittiest ship and 250 Echoes; any other change is a step above that.

It was Corsairs Rest in a pirate sea. First game it was a screen away. I eventually found it, halfway across the map. Barely made it home alive with 5 hull remaining.
I now have every officer type, cat mascot instead of ferret (cat beat up some pirates for me on land!), have upgraded to next best deck gun, foolishly purchased a forward gun before realizing i don't have a forward slot (still original boat), purchased a torpedo net ) the pirates hit me with a couple of these, they HURT), purchased a better flashlight. Have Admiralty total at 8, and University at 4. Iron is my best stat at 70 (can now one shot the small crabs), heart is next at 40, rest are way lower. A few story lines have opened up but i don't have the odball resources to pursue them yet, like the basement of the odd sisters house.
Can i sail up what i assume it's the Themes river? Looks like i should be able to buy don't want to take hull damage just to try.
I'm annoyed they there are places on the map that remain black even though I've sailed through them at great risk.
I also assume i should give the giant sea monsters a very wide berth until i have the equivalent of a battleship.

It sounds like you're coming right along! That's excellent.
You can sail a little ways up the Thames - not far, but exploring and marking the landmarks around it is worth a decent chunk of scraps. And you don't need a battleship for the bigger monsters; in fact, the ship a couple or three up from the starter, the Corvette, you can really start wrecking their day as long as you stay attentive and agile (don't get surprised, loop around behind them, stay out of the way of attacks, etc). When you can start reliably killing big monsters the game really opens up. Lorn-Flukes (big sea urchins) are easy to kill and give a Fluke-Core worth 5 secrets on death!
There are exceptions. Stay away from Birds of Paradise, the blue parrot things that flock around the southern shore. They are a nightmare even for battleships. Avoid Mt. Nomad until you have either enough armor to take its punishing attacks or the fastest avaiable engines with which to dodge it.
Some of your officers' stories give you a big leg up. Try to finish the Irrepressible Cannoneer's asap.

you can't sail up the Thames to any real degree but you can sail around the Cumaean Canal to an extent
most sea monsters (excepting those with ranged attacks or high speed charges, like Mt. Nomad or the Tree of Ages) can actually be fought as long as you know how even with a weak boat: lights off to avoid drawing their attention until you're ready to fire, be floating backwards so you can keep them in range as they chase you while you shoot them, lights on once you have their full attention since that speeds up your firing solutions; higher level boats just give you a lot of hp as a buffer
also turn your lights on if you're looking at a darkened place on the map because that extends your sight range and might get you the one spot you need to reveal to mark it down on your map
Yeah my lights i turn off usually when I'm hurting and know danger is around. After how my first game went down i expected to be dead a lot sooner on my second guy, but somehow i survived so far.

Wow, the mayoral election is heating up. I just accepted an offer to debate. I hope I acquit myself well for the side of justice and temperance.
I'm dividing my time between election stuff and trying to claw my way up the Notability ladder. I'm at Notability 13 right now, gunning for 14, and it feels like summiting a mountain. But once I hit 15 and get my bonus to Watchful I am looking forward to telling the Amanuensis to fuck off.
