it's not competitive. at all! I already showed you an example of where frozen orb does a fraction of the damage of what an end game set+weapon does. on my crusader with fotf I can spam a 2900% damage attack. but oh no that 880% damage frozen orb is too strong(by the way the damage on frozen orb wasn't changed at all, it still does 880% damage). that's lunacy. frozen orb in its previous state was easier to do damage with and a better chill effect. the damage was the same. and said damage does not compare at all to any end game builds. it never did, frozen orb was never really usable past t4.
(that's the cue for everyone to stop bickering over video games)

The Frozen Orb nerfs are kinda like the Acid Rain nerfs that WD got.
Damage got buffed to 300% initial + 360% damage over 3 seconds, but the DoT doesn't stack. The proc rate got taken from 2.8x to 0.2x. Then they replaced Vision's Quest 300% mana regen with 30% mana regeneration, and then nerfed WD mana regeneration on items, but kept the skill at 175 mana cost.

it's also not fair to compare 3x holy shotgun to frozen orb, because the point trying to be made was that orb was overpowered without any supporting legendary combos
without fotf shotgun does 960% for 40 wrath vs. 880% at 30 arcane power
given the costs and wizard's resource regen i would say frozen orb is better than shotgun baseline but nowhere near overpowered
and the fact that it has no supporting legendaries makes it shit overall

jaetch had a long post about wizards after the third ptr revision and the tl;dr really is besides spenders needing another pass (especially arcane orb) is there needs to be itemization to match what fire gets to make arcane/lightning/frost worth specing
fire has the least wizard runes but yet its the itemization that makes it the best.
I just hope Blizz drops this silly notion that we most have limited stash space and either really ramps up the amount we have or makes it infinite. As it stands there just isn't enough and it's only going to get worse with the next patch and incoming seasons. We pretty much have greater rift keys that will clog up space and then each season is going to add new legendary items. On top of that, they are fixing the trash legendary items, so we may get stuck running out of stash space really quick when almost every item has some potential (there currently is and still will be items with effects, where once you're hitting BiS gear, they might as well be auto souls). I'm not even sure making potions, keys, gems and mats stack infinitely would help much once we hit that scenario.
It's also going to make the current RNG model even worse as we progress in seasons because legendary items seldom drop, you have no control over what drops, it isn't always smart loot and the pool of legendary items is just going to get bigger.
Both are problematic because there are items that are build enabling and in some cases a build requires more than one item. For instance, Holy Shotgun requires more than just Fate of the Fell, it requires being able to get 6p Akkhan bonus and with the the needed CDR, that requires a RoRG in order to get access to more CDR options. Reaper Wraps are also pretty much required for the build. Don't have one of those key items, then some of that, if not all of that gear, may just end up sitting in the stash until you find the missing pieces.
I would argue that the thing which made frozen orb extremely powerful at the xpac drop was the huge, huge range. The explosion was seriously like a third of the whole screen.
I mean, the explosion wasn't full damage, you still needed to aim it right to hit for the full 880, but it definitely overshadowed other wizard spells when the expansion dropped.
@Shadowfire was playing cold wiz for a while with Light of Grace and some other pieces. Who cares as long as you are having fun?

Yea, I was running a cold wizard for quite a while and loved it. I ran Ray of Frost with either Black Ice or Snow Blast (I think the latter gave me a better damage increase, but both were pretty good), Black Hole (Absolute Zero), Frost Hydra, Magic Weapon (Deflection), Energy Armor (Power of the Storm), and either Teleport or Mirror Image depending on my mood. The idea was to drop Frost Hydra to start the damage and chill, use Absolute Zero to suck them in together and give me the damage bonus buff, and then mow them down with RoF. The thing is, I needed a couple of pieces to make it work, namely some AP on Crit bonuses. I got to the point that my AP would never drop, so I could keep RoF going almost indefinitely.
I could handle T3 and T4, but what held me back was squishiness. My gear was rough enough that I could never get more than 180k health, and a single ranged attack would utterly destroy me. And, of course with channeling attacks, you stand still forever, so I died a lot. But still, saying cold wizards aren't viable? I'm not sure that's necessarily true. You lose a bit of damage, but gain a lot of crowd control.
Edit: what I needed to make the build really work was either a Rimeheart (hah!), or even better, Serpent Sparker. Thunderfury was great and all, but those would have taken my damage over the top.
I mean, I made a cold wizard build that could survive T5 no problem.... but switching to fire resulted in clearing rifts 2-3x faster. And with a decent group I can actually do t6 with my fire build - I wouldn't even think of going cold in T6. Not right now anyways.
I'm not trying to be argumentative or anything. If you have fun with a build then for sure go with it, there is nothing wrong with that.
Slow night for leggos. I went a full 3 hours without one, my best record yet, and then got a pair of boj's. Then I got my first pair of fart pants and while the damage roll is low, it is still a nice replacement 1 item set piece I had as a filler. Eventually I'll get vyr's or firebird and switch it for those.
Really looking forward to this patch. It's not slightly frustrating to pretty well outgear my crusader yet only manage to do fractions of her damage, while taking significantly more. I still wish they would do much more boosting of the wizard signature abilities, since they're all awful for damage, but at least it seems like good stuff is coming out of the spender changes.
Probably could find a community that split farms Act IV normal for keys. If you just need keys normal, is probably the way to go for the quickest accumulation of them. Plus, it's the catch act as far as caches go, so you might get one of the decent or good legs (low chances but still).
After rolling with a crappy 92% Jeram's the last few months a slightly better one dropped yesterday (even though the 6% crit took ~8 millions to show up )
Today this baby fell out of a RiF guardian ...and the crit came out in 3 tries.
Tyty, but I think I bottomed out my luck quota with those two Jerams so I won't ever see a better Helltooth Mantle (or any sort of upgrade piece) no matter how many shards I spend in the next two months...
Is there something I'm not getting about copying characters to the PTR if you already have some there? I thought it would overwrite and copy everything from live when you click the button, but nothing seems to have changed and I'm on the 24 hour timer now =/

you won't get totally fresh copies, they are usually a day or few days older than what is currently live
Since it applies regular damage done as a new stacking dot over 3 seconds, and the max infinite dot is 3000% every second, does that mean that you need to do 9000% fire damage to reach it? Or is it more complicated than that, being that it involves evil evil math numbers.
I'm kinda tempted to try out the ptr. I want to see what the pet AI is like and it would be fun to see if I can get a ramaldini's gift for my SMK. The flip side of that is time spent on the ptr is time not spent gambling on a TNT.....
Thanks to all the guildies who I had a blast with tonight. Was nice to collaborate, share some loot, and get one shoot by meteor demons from the sky together.
Yes, once you've applied 9000% weapon damage, you'll have an infinite dot of 3000% weapon damage/s.
It's insane how powerful it is, I can't see anything else that comes close. I don't see how any other element would be possible next patch.

Quick question about RoS. What happened to the charlatan trying to scam people out of their money back in the safe area? At one point he was there and then next time I was in camp he was gone. I saw him under guard at the upper part of the area, but no explanation as to what happened, though it's pretty easy to guess. Same with the two guys that were talking about jumping someone, I missed most of that conversation, if anybody could give me the broad strokes on that, I'd appreciate it.

You do get to see all of it but you have to go back frequently, more so than quests indicate. There is similar stuff in other acts.

Decided to roll a couple of rifts tonight instead of going directly to rune factory 4
As if to compensate for 3 hours of no legendaries last night, I got 9 tonight out of 2 rifts. 5 from the first, 4 from the second. Pretty sure that's also a personal record. Unfortunately, none of them were worth keeping. A Sun Keeper that was inferior to the one I've got banked. The only one I did decide to hold on to was
The scourge, obviously, not the axe. I don't know if the proc is any good, but it has a very nice natural damage roll and some RCD. Might be worth having some day down the road post-patch if I wanna play with a 2her and have a spare gift to roll the existing socket into Damage %. Though, any 2her that isn't Maximus for a non-crusader is probably a bad idea.
I included that axe in my screenshot because I'd like some opinions on it. Worth keeping, now that it's pretty cheap/easy to forge stuff? High damage roll, but bare minimum fire damage. I could see using a gift on it and changing the socket to damage %, but I don't know how much the minimum fire % hurts. My guess is not much, and the near perfect base damage easily makes up. Elemental damage seems to drop off above 100% by a lot, and I'm already sitting at 89% without my firebird source.

You've already rerolled the damage on the Sank, you can't now roll the socket into something else and then Ramaladni's Gift it.
I had a scourge on my sader twice, once for lvling and once before getting FotF. It seems to work well enough if you don't hav ea better weapon. Plus, if you get a spare gift you're willing to use on a random weapon, then you can actually make that better.

For real. Playing Diablo with merchies makes the game so much fuckin better. Even in AU TZ, there's people online to shoot the with and run rifts with.
Not that I would expect any different from a PA community but y'all are rad dudes and dudettes

Like completely useless
In fact cold at all on a wizard is useless. And i tried really hard to make it work.

it seems like there isn't a fire damage energy twister like I thought there was
gale force increases fire damage by 15% as a debuff, but is apparently still arcane damage itself. I can't find anything that says otherwise.
that'd be a pretty big bummer, coulda sworn there was a fire damage one in 2.1. there's a rune for the other two elements.
