Alright, the "Old Iron King" DLC hub is already accessible ingame.
POTENTIAL OLD IRON KING SPOILERS
Spoilers about the DLC access point:
Pictures of the Hub:
The text on the plaques reads (potentially out of order):
"Forbidden is the path to the ancient King's domain
With water dry, and path amiss, woeful temptation is dismissed
In the tower of the Old Iron King resides a Child of Dark
Tresspassers will face adversity befitting a Monarch"
This is almost the exact same wording as that on the plaques outside of Shulva, except for the second to last line, which read:
"The City of the Sunken King sleeps, as does the Dragon within"
Spoilers about the hub inside the DLC:
Things of note:
The aesthetic of the door in front of the actual DLC area is the exact same as that of the door in front of Shulva. Similarely, the statues that allow you to be summoned into the DLC area look exactly the same.
There are 2 rooms with statues bringing DLC and non-DLC owning players together. This could mean that there are 2 boss fights that players that don't own the DLC can participate in and potentially get DLC items from.
The plaques around the Shulva access point described the main boss of the DLC, Sinh. Here we only get a mention of another "Shard of manus", meaning that this one might make for a more difficult fight. Mayhaps that means we'll also get more information on it and the world in general? With Sinh, the entire city revolved around him - the aesthetic, enemies, items...

Just summoned a dragon dude, got him down to about a third of his health and he ran off into the iron keep from the bridge to hide behind the alonne knights to estus.
I don't understand doing that when you're dropping a sign down. It's a bitch move in general, but especially dropping a sign. Who's going to hit that sign again after that?
Actually, that dude aside, the bridge seems way less try-hardy than it is in the peak hours. Had one guy put away his normal weapons and pull out a rapier so we could have a fencing match. I actually managed to get a couple of scales.

because the "no heals" honour code thing is kind of silly bullshit AND lots of people don't have the faintest idea that's even a thing

The way I see it, the "Honor" code only applies to summon signs. You invade me with a cracked stone? Go all out heal, whatever. You're trying to fuck me. I get that.
A SIGN though is different. I invited you, and you're gonna waste my time like that? You're a goose. And people probably will not summon you a second time, drastically reducing your chance of getting the items you need.

No it's not. This is one of the changes I absolutely LOVE. Why should I essentialy fight, say, 4 duels when someone estus-es back to full health 5-6 times for my dragonscale/souls/points in my covenant? It's supposed to be a simple fight to the death. You either win or lose, then quit or summon the next phantom. That's something the arena gets right, why on earth should you give players an *almost* free reset button?
The only thing that justifies this is that you don't lose any dragonscales upon dying, in contrast to the BoB arena.
It might be annoying, but that's how the game works. I don't think there's any grounds to criticize a player who heals if it's going to help him win.
If the game shuts down an invader's healing options or whatever, that's fine too.
There are items you can use to prevent enemy healing, are there not? And tactics you can use to punish attempts to heal, though like many parts of the game, that might collapse at high levels.

Estus just isn't balanced very well for PvP. People can easily heal while avoiding any kind of punishment, especially at high levels. Unless you surprise them with a quick high damage spell, I guess.

Techincally yes. I'd never send anyone hatemail because he heals in a duel. It's something the game allows so I have to deal with it. That doesn't mean that A. I can't complain to the developers and explain why it's the dumbest idea ever and B. that it's an extremely cowardly and lame move on my opponents side.
Like I said - it's nothing else than a free reset button. You know what I do when I'm losing the fight? Nothing. At least nothing differently. I keep fighting. Most of the time I get my ass handed to me, maybe getting in one or two more final hits. Very rarely I can still turn the tide and win. It doesn't matter if I win or lose, I accept that I've played worse than my opponent and deal with it. Too bad 50% of the players you meet in non-arena summon-sign PVP are complete cowards.
Now, this is strictly talking about WILLING PVP. Dragon eyes or red summon signs. If a player invades someone else as a red phantom against their will I'd *encourage* the host to heal up if possible - he just (presumably) wanted to play in peace, and along comes this asshole. By all means possible, kick that guy out of your world!
Mostly, Estusing constantly in a one-on-one is bloody boring, is the thing. It makes each fight last four times as long. THAT's why the honor code sprung up out of nowhere and most people I see seem to instinctively follow it. Because most people don't particularly want a fight to go on for ten minutes.
To me, hiding behind the world's monsters and healing is fighting smart. I've had it done to me before, and I try to remember to clear out the area before I summon anyone to fight.
I know why the duel community exists, and that having shorter fights is nice, but you can hardly blame someone for not abiding by that community's rules. It's not mandatory. It doesn't make them "cowardly" to use one of the game's most powerful tools to try to win a fight. You were the one who let them into your game knowing they were going to try to put a sword in your eye!
It's fair to object to the fact that the game permits summoned opponents to heal, but making use of the current game state is not a sin. I can't blame all the end game players for running around with anti-backstab armour and parry bananas, either.

if a host chooses to fight a summoned opponent in an area that can be easily exploited by the phantom to find a corner to cast warmth/great heal in, that's entirely on the host since they get to pick the field. oddly enough, probably one of the best areas to prevent this sort of thing was added in the DLC - namely, the bonfire area right before sinh is really tiny and walled off from sinh and the queen's areas.
I guess dragon covenant players can just flask still (which can still be punished by most builds, when they start to fidget backwards like they want to flask just hug their face and get the backstab) but honestly I don't ever summon dragon cov members since they're generally pve players who just suck flasks and time. I hope that doesn't sound lame but almost all the good pvp'ers are BoB and the occasional rank 3 blue sentinel.

guys, the dragon cov gives you a ring that boosts estus.
Shut. Up. About. Dragon. Cov.
Do not pvp with dragons if you hate estus.
They did not nerf dragon cov estus drinking for a very good reason.
Live with it. It will never go away.
I support the arena nerfs btw. They're based on kill death ratio. I still think it made sense because it taught you how to deal with invadee estus drinking, but in the end nobody invades anyway so that fell through.

(PSN: Morninglord) (Steam: Morninglord) (WiiU: Morninglord22) I like to record and toss up a lot of random gaming videos here.
I've had maybe 2 dragon cov members drink flasks out of like 60-70 matches, so your mileage may vary. It didn't really bother me when they did cause I didn't and still won anyway both times hah

can you elaborate on this, just out of curiosity. are you saying there was an obvious correlation between BoB win rates and constant flasking? pretty much everyone I dueled in BoB arena pre-nerf would flask if possible, including me if I got messed up in an opener. now I just put warmth fields down and zone people away from them as I slowly heal to full.

No man, I mean rank in bob is based on kills to deaths. Every loss puts you further away from the next rank.

yeah, in my experience dragons almost never estus
it's not like this obscure thing i have or anything, i think estus is widely accepted to be kind of a dick move

that's not true at all
if i want to level up the dragon covenant i have to go where signs are (or put mine down somewhere else and pray someone even sees it). i've seen the aerie recommended for dragon duels on occasion, but i've seen absolutely nothing there on most trips. it's iron keep bridge or bust as far as i can tell.

not gonna lie, that is annoying as hell too
and it usually fails, since there's really no practical method of keeping someone out of a warmth for any significant amount of time
which means we're both probably gonna end up back to full
and anything we do until the warmth puffs out is gonna count for fuck all unless it's some kind of lol shadow dagger backstab OHKO i guess
i had one guy in the arena casting warmth so frequently that i ended up just going afk
if it's an invasion or a bellbro curbstomp or whatever, by all means, chug away, but in a pvp match sought out by both players, healing up is just being a dink

they want it to be there isn't a good reason imo
i think there are practical and technical reasons that might be there for keeping it. which, okay. that the developers are encouraging it is both true, and proof that the developers are often wrong about things
Clear the level, make sure you have something ranged and fast to punish them for holding still for 2 seconds while they drink. It's a part of the game, hate it all you want, adjust your gameplay to deal with it, just like you should when people bust out their monastery scimitar.

yes but i am saying you are wrong in claiming they are wrong
its part of the game
its a part you don't like
that is why they adjusted other parts of the game for you
there is a fallacy that you must like all parts of a game
this is not true
there can be bits for other personalities, for other interests and likes, for people who are rewarded by it that you are not, that you cannot even understand or emphasise with
and this is okay. this is allowed. this is right
just avoid those bits
but stop trying to claim they are wrong
because then you are trying to assert your view, your moral take on the world, your ideas, on everyone else.
you do not have the right to do this thing
and they have no obligation to agree with you
so the whole thing becomes an endless pointless circle
and i think its about time we all realised that and stopped.

yeah I rethought that remark on it being the host's prerogative to pick the area almost immediately after posting it since it's true most people just rely on iron keep which is prime for healing up behind alonne dudes. I did that until I got bored months ago, and now I'll invade and put down signs all over the place rather than deal with the iron keep meta, buuuuuut it was kind of silly of me to just assume that most dragon cov players don't want to grind the wins out quickly.
I definitely disagree with your comments on warmth field camping, though; longer weapons and more poke-oriented builds can get a lot out of using it. my latest character that I'm going to be playing the DLC with tomorrow simply powerstances two spears with 40 dex and 2500 health, and if I want to reset a hit I didn't want to take I can lay warmth down and hit people for 400-600 (more if I pick up counter damage) as they come in trying to press an advantage. all I have to do to keep people out of the warmth radius is shove L1's at them and if they're spending all their stamina rolling away or backstab fishing they're not hitting me and I'm still healing.
Clear the level, make sure you have something ranged and fast to punish them for holding still for 2 seconds while they drink. It's a part of the game, hate it all you want, adjust your gameplay to deal with it, just like you should when people bust out their monastery scimitar.
i kind of doubt even a forbidden sun to the face or a backstab would be enough to power through the regen of a multiple estus chug
which can be achieved by breaking line of sight for like, a second

most people that compulsively chug estus are going to be bad enough that you can immediately pressure them down to the same level and then literally just sprint at their face until they either swing at you, you land a combo on them if they just stop doing things and panic, or you backstab them immediately upon the animation startup and they get one chug off max. it's been a very long time since I lost to someone who is obviously just using multiple health bars as a crutch because very few people who do that can get away with it multiple times - eventually they'll just have low enough health that you'll finish them halfway through the drink animation, and if that doesn't or can't happen you might want to look into a higher damage build.
I used to think mages were a completely dead/negated pvp archetype until I came back for the DLC and quickly realized that a few people had finally figured out the combo to instagib other players, i.e. putting homing soulmass on, using homing soul arrow to mess with people's roll timings and then following it up with a soul spear and some crystal magic weapon stabs while soulmass stunlocks you. I also ended up making the 100% magic resist shield and my winrate went up to probably 2 in 3, but occasionally you just get overwhelmed and it's pretty much impossible to reset with estus or warmth against some guy spamming rapier r1 in your face after doing 1500+ damage.
yeah, in my experience it's homing soul mass preloaded, a crystal soul spear as you're rolling, probably followed by a soul greatsword all in the space of like four seconds
I don't know how you pvp with fists morninglord but man it's the worst for me
Got invaded just now while running to try to get some coop souls at the iron keep final boss
Had on my fists, could not connect with the guy
I managed to shuffle up the ladder nearby quickly enough to avoid an arrow death and slapped on my trusty sun sword while he did the same, so the day was saved (and I won!) but man
Thought that guy was going to cream me
Dark Souls pvp is rad though you guys, and it's nice to get a reminder now and then

I did that until I got bored months ago, and now I'll invade and put down signs all over the place rather than deal with the iron keep meta, buuuuuut it was kind of silly of me to just assume that most dragon cov players don't want to grind the wins out quickly.
I definitely disagree with your comments on warmth field camping, though; longer weapons and more poke-oriented builds can get a lot out of using it. my latest character that I'm going to be playing the DLC with tomorrow simply powerstances two spears with 40 dex and 2500 health, and if I want to reset a hit I didn't want to take I can lay warmth down and hit people for 400-600 (more if I pick up counter damage) as they come in trying to press an advantage. all I have to do to keep people out of the warmth radius is shove L1's at them and if they're spending all their stamina rolling away or backstab fishing they're not hitting me and I'm still healing.
which can be achieved by breaking line of sight for like, a second
but if someone has to choose between a soft rule and victory, you can hardly blame them for choosing a shot at the win!
i'm just saying they're kind of shitting on the rug that is enjoyable vidjagame fantasy fighting
and then spamming the no way gesture
most people that compulsively chug estus are going to be bad enough that you can immediately pressure them down to the same level and then literally just sprint at their face until they either swing at you, you land a combo on them if they just stop doing things and panic, or you backstab them immediately upon the animation startup and they get one chug off max. it's been a very long time since I lost to someone who is obviously just using multiple health bars as a crutch because very few people who do that can get away with it multiple times - eventually they'll just have low enough health that you'll finish them halfway through the drink animation, and if that doesn't or can't happen you might want to look into a higher damage build.
it helps that i haven't run into one for a while
the wound has not reopened lately
but i am also finding i can successfully roll a lot more of it
i've actually gotten a few mages to give up and switch to melee
the only exception is homing soul mass
that fucking spell
i ended up farming and leveling up a magic magic shield yesterday on my strength character
have not tried it out yet due to aforementioned strange dearth of mages
it sucks
I don't find it boring
i like long fights!
Am I wrong?
Are you gonna say I'm wrong?
That I shouldn't like it? That I should be irritated and annoyed like you? Cos I'm not!
I respect that you don't want long fights. I respect that! I can even understand! That's why I support the removal in other forms of pvp!
Why can't you guys do the same?
Cos I'll tell you what I do find tedious, boring and irritating.
The same damn argument happening on repeat every ten pages.
Nothing new has been said on this topic in weeks. Shit, probably months!
Look, I'm sorry for ranting. I just had to get that off my chest.
Got invaded just now while running to try to get some coop souls at the iron keep final boss
Had on my fists, could not connect with the guy
I managed to shuffle up the ladder nearby quickly enough to avoid an arrow death and slapped on my trusty sun sword while he did the same, so the day was saved (and I won!) but man
Thought that guy was going to cream me
Dark Souls pvp is rad though you guys, and it's nice to get a reminder now and then
Did the remove the invincibility wall from the iron king encounter
The laser is going right through it
Unless it always did and I'm misremembering
