Edit- It also helps that I used that same armor ( Knight set with Elite knight helm) in Dark souls 1 . Also missed that it had already been linked my bad.
As for the one hit and dead issues: Obviously, the first thing you want to do is pump up some Vigor. Everyone needs it, especially casters.
Also do yourself a favor and buy a Mace from the Blacksmith. Those turtle guys are complete chumps against Strike damage. As is the Pursuer. As are later bosses.
Immediately after vigour, consider pumping your adaptability stat. Increasing your adaptability stat has the side effect of increasing your agility stat, which has the ultimate side effect of increasing your invincibility frames when you roll. Attunement also affects agility, just not quite to the same degree as adaptability does.
But yeah. If you can start rolling around to avoid hits, it'll make your life easier. A rule of thumb is to roll to the side when an enemy does a vertical attack, and to roll forwards/backwards for a horizontal sweep. Once you get comfortable, you'll be able to use the invincibility frames to roll through attacks to get up close and personal with your sword, and save your spells for later.
there's even a dragon rider, a man who has presumably based his career on the general availability of dragons to ride
There are drakes and other lesser dragons, but by the time of Dark Souls only two and a half true dragons remain (the ancient dragon, Seath, and Priscilla).
Of those, only the ancient dragon possesses the total immortality of the everlasting dragons, and by the end of Dark Souls Seath is dead and possibly Priscilla (the designers are monsters for putting the best dagger in her tail).
Looks like we'll be making our own bonfires out of the corpses of our enemies. Those things were always a mystery, it's nice to get some insight into their creation.

Is there a stat that dictates how much you can block before you get guard broken? I finally ranked up enough STR to use a shield but I'm not finding out that useful since stuff like the pursuer eats right through my stamina bar.
I did beat pursuer the magic way but it required flawless dodging and 16 greater soul arrows

I got to the sentinel trio but the stupid follower fell off the ledge forcing all three into the fight. That wasn't good.
That is the first truly dickish mandatory fight; just about every other fight leading up to it isn't that bad but you are probably going to be repeating that fight a few times.
So I'm working my way through DS1 because I've heard so many people being super elitist about it as compared to DS2 and the big difference so far seems to be that the bosses in 1 are chumps but the run to them is dickish in the extreme; those two archers in anor londo are the fucking worst.
I just got my hands on the Chaos Rapier, which was my favored rapier on my last dex run. I knew it had a parry on its R2, but I had never tried it before in depth. I just tried using it side by side with the regular rapier and its parry feels slower, but I'm not sure if it is in my head or not
I really want to make use of that R2 parry ...I might have to abandon my chaos rapier and just stick with the vanilla until I get Espada Roprera
The last time I used the Chaos Rapier, I liked infusing it with Poison and then buffing it with flame weapon. The raw damage was outclassed by other things, but I felt the flame damage on the weapon was enough still threaten people even while poison infused. Also nobody really expected to be poisoned by the Chaos Rapier, so many players didn't have their moss pre-selected. Then I just tried to keep the pressure up so that they couldn't easily cycle to and use their moss. I wanted to try that again with the DLC poison gloves.

That fight looks harder than it is, mostly because its easy to be intimidated by enemies with a long reach, wide attacks, and, well, three of the fuckers. They have pretty poor tracking on most attacks (overhead smashes are risky and track well, the rest don't), so if you keep your cool you can weave in between them pretty easily.

It is not mandatory in DS2 or SotFS. In the latter they put a petrified enemy in front to emphasize this.

Just stay up there and snipe them if that happens. Although if you have your mace you should be doing more than decent damage. There is also
a magic mace in Hunstmans Cospe, in a cave with a skeleton right next to the locked bonfire. It's worth a suicide run early in the game if you've got the magic build.
I can't recall how the shortcut works, but yeah the ruin sentinels are skippable. I want to say you have to coming from the Wharf side to do it though.
Yes you do. This time though you don't need a lockstone, and the "way" is pretty well indicated. Of course, there was always the "reward" for the Sentinels.
i was doing sentinels because i got super pissed at wharfs as I got to the last walkway before the boat, completely drained on spells and equipment durability, and was killed right before I reached the spell merchant and lost 17000 souls
but now I'm levelled up and better geared so I can go back to wharfs and just 2 shot everything so I'll probably clear that then work on sentinels
i spent so many levels just getting enough STR to use an entry level sword and shield that my spellpower is a little low so I hope to crank that up when I try sentinels again... because I would rather not rely on spamming effigys to do follower attempts

You can always co-op to get the hang of an encounter. Also there is a shortcut in front of the Magic Merchant. Should have made recovery a breeze.

if you're talking about lowering the bridge (i assume thats what happens) i died before I could do that, so i have to take the long way around again
That's exactly how they work. They cower and run from fire initially, but after a time, they go into a sort of rage animation where they overcome their fear and come to slap your head off. They even scream when they do it, so it's pretty obvious.
totally worth it to get rid of bloodborne vials/bullets though
god what an awful system! especially after they had such a great one with the estus flasks!
Different game different system? I also think the system worked great and enforced what they were going for: aggressive fast paced play, where the easiest way to recover health is by attacking.
I hope fall damage has been scaled back to DS1 levels. A lot of the animations at least are straight out of DS1. Very curious what some of those icons are on the shields.

a lot of fast, mid-size bosses who are very mobile and have quick but wide-radius attacks
I predict a lot of cursing and high blood pressure next year
yesssss
Read the lore description for this item.
It's as explicit as it gets in souls. Zero ambiguity, stated outright.

Increasing your endurance stat also increases your stamina.

Level 148, dark mage build. Can't seem to do much damage to anything.

I'm very concerned about the "Coming 2016" though
Didn't the last trailer say Early 2016?

I decided to skip the DLC. At that point the scaling on the enemies' defenses becomes tiring.

In any case DS is staying true to its roots -
