editing jpeg metadata?

So i recently scanned a lot of old photographs and imported them into iPhoto. They were all dragged into their appropriately named folders "1999 09 Summer", no problem there. However, when i go to my library the entire batch shows up somewhere in 2007 because, naturally, they were turned into jpegs only this month.
It's not a problem now, but if i ever lose my HD and have to import 'em all again to iphoto i'd have to rearrange them all again.
Is there a way for me to edit the "created on" date in a jpeg. (preferably on a mac, but i'm able to fire up the ol' pc if i have to). I googled a bit myself, but combinations of "metadata" and "edit" only gave me programs that could add metadata and edit your images and such.

It looks like it's perfect for the job.
But, apparently i'm so much of a novice that i can't even understand what novice users are supposed to do in OSX.
"Don't forget to set the executable bit after downloading the pre-built executables. Type "chmod +x jhead" at a shell window after downloading it to do this. You don't have to do this if you use one of the RPM packages."
Not a clue what i have to do.
But the pc version is an .EXE, so i'll try that out. Thanks!
