Yeah, all the people shouting "worst roster of any Smash game" are just completely nuts. This is pretty much the same roster as previous Smash games with even more characters and, I'll admit, some minor stinging cuts.
That argument, if used in any serious way, is my cue to go from "I'm sympathetic to your disappointment" to "Yeah, I'm not sure I care what you think any more."

That and the people who blame Sakurai for stringing them along with Ridley as a playable character. The only evidence he's ever shown of Ridley's inclusion in the game was in that segment about boss characters. I don't know how you read that as anything more than, "Ridley is a boss on the Pyrosphere level."
Yeah, my only dissatisfaction with this roster is the lack of Ice Climbers. As someone who isn't remotely interested in the 3DS version, I can't help but feel that the 3DS version is to blame, but I am probably biased or whatever.
I also wish Sakurai would be a little more consistent with the clone characters vs. palette swap manifesto. Dr. Mario is a character but Alph is a costume, apparently! This is probably due to the character's emphasis on the Pikmin in the Japanese version, but it still bothers me.

If the mechanics are different, new character. If they're the same, palette swap.
Dr. Mario got back the tornado. Pittoo has the staff. And Lucina beat Ike bloody until he gave her a spot.

It's been said before, but mechanics-wise Olimar and Alph are interchangeable. Their Pikmin do all the fighting. Even in the Pikmin games, all the captains play identically.

I'm still mildly disappointed that Alph is the only alt costume for Olimar. I wish they had at least done Brittany, and Louie has been in a couple of the games too (more than Alph! :P) I get that Charlie has a weird body type so he may not have fit well molded onto Olimar's dimensions, but I think the other two could have (esp. since they wear helmets so head shape doesn't matter too much)
The only thing I find odd about the Alph and Olimar thing is if he plays identical, why didn't they just go all the way and do all the other pikmin characters? With Louie, Alph, Brittany, and Charlie they would have still had 4 total colors for Olimar.

Different heights and weights.
Louie can control bugs now. Louie and Bulborb woukd be sick

My guess would be they are different body sizes, so would either look weird or have different hitboxes.

I honestly think they could have fudged it. I mean, hell, look at the damn Skyward Sword Link costume. It would have looked better than that :P
I'm absolutely cool with this roster, despite losing my main (Lucas).
That said, the current ongoing rumor is pretty believable, to me at least. Given the awkward spacing of the characters and the fact that, to my knowledge, none of those characters have been seen in trophy form at all yet? Maybe they'll show up in the Wii U version as trophies, who knows. It would be pretty cool though.
But enough pondering, Bowser Jr and Duckhunt look sick as hell
Edit: They found the Dixie Konh trophy, nevermind!

Yeah, I've thought about the Wii U version unlocking the last 4 characters. Plus while the character select screen looks complete enough, there is that weird empty space on the stage selection screen that seems like it should have something.
If something happens with the Wii U version connectivity, that would be awesome, but I'm not going to get my hopes up.
Edit: Although I don't know how reliable someone is claiming to know about the Bowser Jr alts AFTER the ESRB leak, as those were mentioned already in the Ninka leak.
Keep in mind that the newcomers we have now are in line with what we got in brawl (2 clones, 12 newcomers). So if we get any new characters further down the line, it's probably going to be the cut vets first and foremost.

I feel like forcing you to get the Wii U version to unlock additional characters is not something Sakurai would do. It's basically a giant FU to people who don't own a Wii U for no real reason.
I'm guessing the connectivity stuff will not be anything super amazing - maybe just allowing you to transfer already unlocked characters over so you don't have to unlock them twice... maybe trophies too? I dunno. I just am not expecting anything super amazing from that.
Edit: It also roundabout breaks his "both versions will have the same roster" promise since if you can't connect the two, they essentially *don't* have the same roster.

What makes it believable? Any idiot can make up a story with no evidence. And lots of them have already! The characters are spaced such that they taper down to the smallest row as smoothly as possible. It's not impossible that there will be DLC characters of some description, but it's not a sure thing, either.
If someone unlocks every trophy and Ridley and Dixie don't appear at all, then maybe I'll start to get a little suspicious. But until then, there's no reason to get your hopes up over this. (Besides, if Sakurai had any sense he'd include trophies of Meta Ridley and Diddy + Dixie or somesuch and render it indeterminate anyway.)

I still feel like there is no way they would include Ridley AND make him a stage hazard. TBH at this point I would almost dismiss any "leaks" offhand that even suggest Ridley. He isn't happening - people need to get over it already :P
This is no different than when people lost their shit after the Japanese Brawl launch showed the remaining characters to be Wolf, ROB, Toon Link, and so forth.

Fucking Wolf? Another Fox clone?
And Rob? Who the hell cares about Rob these days?!
Okay but now for more serious critique:
Wether I like or dislike the new characters or clones, there are also what I think are legitimate issues - like the fact that after literally over a decade and 3 iterations of this game we still only have one Metroid character. Or that the Zelda series - albeit improved due to the seperration of Zelda and Sheikh - has the exact same characters as the last game. And I realize you can't produce infinite playable characters on a limited budget, but how about, say, cutting Sheikh or Toon link and making way for Girahim? That would freshen things up a bit!
The Mario franchise for example is getting (overly) good treatment here. One new character, that has 8 different costumes that aren't just colour swaps, and a (fan favorite?) return in the form of Dr. Mario.
On the plus side, all the new newcommers, wether I like them or not, all look really well done. Great visuals, innovative and appropriate special moves, neat alternate outfits (villager, Wii fit trainer, Little Mac).
Pic of the day. This is the World Status you can see in Spectator mode. The game isn't released yet so the map looks pretty plain now, but I wonder what it'll look like once it's out? Also, this is where you can see all sorts of stats being tallied up. In Group play and Spectator mode, you can see characters you haven't unlocked yet, so watch out if you don't want to be spoiled.
Even if you don't want to be spoiled, it might be wise to select the Online option at least once before you start the game. Your Global Smash Power won't appear until the first time you connect to the internet. Not only that, but there could potentially be a patch available that can resolve potential issues, like the one being released now for the Japanese version of the game. For the package version, updates can be pre-downloaded to your system even before you purchase the game, so make sure you look out for them.

I hope the divine peanut gallery from Kid Icarus Uprising is this game's version of Snake's codec calls / the special taunts for Fox, Falco and Wolf on Corneria. Someone should test that ASAP.

...aaaaand someone just got a Dixie trophy on one of the streams from japan, so there goes that.
I was at a videogames club today, and one guy there was fuming. Actually yelling loudly about how there was 5 characters in the game that should just NOT BE THERE, and that the game would be better if they simply didn't exist - a list that included Mii Fighters, Duck Hunt Dog and of course Lucina, Dr Mario and Dark Pit. He didn't even think they had "taken a slot", he just wanted them out.
Amusingly he was totally cool with Falco returning though.

Me neither, I'm totally fine that they're gone. Get rid of one classic NES character to make way for another (better) one.
So much drama going on over it and the lack of Ridley, ugh.
Maybe I'm just feeling alright about the whole thing because I chose to believe the right rumors/leaks all along, which is always a good feeling. :P

Yeah, I don't know why I go there either.
