We'll find out more about the game servers around 3-4pm Pacific, when the game starts unlocking for Europe. But right now, more and more people keep jumping on the servers and they're running fine with the Aussies and those +9 hours from australia time, and anyone anywhere who has a physical copy in hand.
"Hi, I just got a message saying I pre-ordered Destiny from you guys?"
<phone number etc etc etc>
"Yep, you're paid in full, arrive at midnight..."
"Really?"
"Yep"
"You're sure?"
"Yes,"
So, I now have one of the most highly anticipated games of the year waiting for me at Midnight tonight and I know literally next-to-nothing about it. I'm prepared to be totally blown away or wildly overwhelmed. I think I forgot about it mostly because every.single.time I get a game that's multiplayer focus I end up playing it by myself and being bored to tears.
So I guess my major question is: Split-Screen online Co-Op on one Gamertag? Yay/Nay?
It seems crazytown to me to take a day off for an online-only game
I can't imagine the first day will go off without any hitches, when you take into account just how many people will be buying and playing this game tomorrow
With each WoW expansion (while I was playing) a good 3/4 of my raid group would take a week off for each expansion to power level together to the cap. There are already people camping out to buy the new iPhone that isn't even announced yet.

Peak concurrency during the beta was 853,235. I think they'll be okay today as they scale up across the time zones.
Plus, I have it on good authority that this is their server farm:
We know the game servers can handle 4.6 million users, because they did that in the beta.
well that was over the course of the entire beta. think simultaneous users peaked at 800K odd if i remember correctly, possibly pushing 900K, so still impressive.

To be fair though, there is a sizable difference in Day one launch of a Game, versus the Expansion launch of a game. The former typically having the most issues.
For example I didn't even consider taking time off for the launch of FFXIV:ARR because I knew it would be a clusterfuck. However taking 2 weeks off for the launch of a content update? No worries there at all. (Don't judge me they are adding Ninja!)

Yeah there is always that large portion of the population that does not pre order or play the betas. It took down D3 launch. It took down Simcity launch. The list goes on. Although this game is a bit different... i guess we shall see how it goes right.
Just started up my 360 copy of Destiny and it's got a 141mb download from Xbox Live, which is taking forever, if it's going at all. Anyone know anything about this?
titanfall was playable from launch, and that was a recent big market online only game.
Agreed. And if there is a team that can handle big launches I would think it would be Bungie. But you would think the same about Blizzard too. It all comes down to the size of the population that had little to no contact with the game but will be buying it. These are not included in the metrics for infrastructure planning and still causes Blizzard hell to this day.
So I stood in line for an hour and a half, got a couple of shirts, some buttons, some stickers. No codes, though. Line was moving super slow and I had to get back to work so I'm not sure if they maybe were handing those out by the door. Bummer if I ended up missing that.

Beta was pretty smooth, and Bungie has handled Halo releases without issue before. The modern game launch is not the server slaughter it once was. Not to mention both Microsoft and Sony have millions of reasons to give them whatever help they need.
Er...after the launch window the Beta was smooth but during the initial start up there were huge problems. Now those seemed to be more on PSN's side but Bungie's side also had some issues.
I would not be surprised if tonight/tomorrow was a bit rocky. I wouldn't expect it to stay that way though.
Not so much Midnight EST but Midnight PST when all the digital hits maybe. Then probably Tuesday evening when the crush of workers gets home and wants to get online.

that's still awesome, grats for you!
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.

Oh yeah, it was still awesome. Lots of excitement! They also were flying a plane pretty low and had what looked like a target laid out (plus plenty of emergency services). I -THINK- they were planning to have some people make a jump which would have been pretty awesome. But the weather today is pretty bad so I think they cancelled.
From what I recall, the day of the Beta stress test Xbox Live went down for several hours, and the day Titanfall released XBL was down for several hours as well in the afternoon. I remember it because it started literally right before I got home from work and came back online 30 minutes after I went to bed
Hopefully that doesn't happen for this launch, but both of those events were pretty recent...
I used to have a cockatiel who would literally knock himself out in his cage if he couldn't stand directly in the center of whatever I was eating.

Well that was a close call. I woke up at 4:30 this morning and just happened to flip in the iPad and saw my Amazon order was delayed. Apparently I preordered in July with my credit card that since expired. So I quickly updated my card info and <gasp> my delivery date changed from 9/9 to 9/12 with Amazon prime 2-day free delivery. So then I had to spend my morning ritual on the crapper chatting with a rep. Turns out if you ever change your payment information, your order doesn't necessarily change, but it does fall in queue and since orders placed since some days ago no longer qualify for release date delivery, I lost that perk.
Naturally, Amazon CS is pretty good and the rep bumped me up to next day delivery at no charge to ensure I got the game tomorrow.
But then things got weird. My order status changed from "preparing to ship" BACK to "pre-ordered" around noon today and the estimated delivery changed again from 9/9 to 9/10. I immediately thought WTF?! So I contacted Amazon CS again only this time the person I got was all like "yeah, your payment info changed, but it's too late and we can't guarantee delivery on 9/9. Enjoy your game on the 10th. Buh-bye."
So then I was all /sadface, but when I came home from work I got a text on my phone with a UPS tracking number and an ETA of 9/9.
tl;dr Keep calm and make sure you get your payment info correct the first time.
@LCDXX, the exact same thing occurred to me with my preorder of the Xbox One on launch day, since I had ordered it prior to my card being given a new number by the bank. I was pretty sure I wouldn't get it on launch day but the email was sent at like 2 in the morning the day of release that it was shipped, and sure enough I got it that afternoon.
God bless Amazon and whatever voodoo they use to teleport things everywhere.

yeah i think a lot of people got stung by this in the lead up to the Xbone and Ps4 launches. can really screw you if you don't know about it or notice it, but as LCDXX it can be fixed even if its something that shouldn't be a problem in the first place.
so yeah, always double check your payment details when pre-ordering and re-check any pre-orders when you get a new credit/debit card.
Just got to put the first "Y" in the "In Clan?" column on the PS4 sheet (Congrats, Achire!). I'll update it periodically every few hours from now until we get near 100 members, and then I'll handle [PA2]. Thanks for your patience as you get in-game and set your clan on Bungie.net.

I don't know how to embed tweets. Cool cosplay with Crucible banner. (although crappy video)
Edit 2: Apparently it worked after the first edit?
Hate all you want, but it's just as un-played as yours at the moment

I think we'll share an alarm for once.
They tried to bury us. They didn't know that we were seeds. 2018 Midterms. Get your shit together.

Hehe.
Joking aside, I have two lineolated parakeets.
A lutino female, and a cobalt male.
That guy was at PAX; they brought him and the other cosplayers up to the front for the Destiny panel.
omg adorbs

You might need to turn Peter Dinklage off then on again to fix it. Make sure he's plugged in, too.
