Yup its official, all you bastards that fast forwarded to the end were wrong. X button deploys either the trip mine or the bubble shield, depending on what you have. Think of the trip mine as a suicide bomb and you've already seen the bubble shield.
The replay is the record of the match that you can watch at the end of the game; You can change the views, slo-mo, etc. But the X button is equipment deployment.
On the official announcement post over at Bungie, Frankie commented in the discussion thread that the trailer featured not two but three deployed devices via the X button. All signs point to a portable gravity lift (if you watch the Quicktime, it's at 00:22 - on Xbox Live it's at 00:27). You don't actually see it get tossed down, but there is a blue guy using it to reach a turret platform at the very beginning of the vidoc - later in the same video, the platform is there but there's not grav-lift in front of it.
I can not watch videos currently on my work machine (unless they be flashified)- so someone want to watch it and actually explain what the X button does. I predict Board Grab tricks.
I'm not sure how much had been revealed previously but so far, the bubble shield from the video has made an appearance, and there is now a trip mine, which is basically "If i'm going down I'm taking you with me"
The x button is "deploy equipment". There are three different kinds of equipment that we know about as of this video. Gravity pads, shield bubbles, and trip mines.
Some guys on Neogaf have spotted a new game type, Escort, as well as a map named Warthog, Inc. (probably a codename).

Wow, they really seem to be fully targetting the uber halo fan audience - the people that the only fps they play is halo, I guess that's good for the fans.

Why does it seem like that?
I'm thoroughly excited and I play other FPSs like Rainbow Six, Counter-Strike and UT.

Thanks for clearing that up.
Traps/devices could make Halo a lot more exciting I guess.
I despise Halo 2.
I hope Halo 3 is great.

just the general ethos of the developers, how they talk about it, play it lots, talk about levels having to be fun the thousandth time round, stuff like that.

Dude, that just sounds like fucking awesome game design. Imagine if everyone developing new "Spong-Bob Squarepants" games thought like that.

I didn't say it was a bad thing. In fact, I said it's good for the fans.

I don't get your comment either. I think those design concepts should be applied to every game. I didn't see anything specific to Halo in there, especially not something that targets the uber-fans.

Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary
opinion is wishful thinking at its worst.

That bubble shield is going to be awesome. I liked the replay feature, too.
Come on May 16th!
For some reason I was reminded of SW: Ep 1 when Qui Gon and Darth Maul were fighting and that force field popped up between them. They had a moment to just look at each other, rest, recoup, and then BAM, it's on again.

Maybe it's just because I don't like halo, and don't see how half the stuff they are talking about so passionatly would be remotely intresting the the most uber of fans. Like the replay, from what I can tell it's like the kil-cam that has been around since COD1.

No, this is different, this is more like replays you see in racing games -- it doesn't show you where you got killed from while you're waiting to respawn.
This is fixing those "You're playing Halo with a bunch of friends at a LAN party. Suddenly, a cry goes up from one player, and simultaneously, some other player starts laughing, and yelling "owned! owned!" and you know something awesome went down, but you totally missed it" --- now, afterwards, in the post game, you can watch a whole replay of the entire match.
I'm fairly certain the Trip Mine isn't just a suicide bomb; that's just the way it was shown in the video. In all likelihood, you can just drop it anywhere to bring unexpected explodey goodness to your friends when they least expect it.

Wouldn't have chance to watch a reply - I would be too busy puching the guy who said "owned" outloud in the face.
I hope the single player is getting as much time as this. I care not for multiplayer FPSs and the abrupt ending of Halo 2 implys to me they split there resources badly.

I feel the same way. Halo was a fairly good console-FPS with a half-decent story. Halo 2 was a reasonable sequel with an unfinished story.
Hopefully the devs have put the effort into developing a quality single-player experience this time.

To me, that's exactly what Halo has always been missing. While playing Halo (the campaign), I've never thought "Wow, this is fucking incredible".

Silent Cartographer beach landing begs to disagree with you. But it was so goddamned short.

I'd also argue the entirety of The Maw. Simply one of the greatest levels of all time, IMO.
Oh, and certain sections of Assault on the Control Room, like the giant pyramid, the ice lake, and the entire scorpion section.

I apologize if the clever escaped your grasp, it can be tricky.
Can't watch videos at the moment.
I'm actually downloading it myself, I'll let you know when it's finished unless someone beats me to it. I've got 5 mins to go.
well, its more that I like to know what a thread is before I click on it, the current name is much better.
*confused*
Well, the original title was pretty spammy.
I actually clicked on the thread link just to see why anybody would risk a Jailing in order to reply to a spam thread.

Trip mines are always fun. Always.
Still, it's not really all that different from the demo recording that most PC FPSes support.
There are even online "TV stations" entirely devoted to streaming Counter-strike matches.
it's a good feature, so what?
you guys are being silly

It was a very fun coop game.
not many of those on the sequel
