I was trying to think back to such a moment in Dry Bone Dunes but can't having raced so many races.
Although I was racing rather frantically so if the opponent wasn't moving for a time it might have been the CPU? Think there was a PGP in a kart and I know Didge prefers using a bike too. (I like how those initials are close to RPG as well, like PGP is the karting equivalent of a RPG in a shooter)
According to July NPD, Mario Kart 8 was the 5th best selling game of the month, with over a million in the US alone. Only the second game on Wii U after NSMBU to sell over a million.
Edit: had wrong numbers, was confusing MK7 with 8 worldwide sold.

MILLION-MILE MARKERS: MARIO KART 8 CROSSES 1 MILLION, NINTENDO 3DS SOFTWARE HITS 40 MILLION
Mario Kart 8 has now sold more than 1 million total units in the United States alone, becoming the second Wii U game to cross that milestone, along with New Super Mario Bros. U (1.69 million). Mario Kart 8 continues to drive momentum for the Wii U platform. Through the first seven months of 2014, total sales of Wii U hardware and software have increased by nearly 60 percent and more than 135 percent, respectively, over the same period in 2013.
Moral of the story - Nintendo needs to release Mario Kart as a launch title for every future console :P
I have seen the light and inside drifting is the truth.

I decided to try my hand at Super Mario Kart since it hit the Wii U eshop recently. This is a game that I mastered when I was like, 8. Now at the ripe old age of 29, I am absolutely awful at it. Just flying all over the road, can't stay on the track to save my life. How on Earth did I ever get good at this?
To cleanse my palette, I hopped over to the Wii menu and booted up Mario Kart 64. Another game I had mastered in my formative years, and one that was surely more refined than the original. To my chagrin, I am completely terrible at it now too! The karts feel like they really slip and slide all over the place, so very difficult to keep on the track.
At this point I had to make sure I haven't had a stroke or something, so I jumped in to Mario Kart 8. Wow, what a difference 8 generations makes! I hadn't realized just how friendly the handling of Mario Kart 8's vehicles are, and how very easy it is to get in to. Well, at least I am still good at one Mario Kart.
There are some really interesting splits in the poll so far, especially with the class and items. I'm sort of glad that one thing in particular isn't getting any votes! No problem on the reminder too. I wasn't sure if I was going crazy and it had already been posted or not.
I've no idea how I would do going back to Super Mario Kart as well but I think that I would still be pretty decent-good at Mario Kart 64? I played that game a hell of a lot in college and I'm not much older than you. But yeah, the general handling has improved a metric fuckton.
Does Wii Mode put Mario Kart 64 in wide screen? Playing the game on original hardware with my TV set to widescreen makes the controls feel super wonky when its really just the screen being stretched.
Also I still really enjoy Super Mario Mart. But I'm a big fan of non-sim racers and enjoy variety from racer to racer.

@McFlynn when I played Mario Kart 64 on Wii Mode it was in 4:3 with black bars on the sides. Did the Wii originally stretch it out? I guess I didn't even think about it.
It actually looked pretty good too, for being in standard def.
Well if even it wasn't stretched, then yeah, the controls are still weird compared to MK8. Its kind of like you're sliding your rear end out while turning and the rest of the cart eventually catches up.
If I remember right, the Wii either does everything widescreen or not at all. So stuff with a wide mode looked fine but it'd mess up VC stuff. Its been a long time since I've done any VC stuff on the Wii though. I did notice that the Wii mode is in widescreen by default on Wii U. Since its an actual HD device I bet the WiiU handles those issues a lot better.
I could actually check this stuff but I'm lazy.

I'm really surprised where the poll is sitting at right now. No Items and Bananas Only are pretty close to winning!

Bananas only would be hilarious. I didn't vote for it, but now I'm rooting for that one to win.

What do you do if there's a tie?
Flip a coin I guess? Hopefully that won't come up.
Will be closing the poll fairly soon.

PA G&T SundayDrivers Tournament -- Week 11
START YOUR ENGINES! Week 11 races begin SUNDAY August 17th from 6 PM to 8 PM CST (7 PM to 9 PM Eastern, 4 PM to 6 PM Pacific). Come get your race on against fellow Penny-Arcaders!
Based on this week's poll results, here are the race settings:
To join the tournament, simply use Search by Code on the Mario Kart 8 tournament menu, and enter the code 6987-9166-8350. You will only need to do this once -- the tournament will be saved in your favorites after you first join it. Once you have joined, you will also have access to this tournament's own Miiverse community.
Points are accumulated based on race performances during tournament hours. Everyone is capped at a maximum of 16 races each Sunday, so you won't be able to cheese your way to the top of the standings by simply doing more races than everyone else. After each tournament, I will post the standings here. This tournament will stay open until everyone gets sick of it and stops playing.
If you join the tournament outside of the designated race hours, you will be able to race against anyone else who is in the tournament lobby at the time, but your points will not count towards the official tournament standings.
There is no friend list requirement for the tournament. You can race against anybody who joins the tournament, whether they are on your friends list or not!
The tournament lasts for 2 hours, and everyone is capped at 16 races. Opponent shuffling is off. We are using Bananas Only item settings this week. CPU opponents have been activated at Hard difficulty. This will help fill out the races when the room isn't full, and allow you the same point potential in every race.
As always this tournament is open to future changes -- There is a weekly poll for everyone to vote on basic race settings. If you would like to see changes that are not available via the poll, please post your suggestions in this thread.
See you on the track!!

All bananas! This should be interesting, looking forward to it. I hope I can make it on today, family obligations. If not, good luck to everyone. If I CAN make it, horrible luck to everyone so I can win. :P

I only voted All Items because I was afraid splitting the vote would put Frantic ahead.
But I'm glad Bananas won. I might consider the top speed build instead of the usual indrift.
I'm not sure what build to run tonight. Bananas are weak as an offensive weapon, so you don't have much to fear from those behind you. That suggests a top speed build would be the best. However, I expect the track to be absolutely littered with bananas and dropped in rather devious places. That suggests a build with good handling for last minute banana dodges would be key to victory.
It's going to be an interesting night on the kart track.
I think the 1%ers will maintain their usual comfortable lead as the people in the back flounder in the walls of banana peels that will form as people decide to improve the strength of the banana traps.
1st place drops a banana.
2nd place dodges the banana and drops their own next to it.
3rd place barely dodges the two of them and drops their own next to them.
4th place just barely skirts the wall and drops their own next to it.
and so on, until someone finally slams into it.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
Trying to do this time calculation here to see if I'll be off in time to play with you guys and its all sorts of screwing with my dyslexia. I get off at 830 am Japan time, which is 930 pm us central time if my calculations are correct. So looks like I will miss it.

Anyone play against fire hoppers online? I noticed that some people online with VR ratings ranging from 6000 to 8000 have been placing at the top consistently and they are running with setups you don't expect like heavy and pipeframes. Notice they are hopping a lot and if left untouched by items always win big. Been seeing them more often than heavies + inside drift bikes lately.
It's not like they're untouchable, items still screw everyone over.
