I knew it was a bad night when you didn't come back for more races.
Part of that decision was me being addicted to Hyrule Warriors and wanting to play that for a while. But yeah, I may have been driven to jump on a turtle in real life if I had played any more Mario Kart last night.
I figured it would be that kind of night after that first race you referenced earlier. Blue shell on the final lap chained into red shells, green shells, bombs, and I think someone in the crowd threw a hotdog at me. It wasn't as bad that gif that makes its rounds of someone going from 1st to 12th at the very end of a race, but it was the worst I've experienced.
I am looking forward to seeing the replays. It felt like there was some really good item use from everyone. Also, there were a lot of wayward turns happening that I hope are caught on film (from me especially).

First up is something I like to think of as @skeldare 's bad day. It's hard to see how many people got caught in Luigi's death from above bomb drop. I'm sure it was a lot. Stupid Luigi.
Next is TJ/@SilentRoughWater super horning their way into second place. Also, along with me, being confounded by fences. That bridge entrance needs to be a little wider.
In Thwomp Ruins @Rehab is on fire. Literally. Which he uses to burn away my victory. Or maybe it's because I possibly shot him out of the air with a banana which wasn't caught in the replay. And look who is in second place. Stupid Luigi.
At Toad Harbor I test out the waters. (twice) But that doesn't keep me from harassing everyone with any item I can get my hands on. Rehab is particularly victimized with shells and bananas alike.
@CGH may have been having a bad day but these laps round the Excitebike track don't show it. Rehab, possibly concerned about his potassium levels, eats another final turn banana. And look, Stupid Luigi.

finally got the game just now, yay eShop sale!
So uh even though I've owned every Nintendo console the only other Mario Kart game I've owned is the SNES version, and I think it's by far the best version. (but I've only ever dabbled occasionally with the other versions so.. what do I know).
DLC is currently downloading (oh god so slow) but I'm excited to try this out as I hear amazing things. Hope I like it as man do I love the SNES original Mario Kart...
I've never found myself enjoying Time Trials in any previous iteration, but here? Its pretty great!

holy fuck this game is hard. i need like.. some tips or something. I never played any fo the ones where you have to like drift and make blue sparks or wahtever, I finally figured out double tapping drift gets you into that mode but I still feel like my turns are huge and sloppy. I got 3rd on the original cup at 100ccc but was only able to get to 4th on the next cup at 150cc... might need to drop it back down
Today I learned I am back at modern mario kart with all of its bullshit powerups hitting me at the end of the race.
Pressing the shoulder button just once gets you into drifting and the sparks change color as time lapses. Also, Karts tend to drift outward and bikes tend to drift inward, but they do so very sharply. Finding your ideal setup takes a lot of time with different vehicles, parts, weight classes, etc.
Playing through them all is enjoyable and will net you lots of stamps. Its also likely that you will know when you land on a character that feels good shortly after trying him/her/it out. And in case you don't know, you can hold items behind you (you just can't hold two anymore).
I've had the game for a few months now, and picked up both DLC packs the same day I bought the game. I have access to the DLC 1 content, drivers and courses, etc. I can't seem to change colors for Yoshi and Shy Guy thought. From looking online, I gather all I have to do is select either and a menu should pop up letting me pick their color... but it doesn't.

I think you only got the Shy Guy and Yoshi skins when you bought the DLC double pack before November, i.e. when the first DLC was release. I'm not sure though.

I believe you still get the colors if you buy both DLC packs. That means you need to plunk money down for DLC Pack #2.
Thanks guys, I had purchased both packs but obviously the 2nd hasn't been released. I double checked in the eshop and noticed an option to redownload, did so and I've got the option to change colors now.
I was going crazy trying to figure out some button combo needed to swap colors.

START YOUR ENGINES! Week 35 races begin SUNDAY February 1st from 6 PM to 730 PM CST (7 PM to 830 PM Eastern, 4 PM to 530 PM Pacific, 12 AM to 130 AM GMT). Come get your race on against fellow Penny-Arcaders!
Based on this week's poll results, The settings poll has been retired. I may open it back up if there is demand for it. Going forward, here are the race settings:
WARNING: If you do not have DLC Pack 1 installed, NO KART FOR YOU.
To join the tournament, simply use Search by Code on the Mario Kart 8 tournament menu, and enter the code 6987-9166-8350. You will only need to do this once -- the tournament will be saved in your favorites after you first join it. Once you have joined, you will also have access to this tournament's own Miiverse community.
Points are accumulated based on race performances during tournament hours. Everyone is capped at a maximum of 16 races each Sunday, so you won't be able to cheese your way to the top of the standings by simply doing more races than everyone else. After each tournament, I will post the standings here. This tournament will stay open until everyone gets sick of it and stops playing.
If you join the tournament outside of the designated race hours, you will be able to race against anyone else who is in the tournament lobby at the time, but your points will not count towards the official tournament standings.
There is no friend list requirement for the tournament. You can race against anybody who joins the tournament, whether they are on your friends list or not!
The tournament lasts for 2 hours, and everyone is capped at 16 races. Opponent shuffling is off. CPU opponents have been activated, they will help fill out the races when the room isn't full, and allow you the same point potential in every race.
As always this tournament is open to future changes -- There is a weekly poll for everyone to vote on basic race settings. If you would like to see changes that are not available via the poll, please post your suggestions in this thread.

Sometimes the game bugs and doesn't let you stop it manually. Which I also had tonight.
It completely fucks you when you're waiting 10 seconds longer than everyone else because you get hit by everything you would have normally been able to defend yourself from.

I think it is sometimes determined by the gap between you and the person in front of you?
Like if you are way behind in a certain position I think you typically get a better item.
