So looking at Pokken and Hyrule Warriors, is this Nintendo's new approach to attracting third parties? People don't normally buy third party titles on Nintendo consoles, so they'll dress them up with first-party appearances (and first party quality-control)?
It's not that new. They did the same thing during the GameCube era.

A while back they said that this is indeed their goal, yes - taking advantage of their huge stable of IPs and characters while at the same time not using up too many of their own resources.

Really? What games came out of that?
The biggest ones I can think of offhand are F-Zero GX and Starfox Assault.

Oh, didn't know those had third party developers. What's unique about this current trend though isn't that they're using third party developers, but that those developers are making games that fit into their own franchises gameplay-wise.
And I just realized that I'd forgotten about SMTxFE until now. Is that going to be like an SMT game or a Fire Emblem game? (sorry for going so off topic, BTW)

They also did it with Pokémon Conquest...and it was awesome.
I'm gonna list all of the full evolved fighting types, for the sake of roster speculation
Machamp
Lucario
Primeape
Hitmonlee
Hitmonchan
Hitmontop
Hariyama
Conkeldurr
Throh
Sawk
Mienshao
Pangoro
Medicham
Hawlucha
Poliwrath
Mega Mewtwo X
Heracross
Blaziken
Breloom
Infernape
Toxicroak
Gallade
Emboar
Scrafty
Chesnaught
Meloetta (second form)
The Swords of Justice
That list is a somewhat reasonable roster on its own. It's probably safe to cut out those last two though, and maybe a few of the less suitable and liked Pokemon (Breloom is a fighting type? What? And Hawlucha is friggin tiny)
If they decide to use only Fighting type pokemon in their final evolutions, I see 30 pokemon usable in this game. But who knows what it's gonna be like.

Hopefully they opt for some of the other forms too like Tyrogue and Riolu.

Add Pikachu and Greninja.

I'm completely nonplussed by this Pokken trailer. A Pokemon fighting game and the best you can come up with is two bipedal fighting types punching each other? Yawn. Why even bother if you're going to go that conservative with it? Call me when you've figured out how to support Arbok vs. Galvantula or something.
The Pokemon IP would have been a much better match for a loose, fluid fighter on the level of Super Smash Bros. or Jump Ultimate Stars rather than something rigid and traditional like Tekken.

I agree - even something a bit more free roaming like Power Stone would have been pretty amazing.
I think if they were going to make a copy of a fighting game for Pokemon, Street Fighter would've been a better match. You could potentially have less humanoid characters, as well as projectiles actually being a thing. Tekken will work I suppose, but I would've liked to see how their version of Pokemon Street Fighter would have worked.
Fighting-type Pokémon in a fighting game. It makes so much sense that I can't believe it's 2014 and we're only now getting one. The styles of fighting alone are what intrigue me the most.

Well, take this with a grain of salt, but they say that that specific issue (no non-bipeds) is something they're trying not to run into.

No High/low guard? I hope this replacement mechanic is good, because that's kind of a fundamental pillar of the genre.
I'd be shocked if they released a pokemon game where pikachu doesn't make an appearance.
They could put in that luchador Pikachu from the R/S remakes if they're just using Fighting types.
Sticking to Fighting types only sounds a little odd to me, if true, but there are lots of great fighting types around so I guess it's fine if unimaginative.
Rosterwise Im expecting something like this:
Lucario
Machamp
Hariyama
Hitmonchan,lee and top
Gengar
Scizor
Alakazam
Dragonite
Medicham
Gyrados
Ampharos
Lucha pikachu
Most of the starters
Snorlax
Genesect
The gen 5 trio
Mewtwo
Arceus

Hudson developed Mario Party games if I'm not wrong.
Namco got involved with the new Smash game, right?

How will that work though? He's so small. Will he just be one of those super irritating characters that can only be hit by low attacks?
