I mean doesn't need to be anything special. Probably avoid Aggron since you'll already want to mega evolve the sharpedo. After that just fill with mons as needed. Maybe do a baton pass if you're playing singles or a helping hand doubles comp.
Using hacked mons competitively is barely even cheating. They need to have permitted traits, or they're super disqualified. It can be disruptive to even try entering a Dark Void-shuckle or whatever, though.
I know I want to use dragonite and tyranitar. But I wasn't sure if they compliment.
Tyranitar might be harder to make useful, but Dragonite with the hidden ability is great. IMO Tyranitar needs set up and you're already doing that for Sharpedo.
For now I'm just doing normal battles against coworkers. All of theirs against all of mine. It's all very basic.
But lets say doubles, so I can learn to go beyond the basics of my hydro pump really hurt your fire based charizard. Which accurately describes my skill level.
Argg! Almost got a Hoopa but missed out. There was one on up for trade GTS for a lvl 71-80 Gothitelle. I quickly leveled a level 48 Gothita I had and when I went back to GTS the Hoopa was gone. Diancie and Hoopa are the only Pokemon missing from my living dex

Oh! Glad I checked back on the thread. If you still have that spare Hoopa to trade I would gladly take it. Anything you would like in exchange? Maybe an item?
I'm playing through White 2 again at the moment, this time using Challenge Mode. I gotta say, it's a nice change of pace to be continuously underleveled in a Pokemon game. Especially since I've had my full team together quite early on (Samurott, Leavanny, Lucario, Arcanine, Jolteon, Braviary) so there's less xp to go around for everyone.

Also, challenge mode should have been a thing in all subsequent games, just unlocked from the start and not needing to finish a different cart to do it.

That sounds entirely too reasonable.
During Gen V I encountered some issues with being abroad and receiving Pokemon distributions. I am not sure they have been rectified in Gen VI, but with the ability to choose languages I would not say it is out of the question.
I'm starting to think that I just plain suck at this game. I can't build a team that I want it to do and I never have any luck with real wins on battle spot. I'm 1400 now and I feel like if I play any more, I'll end up with a 1200 rating or less. I'm just a little fed up.

I think psychic is pretty bad for my team. I'm thinking about switching one or two pokemon out, but I don't know about what's better or worse. It's kinda like building a deck in a card game for me; I know what's bad, but I don't know a good alternative to make things better.

Do you just mean Psychic types in general? Try adding a Sucker Punch user to your team. It can be devastating, though you might want to add a secondary option in case they are using a set-up build.
Assault Vest Conkeldurr is actually a shockingly good against many more support oriented psychic types, it can eat a hit and dish out some heavy damage with Knock Off.
Consider adding a steel type as well. Aegislash, Mega Mawile, Mega Metagross, Heatran...tons of good options.
You could start writing down stats for your team, like... "Brought these 6, used these 4, this one went down without a fight", identify your weaknesses. Then as you change up your team, see what happens.
edit: I've been thinking of becoming more active in the competitive scene, even just one or two battles each night. Would it be fun for us to post teams we are using every week and then discussing our success with them?
Yeah, posting teams every week would be fun and might make me a little better at the game. The team I was using had Mega Venusaur, Milotic, Rotom-H, Terrakion, Hydreigon, and Aegislash (I'm going to try something different this/next week). I didn't really have much luck with it, but maybe that is just me and my playstyle. I think the problem for me is that, I never really learn just why I had trouble with my teams. I can make teams fine, but to follow up on why it doesn't work and to make it better; I have no idea how to do that.
Those are some good suggestions though

Because I don't care much for legendaries, its taken me until now to start tackling the ORAS Mirage Island Legendaries. Yes, I know. Trying to catch Zekrom tonight, I caught 4-5 that were not the nature I wanted (Naughty), and none that WERE Naughty, even when using a Synchronizer. Anyone know if those little Hoopa rings nullify the effect of Synchronizers, or was I just getting unlucky?
You can still use synchronizer pokemon. I was using a calm Ralts to catch Cresselia and I got it. Note that there's only a 50% chance you'll receive the right nature upon capture, so you're probably having bad luck..
EDIT: I'm trying out a team with Cresselia and Mega Camerupt, and oh man, it's doing some work. I got a few wins with it. I never tried out Trick Room, but I think it's something I'll have to play around with. I've always liked bulky slow pokemon.

Pokemon Go developer Niatic announced today that it has raised its Series A financing round from The Pokemon Company Group, Google and Nintendo. As mentioned in today’s announcement, “The companies are investing up to $30 million in Niantic, Inc., which includes an initial $20 million upfront and an additional $10 million conditioned upon achieving certain milestones.” Through the funding, Niatic intends to continue developing Pokemon Go, support the global Ingress community, scale its platform, and release new games.
Niantic CEO John Hank said of today’s news:
“The Pokémon Company, Google and Nintendo are incredible investors and strategic partners to help build the next chapter for Niantic. We will be using this capital to continue the development of Pokémon GO, to evolve and grow Ingress and its thriving global community, and to build out our real-world gaming platform.”
Tsunekazu Ishihara, president and CEO of The Pokémon Company, also stated:
“Pokémon’s strategic investment in Niantic paves the way for a social mobile experience the world has never seen before. The Pokémon Company is committed to partnering with companies like Niantic that share the same spirit of community and innovation.”
Finally, some words from Google’s VP of corporate development, Don Harrison:
“Niantic has shown the great potential of mixing geolocation technology, dynamic storytelling and innovative game design, and we’re excited to continue supporting the team on their journey.”
OH MAN I have been swamped this week and haven't seen it, but SPOOKY CUP! It isn't just ghost types, its an arbitrarily selected list of ~Spooky Pokemon~, including Exploud? Okay.
Edit; NEXT MONTH IS SCRAPPY SKIRMISH, which bans any Pokemon which have finished in the Top 12 of any event this year, which is mostly Kangaskan and Garchomp etc., but because of the Pikachu Cup, also bans some things like Luxray, which is hilarious.
Arghh. I suck at making teams. I have even less experience with doubles.
I sort of want to take part in one of these, but I've never been satisfied with a team. I suppose maybe I should just throw something together and hope that the average player is just as bad as me? I suppose I don't have anything to lose. The only thing at stake is a bunch of rare candies, and I'm pretty sure that's just a participation prize that I can get for losing every match.
For some reason I REALLY want to use Garvantula. The little spider calls to me. I think the usual plan would be sticky-web, but tidbits I'm reading from people experimenting with the format are saying that trick-room is popular so slowing them down might not be the best idea. Won't the be expecting sticky web? Maybe I should just start throwing thunders at things. They might try to taunt me to stop the sticky web I thought I was gonna use?
Yep. That might be what I'll do. Make a bad team whose only strategy is "hit things with the beatstick" and YOLO with no real care in the world.
Trick Room is pretty hit and miss, in that if you can pull it off it gives your team a great advantage but if your opponent knows how to play they can play around it. Plus, Sticky Web is honestly FANTASTIC, speed control is phenomenally useful, and so long as you take note of which Pokemon tend to set up trick room you'll never accidentally screw yourself over. Additionally, Galvantula has access to Volt Switch, which is super helpful for conserving your momentum in battles because you don't have to choose between doing damage and switching, as well as Electro Web, which is kind of like Sticky Web but an attack, and is a valid option instead of it (trade long-term use for immunity to taunt). Throw in some Thunder Wave Support, access to Giga Drain / Energy Ball to help against the Ground types that will try to ruin your Volt Switch / Electro Web / Thunder Wave fun, and you've got a pretty cool utility mon. Galvantula will help pave the way for slower brutal Pokemon in your back to wreck the opponent!
Honestly, half of my teams are just kind of thrown together around the idea that I wanted to use X Pokemon (right now its Gothitelle), and most players are worse than you'd expect so you'll probably have a good time in the tournament.
