We're pleased to present to you the PAX Prime 2014 Tabletop Tournaments schedule!

Tabletop Freeplay is awesome, but sometimes you just crave competition. Join us for some organized play with PAX's Tabletop Tournaments, held on the third and fourth floor of the Motif Seattle Hotel (formerly the Red Lion Hotel on Fifth Ave - above the Elephant & Castle restaurant). Sign-ups open 10:00 AM each day for that day’s events, in the Emerald Ballroom on the 3rd Floor. Please arrive 15 minutes before your event for check-in. For events with First Round Heats: You may join ANY Heat of an event to qualify for later rounds. Many of the tournaments will use expansions - inquire at sign-up for specifics. Please remember, a Badge is required to participate in all PAX events, including our tournaments.

I won't be participating in any tournaments, but I think I'm gonna try and make it to one of the 9 pm Dragon Dice Novice events! Looks fun and not as intimidating as the rest of the freeplay area. :P

Is that something I need to sign up for beforehand?

@rahnawyn, it's probably a good idea to sign up as early in the day as you can (after 10am). Last year we had to turn a few people away. This year, we scheduled more 2-hour events! Hopefully you can find one to fit your schedule. I also changed the format this year to just novice/teaching events to create a more relaxed and enjoyable experience (I hope). I look forward to seeing you there!
Thank You for your enthusiasm and your support!

What's the general atmosphere for these tournaments? This is my first year at PAX, and I'm interested in joining a tournament, but should I be worried if I'm there just to have fun? Am I going to make enemies if I'm not there to be intensely competitive?

  • zerzhulzerzhul Registered User, Moderator mod
Some people will always be intensely competitive, so that's just a thing you'll have to be able to expect, even in friendly tourneys. For official pax tourneys though, there isn't much in the way of prizes, because they're designed to be friendly tourneys, so ideally it will attract a less competition-centric crowd (although, again, anyone can sign up, so it will likely be full of all sorts).

    ^ This.
Unfortunately it is just in some people's personalities and you have to work around it. I just tell people to calm down, remind them it's for fun and/or apologize if they got mad because of a mistake I made.

We do our best to structure the events to skew more towards casual play - Zerzhul's correct - many of the tournaments have a PAX 14 Medal as the prize for the winner. Which is totally awesome, but not some kind of $10,000 cash prize.

A few of the events DO have big prizes though. The winner of the Settlers of Catan Regional Championship wins a trip to Gen Con 2015 with airfare. The Android: Netrunner and Star Wars: X-Wing events will have prizes from Fantasy Flight Games. A few other tournaments may have copies of games as prizes, and/or promos for participating.

But by-and-large, we think of the events as casual experiences. The goal is for people to have FUN, not to crush your opponents. Come play in a tournament for a couple hours, to see how others play some of your favorite games, and then head back to the Expo Hall for another walk-through.

Also, while it's not officially a part of PAX Prime itself, if you are a Krosmaster Arena player, Japanime Games will be holding the National Championships at the next hotel over!

    sykhsuax3796.jpg

Japanime Games has an online signup sheet for this, at http://www.japanimegames.com, with the following information:
Our National Championships will be held in Seattle, WA at the Crowne Palaza Evergreen Room, On August 31st. Sign up here for this FREE tournament with fantastic prizes! Top 4 get a full trip to go to FRANCE for the Worlds! Please understand that Registration opens at 10 AM, and if you are not registered, your seat is not guaranteed.

Since this event is not an official part of PAX, you don't need a PAX badge to attend. But it's happening right next to us, and due to...reasons...it's not an official PAX event, so it won't be in the program booklet or in Guidebook.

So it looks like there is no 50 point warmachine/hordes tournament this year, is that correct?

Thanks for the feedback! I'm definitely going to try to sign up for one. Takenoko looks like it'll fit in with my schedule, and giant Tsuro sounds like it'd be fun to at least watch.

Do these things fill up pretty fast? Should I plan on being there at 10am to sign up, or could I stroll in half an hour before the tournament and expect to play?

In the past 3 years, Tsuro has had room to accommodate players right up until the event started.

This is the first time we're running Takenoko, so I can't predict how quickly it'll fill up. I don't think it'll be nearly as large of a draw as old standbys like Dominion, or new hotness like Star Realms. But each signup sheet will have a Waiting List - if people sign up at 10am, and the list fills, you might still get in if people fail to show up at the start of the event.

Safest, of course, is to sign up at 10am.

So why was Tabletop moved to Motif this year? Things seemed to go much better at the Olive 8 which also had more space.

D&D info will be released very soon. But D&D events will also be located at the Motif Hotel, on the 4th Floor.

The Olive 8 was not available for PAX use this year. But at the Motif, we now are using two floors for Tabletop, instead of just the 3rd Floor like we did in 2012. So it should be comparable to the space we had at the Olive 8 last year.

I am trading my Monday Pass for a Friday pass as I wanted to play in the Warmachine tournament, but the person with the Friday pass won't be able to meet me until 11 Friday, so I was wondering if it will be full by then or not? Or if there is any way I could sign up, as I probably can't get in until I get my pass.

Along with Mer I'm running the Warmachine tournament. PM me and we can try and work something out.

Is the warmachine tournaments appropriate for beginners (ppl who have lists, but haven't played much)?

As a logistical question, are we able to get swag bags from the main convention before needing to head over to sign up for tournaments? Meaning, since both things open at 10am, I'm assuming I'm going to have to pick one or the other.

Swag bags haven't been available for people to pick up until 11:30 or so for the past few shows. I'd expect that to continue.

Is it PAX <insert nearest future PAX here> yet?
  • ComplexityComplexity Registered User regular
You honestly might as well wait anyway. Even if you can get there at 11:30, there usually ends up being no line half an hour before the hall closes, and everything is still available.

It's a rough question to answer. The non-Spell Draft ones probably are. 35 points tends to be more new player friendly but with any steamroller it is tough to gauge.

@lackey, I sooo appreciate your work here! Applause! (*)

I see one discrepancy on the Google Doc schedule. The timing for the D&D Adventurers League's epic event Corruption in Kryptgarden is logged as Saturday night at 8PM, but according to the official WOTC site it is the same time on Sunday night. I'd hate to see any of my fellow D&Ders miss out!
