Is it worth getting the magnum for an S+ Hardcore attempt? I'm thinking I'd save a lot of time by not doing any of the steps to get it, and it'd free up space for more ammo and healing that should get me through boss fights without it.

The Magnum is absolutely worth it. Its damage is ridiculous and getting its enhancement in the Sewer almost doubles that damage. You want that damage to make quick work of G3 with Leon. Leons final boss is just a timer. You have to survive for 3 minutes before you're given the Rocket Launcher and all damage does is shave some time off of that. The Magnum is great at that to, but you really want to just have tons of handgun ammo and the matilda for that so you can quickly pelt the boss with any kind of attack to stop his undodgeable one hit kill move.
You could also use some of its ammo to put a lot of hurt into G2 and potentially finish the fight with one swing of the crane saving you a lot of time. But I would use it primarily as a G3 killing machine.
On normal it takes 2 swings of the crane if you don't shoot him at all. I didn't shoot even one bullet during that fight. It's just a gimmick. I didn't even bother to stun him in the middle. I just failed a few times till I got the timing down on how to lure him into the middle and then run to safety.
Crane strike does a lot of damage (I think over 50%, less on Hardcore), and has to be used to end the fight. So just pounding it with enough ammo can bring it down low enough for just one swing to do the job. It's the fastest way, but very ammo-intensive so not worth it unless you're going for speed or the trophy.
I've always shot it to stun it, then called the crane back. Repeat as needed. Just hoping I'll manage to lure him into position while not being there myself hasn't worked out for me.

Thats good to know actually.
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
I'm playing through Assisted mode for funsies and to memorize sewer routes, and...does more ammo drop on that difficulty? A few handgun ammo pickups doubled up, one giving a whopping 30 rounds at once.

Oh yeah ammo in general is more readily available but I had like 150 extra handgun bullets chested on assist without having to make any

For Crane fight you can tell his health by the color of his shoulder eye when it gets all red and bloodshot you can end the fight with the crane that's how i got the trophy for only using the crane once on him.
Once you know when Mr X triggers his pursuit becomes fairly easy to plan around and it kills a lot of the suspense and horror he inspired the first time going in blind. for reference
His Triggers in scenario A is putting out the helicopter fire and entering the hallway and in Scenario B going into the stars office hallway has him trigger i am unsure if just entering the hallway triggers him or if heading to the unicorn statue room entrance

For B its.
Either entering the STARS office, or walking past the door to the STARS office toward the Unicorn Statue.
What happens to the helo to cause it to go down in the first place? I figured it was Mr X going berserk or something, but he seemed pretty obedient to the tasks he was given,

You hear the guy over the radio on the corpse you can examine your first time in the West Hallway, but I forget what he says. He might have said he's coming in to that location but has lost control or something.

There's some suggestion it was shot down. Probably by Nemesis

I'm making lots of saves so I can practice sections without restarting the entire thing because F that.
I've almost got G1 semi-reliable (knife knife knife grab use knife to escape, throw grenade, 2nd knife knife knife knife get hit heal knife knife knife win), which would mean I could push my first save back to the start of the sewers or something, which would be nice.
G-Adults did not want to cooperate at all. I've looked up multiple ways to dodge them and none of them seemed to work, so that ate up most of my grenades.
Made it to the lab at 2:02. This included me firing my infinite pistol at every damn zombie I met until its head blew up, so I'm pretty sure I can shave that down a fair bit.
Then the Ivys in the greenhouse seemed to double in number every time I turned around. If I just walk through and burn every last one after I use the herbicide, do more spawn while I'm dodging Mr X? I'd swear I got all of them, but I ended up trapped between him and two of them, and I ran out of defence items.

Oh my god that's right. I'd totally forgotten! Jill gets in contact with a helicopter pilot and they're coming to her location and the Nemesis shoots it down. It even looks like she was at or near the RCPD and that's where it crashed.
In Original RE2, the RPDs only overweight cop shot the helicopter down after suffering from an inability to kill two zombies with a machine gun (which would be more believable with the sturdy zombies from this game), and bought the chopper down in his death throes. The chopper in RE3 is a different one (and I think technically happens before Leon and Claire even show up).
For this game the cause of the crash remains a mystery (but it won't surprise me if the Survivor DLC shows it).
Finally finished my first run through, Leon A. In an amazing time of 16 hours and 39 minutes lol. The atmosphere in the game is just unbelievable. I still think the Mr X follow stuff felt out of place in a slower paced game for most of it. I screamed something fierce when he jumped through the lab window. I still believe those set pieces would have been fine.
So question about what to do next? I did a bit of digging and it seems like I should do Claire A if I want the story as the B plots are neutered (some folks mentioning DLC will flesh them out)?
B plot has a few minor changes and you need to do a B run for the 'full' ending. You also see a scant few new areas. If you don't appreciate Mr. X stopping by, the B run will probably be more harrowing.
I'd recommending swapping to Claire B. You've got the general layout and mechanics don't, so it'll probably be much speedier despite any giant be-hatted monsters.

It's hard to build an audience now yeah. I tried to get in on the Mario maker craze but my capture card didnt like the Wii.
Now though you can stream on almost everything with built in apps so one less hurtle

Ammo is pretty sparse though, so I wouldn't recommend making a bunch with gunpowder.
In Assisted/Standard it's pretty easy to do, yeah. In Hardcore it takes multiple unless you dump a LOT of ammo into him

For me I got 3 hours just by being generally assertive
wait what...you can move more than one at a time????
Now I go up there early and arrange everything so I can nail it fast when X starts showing up
For B its.
I trapped them all in the unicorn room once.

It offers a more stable shot
Worth it for that alone imo
I decided to grab it and it takes about 3 minutes so you can probably swing it if youre just going for S. I didnt get the flamethrower ammo though.
I did get the adorable Rebecca basketball picture that Creepo Wesker has in his desk
