Seriously, this event needs a coordinated raid or something now. WTF.

yeah weird ramblings aside I slapped on a full Flamethrower build and it's putting out some ridiculous damage with self sustaining fire field blasts/might for days. pretty good.
Apparently leveling is a train wreck now. The stat gating+downscaling works in such a way that your relative power bounces all over the place with each level, generally dropping with every level until you get another dollop of stats, at which point you reset to killing machine...then start getting weaker with levels past that. And the beginner experience has been seriously dumbed down, with complicated renown tasks like 'feeding cows' removed in favor of 'grinding mobs like it's Ragnarok Online'.
So I just started this up again after a 1yr hiatus, and I'm pretty out of the loop. Is there a current "returning players" thread/post somewhere? And a place for the current meta of builds (specifically Guardian, Warrior, and Ranger)? GW2 Guru is where I used to go but it looks like no one really posts there anymore, and a lot of builds I see are still using calculators that have the 70 or whatever skill points instead of the new system...

check the OP, there's some stuff listed for returning players. As for builds, most classes just got shaken up a bit by the latest patch so people are still feeling things out a bit. Rangers got a bit of a buff to a few things, but pets are still buggy and a problem for the class. Warriors have some adrenaline concerns, and Guardians are as OP as ever (both classes are still really good for melee and taking hits while dishing out good damage).
Ughghghg. I try to be welcoming and friendly to all dungeon runs, anytime I start a group I always list "newcomers welcome" and explain the hard fights. I just had the worst fucking P2 AC group. They just wouldnt listen while I was explaining fights, we died to spider 3 times, died to the trap fight once, and Ghost Eater about 5 times because of random pulls, not listening, one Ele talking shit about 'stupid zerkers' while using Settler weapons and running Ghost Eater in circles trying to dps instead of pulling him into traps to remove his invuln shield.
I just.. I needed to vent. That was so infuriating. I didnt yell at them or anything, but I was about to start pulling my hair out if we didnt end him that attempt. Jeebus H.

Yeah, they really, really messed up levelling.
It's not just a matter of oversimplification; pushing out the interesting abilities by huge numbers of levels, as well as changing the way stats are gained is bizarre, and the game just wasn't designed with that in mind.
...and of course, as always, Kill Hitler.

I guess I should probably wait a little longer than 1 day after patch to ask about builds lol.
I have one question I can't really find an answer to regarding legenardies. Before I took a break, I got sunrise and decided to transmute it to stats that I wanted. This was when legendaries were still exotic level. I didn't play at all during the 'transmutation splitter' item thing, so I never got to use that. Currently, I only have an exotic GS with the sunrise skin - am I boned out of my legendary now? I haven't figured out how to get my original legendary back, if that's even possible anymore....
I'm probably going to take a break from GW2 soon, because I'm starting a new job, but mostly because I'm playing the game too damn much. It's hitting the addiction part of my brain that's been frustrated with my current lack of progress with my career by giving me SOMETHING to progress in, which means I haven't been doing other important things (like, y'know, focusing on re-learning how to program in C++. That's sort of important.)
With that said, now that the patch has DROPPED, I actually rather like it! I just think the hype ramp up actually made it seem way more underwhelming than it actually is. If they'd compressed the info down into two days of posts and then just released it, I think people would have been a lot more hype, and the reaction would be better.
The new Achievements are both wonderful and horrible, because I like pretty princess dressup and now I'm trying to get all the things. I even started collecting spoons. God damn it, ArenaNet. I think the spoons are actually genius though, because they ARE a scavenger hunt, and they're going to force people to go into lower level zones that they may not have explored, and, in some cases, complete Renown hearts or Events they might not have bothered with. Sure have wasted a lot of gold crafting armor sets tho
Bad stuff: Leveling is totally borked, and I'm REALLY upset to learn that they removed some of the more fun Renown hearts in favor of boring ass "kill X." I mean that was one of the whole reasons I was excited about this game, the idea that I wouldn't have to grind mobs to level! That I could meander around, stare at pretty things, jump on stuff, or, well, FEED COWS or something! Actually last night in Dredgehaunt I found what may be my favorite Renown heart: you have to /emote at Skritt to entertain them. You have to dance, pretend like they're terrifying, laugh at their jokes, cheer them on... it's ADORABLE. Also, I know Sage is totally in love with the new Trading Post, but I'm having a tougher time navigating it. That's more because I was used to the old one, though. I do think the interface is too damn crowded, with that said.

Everything about the leveling/PS changes seem to me to be attempts to fix things that only the loudest complainers really wanted fixing.
The Leveling changes, spreading the basic things out to almost 40 and changing stat increases to massive boosts every x levels instead of gradual increases was to appeal to people who bitched about how there was "Nothing big" gained when leveling after unlocking your elite skill at 20.
The Personal Story is for everyone who hated having to level between individual missions in a plot, even if it was only 1-2 levels (which I kinda get, but I had pretty much always overleveled the PS by about the time it hits LA, so it wasn't an issue for me, but unlock at every 10 levels?) and putting the Source of Orr before pretty much the entire final chapter of the PS was for those who complained about it becoming Treesus' story at the end, and not yours (which I never felt was true... at all, and they didn't need to cut out the Greatest Fear missions to do it).
It's like they took every minor complaint about leveling and the PS, and went "hey, we should change that!" without every taking a single goddamn second to wonder if it was a good idea or not. Makes me glad I've already made one of each profession already, because the changes have pretty much killed any desire to make any new characters.
That being said, I like the rest of the feature so far: Mini tab, craftable backpieces, collection chevos to keep me entertained, FLAMETHROWER IS GOD!, and can't wait to do some more Wuving in the new Wuv season (even if we're never going to win). I just hope that Anet is going to post an apology for and plans to rollback the leveling/PS changes in the next week or so...
...yeah, fat chance, but if Mojojoeo can flapflapflap his dreams, I can have mine.

Im a still flapping too. Im really bummed out as I ENJOYED the heck out of GW2 leveling. i would love for them to just give a detailed "why" on some of the changes. I dunno.
that video is pretty well done... its not angry or anything just snark. And it really illustrates the issues better than any of the 20 reddit threads and tons of official threads ramblings.
Sounds like I should be glad I have a level 80 of every class already. I never had any issues leveling them or getting confused about abilities and such.
I wonder if its to sync up the leveling experience they provide in the Asian versions of the game, so there is less divergence to keep track of?
The devs have said that as players they actually find the dumbed-down low level experience pretty weird themselves, but apparently testing has found it is the best way to retain new people.
My initial reaction is skeptical but maybe I can see it. After all, if the question is "are people really that stupid?" the answer is always "yes". But even that aside, ANet has to account for people who haven't played MMOs, maybe haven't even played RPGs, who don't read the wiki, probably don't read the manual, have trouble with figuring out keybinds, etc.
Even so, I think they may have gone too far with it.
Does this mean that my just-over-level 30 engineer had his Elite Skill taken away?
Because if I log in and they took my fucking skill away I'm logging out and uninstalling. I already had to deal with them changing the trait system right when I finally got high enough to start using it, if they start taking more shit away from me I'm just not going to bother.

NOVEMBER. You had the feature pack time off(roughly a month) of doing LS and you need 2 more months? thats literally a month and a half of ls content- and then 3 months in between. nevermind the 3 months for china launch we heard nothing prior to this.
Im.... not flapping.
"look at us with our fancy Bi weekly updates they are better than an expansion" (warning biweekly updates only occur when we are not on break)? Flap this flapping mother flapping flap.

This update jives pretty well with my tendency to not play alts in that the new leveling system sounds terrible. I don't mind the tutorials for new players (although there should be a way for players who have done them with other characters to disable them) as much as the uneven progression.

I am sad, now. I've been playing through the S2 episodes with a buddy and we've been having a good time, even if it's just two hours every two weeks. But two more months before we get any content...
Excluding Halloween stuff, I guess. Which, I'll enjoy the jumping puzzle if there's another one, but. Yeah.

If it wasn't a big enough mess with changing the PS to start every 10 levels, confusing a fair number of people...
The 70 and 80 groups of PS have been switched, resulting in total inconsistency.
And the Greatest Fear group has been deleted, which is not only utterly idiotic, but also makes no sense in the story.
It's also a personal bit of insult, since they never, ever bothered to fix me and a fair number of others being shoved onto the Apatia path for no good reason, but now the PS is apparently important enough for them to mess around with it in the most bizarre, unrequested fashion.
The only thing I can think is that they were trying to appease the people who had such a hateboner for Trahaerne... 2 years after the fact, when those people never really had a great point to begin with.

Maybe, like, special elites that are functionally not great or just reskins of other elites that could be captured.
They're not going the direction I was hoping.
That said, the new UI is really nice, I think, though even busier than it was before.
