That was a hell of an opening match, too

WrestleMania XXX was a rock-solid PPV, it's the only one in the last decade I've seen but man it fucking delivered

It's a very weird thing, everyone I know who are asked about it always trouble explaining why they love it. Personally I like the characters.

storyline, on monday night raw 2 weeks prior to Mania he was on the receiving end of a brutal beatdown from HHH while handcuffed.

That's what passes for continuity in wrestling

Mania XXX is a great show, one of the best Manias of all time actually but it might be a better idea at least at first to cherry pick matches to watch rather than devouring whole PPVS, especially since one without at least one bum match is a real rarity.

Even Mania XXX has a couple bad matches (Taker/Lesnar is super boring and the divas match is a total clusterfuck)

It's a soap opera with great characters and really fun displays of physicality

Even in the '80s when they were pretty light on the story side of things, the sheer spectacle of what they put on, staged or not, is pretty impressive to behold

And the promos are so great

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C4lK41SX-Q

Macho Man was pretty much the greatest ever in both in-ring performance and his ability to cut a promo

  • BlankZoeBlankZoe Registered User regular

yeah this was one of the ones at the top of my mental list as well.

Cause again, as great as mania is - The Shield kinda don't get much to do on that show and Bray Wyatt... well, we'll let Blank discover that on his own.

My housemate got home so I worked up the guts to play more PT with company. We got up to MIDNIGHT and then had no idea what to do and went to bed.

It sounds silly but this is the first time I've really been sold on the idea of the current gen really bringing anything new to the table. I don't think wandering around the hallway would have been as scary without that extreme level of graphical fidelity.

    It's a circus/stunt show/high camp with a story and meta-analysis.

The Daniel Bryan story is a really good illustration of why people like wrestling. Real life under-dog and super talented journeyman Daniel Bryan bounces around for years, getting few real opportunities for a performer of his caliber, because he doesn't fit the mold of what a top guy should be, gets some huge opportunities, has them taken away, till growing audience appreciation and disgruntlement forces the WWE to do a story about fake WWE underdog Daniel Bryan, and his quest for the championship, a quest that remains in question, due to the vagaries evil Wrestle Law, and the real life fear of the WWE screwing things up.

A simple, straight-forward underdog story combined with in-story meta-commentary on the state of the wrestling industry.
The matches, when done well, have their own individual through-lines and tension, similar to a well done fight or action sequence in a movie, despite being almost as fake.

    Also, this: http://cdn2.sbnation.com/imported_assets/1759349/3igx6Ty_medium.gif

Of course, sometimes it's just dumb bullshit. But that's fun to complain about.

Let me put it this way, the Shield and the Wyatts were both bad guys during that match which almost never happens. The fans wanted it so much that it was willed into existence.

I think a lot of the appeal of wrestling for the nerds who post on these forums is it's the only storytelling art form that is simultaneously real and not real.

Like wrestlers legitimately get paid more if they win a lot and make it to the main event. But if they win a lot it's because it was decided by the company they work for that they are a main event level performer. So you have this really weird situation where someone who beats everyone and wins a lot is legitimately more successful than someone who loses all the time, but success was chosen for them because the promotion they worked for believes that the fans will like that wrestler better.

And part of what makes Daniel Bryan story great is that that line gets blurred to hell. You have the characters who own the company (who actually own the company) saying that he isn't cut out for this (which may have been an actual thought from them) and the fans got behind him enough that he had to be put in a main event position. Or was that planned and they had his back the entire time? Who knows!?
