Now that I have a PS4, I'm looking forward to joining everyone in some rather crazy adventures. And by joining I mean playing most of the time solo and invading and killing hapless wanderers.

About 50 minutes of. . .let's just call it gameplay. No boss. Just a fella horribly confused. Dies I believe once. Runs into one non-home NPC (but skips dialogue). Takes a peek at Bloodgem Fortification (my guess to how it works):
Three slots on each weapon, bloodgems have a shape and quality. He had a named bloodgem, of radial shape and quality 4. This shape says it's mostly for attacking. It also looked like you can "stack" gems on top of each other somehow.
What is most impressive is that this guy is farting about for this amount of time and it doesn't seem like he gets "much" of anywhere. Yahrnam looks gigantic.

I've said it before, but Dark Souls was my first real "we're figuring this out together and sharing our stories at launch" game here (beyond just lurking for years). All I want to know is - and I've seen some comments about multiplayer in the last few pages, but I'll ask anyway - is Bloodborne going to feature jolly cooperation? Will it have DS-like factions, some of which are more geared towards facilitating co-op? Yeah, I know the Souls games are about being alone and oppressed and surviving the terror of the dark by oneself. Just curious because I want to play along with some PAers if possible.

What I am most excited for. . .the return to a distinct art style. For a while playing DS2 I appreciated it's more unambiguous, "straight" art style. However you go back to DS1 and you just can't help but feel like there is a distinctive "voice" in how the game looks. I honestly think DS1 "looks" better than DS2, especially on the PC. DS1 has that weird "shimmer" (that was also in DS); the lack of it in DS2 kind of saps my interest in the world (though I find the overall gameplay better).
DS1 felt also more like one big connected place, like a bizarre M.C Escher painting. It felt more organic in the way areas changed from one to another instead of DS2's enter a door and now you're in Narnia.
The first book I ever read was Dracula, and I've been hooked on the Victorian/Gothic style ever since, so I'm practically frothing at the mouth over the art style.
Speaking of Souls 1 I've been wanting to go back to it but at this point my only option is the PC version. I remember when it came out people were saying that it wasn't a great port. What kind of shape is it in now? Are there any essential mods?

DSfix is essential. As in, it is almost unplayable without it.

I mentioned this before, but I am also in the camp of buying a new PS4. This Wednesday in fact. The best retail deal I think right now that I can find is if you are a GS power up pro member you can get a free year of PS plus with the purchase of a new PS4. We just missed the destiny for $10 more bundle unfortunately.
Question...I previously tried Dark Souls with the wrong mindset and just got as far as the Taurus Demon. Is it better if I just go back and give a shot to DS or just skip it and head straight into Bloodborne?
Dark Souls is a fine game, definitely worth going back for. But if you can't wait to play BloodBorne I'd say go for that first and then dive in to Dark Souls, I'm sure BB won't spoil your experience with Dark Souls.

Just jump into Bloodborne if that's what you want to do. A lot of the early feedback basically says you have to retrain a lot of your muscle memory if you're a Souls veteran anyway, so in some ways you'd probably have an advantage.
Dark Souls, Demon's Souls, and Dark Souls 2 are all 3 worth playing, so if you want to play them later, you can get the first 2 on previous gen consoles/PC, and you can get the PS4/PC version of Dark Souls 2 to play that one if you're into it as well.

You should give Dark Souls a shot because it's an amazing game worth playing, completely separate from the release of Bloodborne.

I quit the first time on that boss. Every strategy I saw online said to cheese it, and I didn't want to play that kind of game.
Went back like a year later and did it the right way. Quit a second time on Gargoyles. ;O
The previews of BB from the "trades" is very promising. I think the more fast paced combat is going to be a revelation. I also can not wait to see how these Chalice Dungeons work. One article mentioned
that you specifically use a chalice and "ingredients" to generate some of these dungeons. I'm curious if the ingredients go into the user generated dungeons with their being 3 or so FROM specific ones. That we have no idea what the rewards are going to be (more weapons, unique versions of existing weapons or upgrade materials) adds enough "to discover" mystique for me to get jazzed.

Dark Souls is absolutely a game which basically dares you to cheese it at points. Don't be surprised when Bloodborne is the same way. If you didn't like that aspect of Dark Souls, it's not going away in Bloodborne. Some bosses will still be stupidly difficult to the point of making you want to throw your controller out the window or cheese them.
Short of modifying the game in some way to get an advantage, there is no "cheese" in Souls games. The game will do everything in its power to defeat you. Anything you can do in-game to defeat it is fair game.

Eh, I'd say there were more than a few cheese tactics that were unintended by the developers.
A classic example was tricking the Maneaters into falling off the bridge in Demon's Souls. A winged enemy shouldn't be able to fall to it's death unless you can knock it out or cut off it's wings. It actually happened to me the first time I played the game. I didn't even realize there were 2 of them because the second one committed suicide without me doing anything.
Another example would be shooting enemies and bosses through fog gates.
First you have to jump/slash his face from atop that tower, then just run back and forth and throw firebombs at him. Or be a brave enough dude to circle around him and attack his legs in hope he wobbles off the wall.
The only method I can think of for TD is to get him to fall off the wall. That is a legit tactic, though.
That was what I was talking about. I called it "cheese" not because you are breaking the game, but because there is little (to me at least) in the way of accomplishment in that kind of victory. The plunge attack seems to be the tried and true form of beating that boss, and I think I've beaten him once in a straight up fight. It's the same (again, to me) as goading The Dragonrider to lunge at you. . .right the fuck off the ledge. I do it in EVERY single encounter now (because it's a boring fight) on a new character but I know there is little in the way of "victory" for me.
Now getting the Iron Golem to fall off, or parrying into an arrow in the chest on The Pursuer are those type of "inta-kill" victories that I can get behind.
I view it in this way; if I can envision some of the developers sitting down and thinking "wouldn't it be great if the players figured out you can do this. . ." then I'm cool with the method.
you can play a souls game where you charge headlong into every encounter until you've memorized the timing of every attack and can dodge everything well enough to kill everything in a straight fight
you can play a souls game where you abuse aggro ranges, shoot poison arrows and try to get things to fall off ledges. what would be called cheesing in any other game.
The difference between Souls and every other game is cheesing is still pretty fun. I have no interest in cheesing other games because it makes the game trivial and boring. Even when you're 'cheesing' in souls there's still a tension there, because you never know if the developers have included some way for the enemy to fuck you up even in this edge case.
That's the real genius of souls. Everything is on the table.
I loved "cheesing" Ceaseless Discharge and getting him to fall to his death. Though It's not exactly cheesing because he has unique animations for that death.
He jumps too far, clings onto the cliff with his hands barely holding on like Mufassa and trying to pull himself up, and you attack his hands gripping the cliff like Scar to make him fall to his death.

Of course. I read up on how some folks call that "cheese", but it's quite clearly designed into the game. Same as getting the Iron Rube to crumble over the side of the cliff.
I simply can't see the developers thinking "Ok, let's make it so the player never raises the platform and The Dragonrider - who has been guarding this platform forever - lunges off the side of the fighting area, or straight line paths to you from the narrow entrance to the platform and walks off the side."
I mean the developers can't plan for ever way a player is going to play the game. This is why I like playing these games blind for as long as possible; means you'll bang your head against the wall trying to defeat the bosses or enemies in gladiator style combat.
That boss is impossible with you're a heavy armor character, I had to undress to dodge attacks. The way I killed him legit is to go the far back near the alter and walk in circles, when he smashes down dodge and unload your attacks on his arm and repeat that. Tricky part is gambling where he's going to slam down, fire resistant armor helps a bit.
