Where's the Morphine Grid? I'm just asking for a friend.

The best episode I've caught so far during the Twitch marathon was the one where Justin finds out that all of the other rangers are robots one by one, and then (I can't believe I'm putting this in a spoiler tag):
But the tone is fun. Not to say it doesn't get serious, but it's overall light, hopeful, and downright goofy in spots
The casting agent deserves a medal. Everyone is excellent to varying degrees. Alpha, billy, and Rita are stellar.
The fights are fast and fun. The effects are largely good and I think the designs look good on screen
Music is solid and helps being out the sense of camp when they want to.
The main thing I was impressed by was character work. Everyone is just a little deeper than they need to be, and with the exception of maybe trini, seem like good extensions of their original characters.
Hey Chincy, I'm really glad you liked the movie. If anyone deserved to have a good time at the Power Rangers movie it's the dude with a Power Rangers podcast. I'm excited to hear you all talk about it once I finally catch up on TWA.
Hoping I'll get a chance to see the movie this weekend. I'm a lot more excited for it than I thought I'd be.

I was worried it was gonna end up like the first turtles reboot movie where I got really excited and then it was just ok (though I loved the second) But I really did like it a lot
I thought it was awesome. Definitely better than I expected, and I'm honestly impressed with some of the choices they made. It's the kind of movie a fan can appreciate, but appeals to new viewers as well.
The suits and zords work a lot better in motion.
Characters:
Making them strangers was a great move. It created a natural arc for them, dovetailing nicely with having to earn their powers.
Billy was the standout. He stole every scene he was in, and had fantastic chemistry with the other rangers, particularly Jason. His presence made their friendship feel real. There's a line towards the end, "thank you for being my friends," that may or may not have left me a little misty eyed.
Adding a little moral ambiguity to Zordon's actions, and some conflict with the rangers, went a long way to making him a person rather than exposition with a face.
They neatly dodged the pitfalls of writing leader characters by focusing Jason's arc on his failures and on earning the trust of the team.
Zack and Trini don't have as much to do as the others, but the performances were rock solid. While it's about damn time we have an LGBT superhero front and center on the silver screen, Trini doesn't actually do all that much in the movie. However, her backstory firmly establishes the outcast narrative the movie pushed. Zack is mainly comic relief, though he does well in the dramatic scenes.
Rita has flashes of interest, but it feels like they're saving the meat for a possible sequel. Sounds like her betrayal of the original team may have had more shades of gray than might initially appear.
Plot:
The storyline itself is simple, which is exactly what it needed to be. As soon as the rangers meet Zordon, we have the basics: Rita wants MacGuffin, there's a strict deadline, the fate of the world is at stake. Unburdening the story from lore or a complex plot left all the room the real story: whether or not these "five teenagers with attitude" are worthy of their power.
Feels like a lot of the changes to lore were made to serve this KISS principle. Rita being the original Green makes sense, as does Zordon leading a doomed ranger team. Using the Zeo Crystal means there's finally a reason to hang around Angel Grove as opposed to any other place on Earth.
Sequel Theories:
Assuming they get their 5 movies, here's what I'm thinking.
The second one is obviously the evil green ranger arc. Figure Rita's weakened after her defeat, so she uses Tommy as a catspaw while scheming from afar- classic Rita, basically. It'd be interesting if they dropped the mind control aspect, and had Tommy join her of his own free will- like, she gives him the power to save his family or somesuch. Add some weight to the conflict, a real arc for Tommy, and a chance to show why Rita betrayed the team.
Third one brings in Zedd. After that, I hope they adapt the rest of the Zordon Era.
Also, I'm pretty sure Jason's dad knows by the end. If they're smart, they'll use the fact that the rangers have to constantly lie to their families.
I haven't seen the movie yet (about to fix that shortly) but preemptively declaring it to be the first in a six part series might the single greatest act of hubris I've ever seen

Seven. The next six are all supposed to be part of one 'saga'.
Yeaah I really liked the movie a lot and I want them to get to do a sequel, which I'm honestly worried about given Beauty & The Beast appears to be an absolute juggernaut for some reason

That also came with a big ol' self-denegrating quote where Saban called the original show shit and said "kids today have better standards than that and wouldn't watch something like that garbage" (paraphrase).

But 6 is... a lot
it's a live action version of one of the most popular disney movies of all time, starring emma watson. On top of critical success of the latest live action Disney re-make. All it's going to do is print money

So, y'know, continue to fuck off Haim Saban.
I definitely only have my 6 year old son as a test audience, but I've shown him the first two episodes of power rangers in the last month and he asked if we could watch something else. (specifically the netflix voltron cartoon) The early seasons are definitely...really rough and I don't think that's a crazy statement.
I'd take the "we have six sequels planned!" thing with a huge grain of salt. That talk is pretty standard in Hollywood these days. Just be thankful they haven't announced nine spin-offs and a prequel yet

I still think
Jason David Frank should straight up be a villain in one of the movies. Imagine Zed doing a sick KYAH while kicking some rangers
Yeah, I don't see Power Rangers having that kind of staying power.
Like, I kind of see THIS movie as a novelty thing.
They wanna do 7 of them? Good luck with that.
I don't know if the movie will do well enough justify sequels.
But I also don't know if we should really question the staying power of a franchise that's been on the air for more than 20 years.
And honestly, Beauty's popularity might end up helping the movie. As long as it doesn't completely bomb, they can claim it's a success- after all, who would blame them for coming in second to a Disney kids movie?
On the Twitch stream, RPM is currently expected to start airing tonight around 9:30pm EST if there are no more delays. If you haven't seen it and don't have access to Netflix, you should try and give it a watch (at least up to episode 11 or so, if possible).
You may recognize the Yellow Ranger in that series as Liv from iZombie, and the Red Ranger from the first season of Spartacus, The Originals (Vampire Diaries spinoff), and Jessica Jones. The human-female-looking villain that a Power Rangers season always seems to have is played by an actress who had a recurring role in the Teen Wolf series, and the main character in CW's Reign if anyone watched that.
Jungle Fury is currently airing today until RPM's debut tonight. Jungle Fury's not as widely regarded, but might still be worth checking out due to the unmorphed fights and the mentor character (who later was the Voice & MoCap of Vergil in the DmC Devil May Cry reboot...regular Vergil having already been back in Time Force). You might also recognize the Jungle Fury Yellow Ranger from Cabin in the Woods or the third season of Spartacus.

Anecdotal counterpoint, my six year old nephew watches everything with power rangers on it on Netflix including MMPR and dosn't bat an eyelid. He basically watches "power rangers" and just picks a series at random.

That's the canonical spelling in pretty much all PR market. Comics, toy merch, etc.
Oh nooooooooo
Its like Mortal Kombat and the letter K
I'm guessing it's a lot easier to copyright Morphin' Grid than it would be if it was spelled out as a full word.
Okay see that's a morphing grid, but it's not The Morphin Grid.
I laughed and laughed and laughed.
I think I'll see it as it has reached the bar I set of "reviewers aren't calling it one of the worst movies of the year"
Really
Really liked this movie
It's not perfect

And most importantly
The power of friendship.
After watching the show a bunch that seems about right

You joke, but MMPR had its name changed in a country with drug problems because they felt that Morphin was too close to Morphine
