"Not a huge strike, but enough gold not to be left out in the cold. A lot of worse fates out there..." The grizzled old man trailed off as callused fingers, bent and gnarled from years of back breaking labor, slowly combed through the steel gray beard hanging from his chin. His eyes seemed distant, as if staring into the past, as he remembered the triumph of holding that cold, glittering gold in his trembling clutches. Finally he turned, snorting and spitting into the brass spittoon to his right.
Dark gritty reboot of educational adventure games! TIME TO MAKE EVERY SINGLE MONEY.
I decided to stick it out and play through Yakuza 1. It's a blurry mess on a modern TV, the fights are repetitive and the voice acting is pretty lousy. I'm also skipping sidequests almost entirely as the game does a really lousy job of cataloging them (no waypoints on the map, or even archived summaries after you talk to the NPC. It just lets you know you have a quest and that's it).
But it still oozes a ton of cool and it only makes me anticipate the followup games more.
I feel like I should revisit FF6 and Chrono Trigger
I've often stated that it was Ted Woolsey who effectively taught me English and it would be interesting to see if I could identify anything I picked up from those sources
I'd say CT. I believe it's shorter (and sweeter!) than FF6. You can't go wrong with either anyway.
Update: URGH, work fucked up my hand. Seems like carpal tunnel I had to slow down these past few days. It hasn't helped that FFX has such a sloooooow start. Hopefully some Advil and ice will get my hand to 100%.
I still really enjoy playing through Chrono Trigger every few years. The nostalgia bias is pretty strong, but that game has lost absolutely none of its charm for me
My own 'old game/backlog' list has gotten intimidating in the last year, now that I've been putting my console-heathen past behind me and getting into everything I missed out on. I mean, how the hell am I gonna find time to play and fully enjoy:
Age of Empires II
Baldur's Gate
Baldurs Gate II
Deus Ex
Fallout
Fallout 2
Half-Life
Planescape Torment
Alpha Centauri
Civilization III
SW:Republic Commando
SW: KoToR II
SW: Jedi Academy
System Shock 2 (ok, I actually did complete this one, but I already am thinking of another play-through)
Thief Gold
Thief II
Ultima 7
yeah, when it comes to that, Civ III, and A. Centauri, I plan to just play a few of the most interesting campaigns or complete games with the most interesting factions and call it good.
Current top contenders for next major focus are Yakuza 2, Catherine, Danganronpa and Persona 4 Golden.
The last two come courtesy of the Playstation TV I acquired yesterday. Golden is especially tempting, but I also worry that will just move Persona 3 farther and farther away.
I started getting back into RPGs, and in just a selection of very recent titles, the estimated hour count is daunting.
Bravely Second, Bravely Default, Witcher 3, Xenoblade 3DS, Xenoblade X, Persona 5, Dragon Age Inquisition, that Etrian Odyssey/Mystery Dungeon crossover, SMT4, Persona Q... well, if each were only 60 hours long (total, including time spent mucking around due to game-overing and time spent watching cutscenes), that would be 600 hours of playtime. Spread over 12 months, that would be 50 hours a month, or about 12.5 hours a week.
Alternatively:
Number of weekends in a year: 52
Number of days in those weekends: 104
Number of hours in those weekends: 2496
Hours remaining after subtracting 8 hours per day of sleep from those: 1664
Hours remaining after subtracting 2 hours per day for eating and hygiene: 1456
If I only played on weekends, and have that highly optimized uptime on weekends, I could burn through those 10 titles with that estimated hour count in just under one half of all the weekends in an entire year. I wish that these games had some kind of.... I don't know, "expedited" mode. I don't want the game to be much easier because a little bit of challenge makes the game a lot more satisfying, but something to make the game go by faster because playing it is prohibitive in quite a literal sense. What's worse, I know that the 60 hour estimate is a huge underestimate for some of those games which I've heard clock in at 100 hours or more.
So it's "Finish February" in case that gives anyone some extra motivation. I counted up my unfinished games. I'm really going to put a dent in my backlog this month.

Wolf Among Us
Wow it's really something when you actually type out your Steam backlog....
Halfway through February and I've beaten A Wolf Among Us, Sherlock Holmes Crimes and Punishments, Fire Emblem Awakening, and Super Mario 3D World.
It's great. I played on Normal, Classic Mode and by the end my characters were super strong. I ditched the original characters in favour of the child characters as soon as I could. I wonder if I could handle Hard.
I was barely paying attention to the story though.
Ok I've started Orc murder simulator, aka Shadow of Mordor and damn. I'm having tons of fun just running around killing Uruks...but at this rate I'm gonna spend the whole month on this game. If I just stick to the main story quests, will I be "underleveled"?

No, mainlining the story until you unlock some of the domination stuff is not a bad idea.
It's real good! Up until last night that was pretty much going to be the extent of this post
But last night I spent an hour and a half trying to beat a frustrating race for an hour and a half, and now all I can think is that open world races are bullshit

I tend to agree, but Sleepy Dogs cars handled pretty well, I thought.

Maybe you were driving something crappy?
It's possible, but it was also something I had to earn from one of the DLC packs
I've never had much luck with motorcycles, though, which is what the entire race was
Plus it was called "Enduro" because it took 6 minutes to run through it, so I suppose it was supposed to be difficult
As far as Sleeping Dogs' driving goes, I think it's fun to drive in this game, but I'm not sure if it's actually any good

Oh.
Motorcycles.
Also, yeah. Six minute race sounds like a rough one.
And I would say Sleeping Dogs has good driving. It's easy to control, fun, and lets you do what you need to, from avoiding traffic in a sensible drive to slamming around in a high speed chase to jumping out the window and making all the cars around you explode. Seriously, more games need that action hijack system.

I would agree on the action hijacks, but the rest of it...
Well.
Let's just say that I never, ever got full police score on a mission if there was driving in it.
Ok one more down! Middle Earth: Shadows of Mordor is done! I actually enjoyed so much more than I thought I would! Definitely recommended and it's the perfect length I think. Took me about 15 hours. Ok, I think I'm gonna do South Park first and then FC3.
Ok! Just took some time off South Park and I got The Fall off my list. I can't say I loved the gameplay and some puzzles had some weird solutions, especially at the beginning. Looking forward to this sequel. So "The List" looks like this right now:
Resident Evil Remake HD Castlevania: LoS2 FFX HD
FFX-2 HD 2
KH 2 HD
KH BBS HD Shadows of Mordor
Half Life 2
Fez
Ys Origin
Beyond Oasis
Phantasy Star 2
Phantasy Star 3
Phantasy Star 4
FFIX
La Mulana The Fall
Divinity OS
FF 8
FF 4
FF 3
Valiant Hearts
Captain Toad
Just gotta keep avoiding FIFA and Dragon Age MP and I'm good

I'd suggest saving AoE2 for last. That thing is like a hundred hours minimum with all the expansions

Who are type favorites? There are correct answers and I will silently judge you of you choose wrong
I liked most of the characters and by the end everyone was either a sage, a bow knight, or a dark flier.
magic is so op
As many heroes as possible.
Stabbin' dudes with axes 24/7.
Why I fear the ocean.
Not at all, 2-3 hours.
I started playing it a few hours ago, looked up, and realized it was 3 AM.
YAY!
But I lost my memory card

The really fast vehicles were ludicrously so
I took those things and drove them between trucks on the highway in that game.
I found the driving very fun and forgiving.
Especially jumping off a fast bike into a fast car.
