i care a lot less about BBT being "nerd blackface" and more about it just being schlocky, and the astronomical ratio of popularity to quality that it has

Yeah in an era where a lot of more modern sitcoms are like

Actually good
I'm always baffled by its popularity
We live in a world where Conan was too "weird" so NBC had to bring back Jay Leno because a very large demographic wants the most milquetoast entertainment possible. Like a glass of warm milk at bedtime is the pinnacle of their evening activities.
This is the same demographic that watches Big Bang Theory and CSI/CSI:Miami/CSI:Kathmandu.
I don't have the energy to get mad about stuff I don't like being popular anymore. I mean, I get it, because I definitely have been angry that like, NCIS outdid Lost in the ratings, but ehhhhhhhhn
It's... it's not an ad hominem, either. Feargahil is pointing out that your source of information is dishonest.
He's pointing out that he doesnt like the mans politics. I dont happen to like them either, but that doesnt mean he is wrong on a particular subject.
No
He's pointing out they are factually inaccurate
quote: You brought up Yiannopolous, and I pointed out that he's someone that treated gamers like trash right up until it became useful for him to pretend to defend them. He's also overtly misogynistic and transphobic, but he claims to agree with gamergate so I guess that's enough for you folks.
Tell me which part of that explains factual inaccuracies of Mr. Yiannopolous statements.

All I know about Big Bang Theory is that one guy was in Roseanne and it was twenty years ago and where the fuck has my life gone?
I felt the same way when I tried to watch the show based on a friends recommendation. I also found its portrayal of "nerds" to be negative in the extreme.
Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.

So... are you saying misogyny and transphobia are just politics? Because I would call that awful people myself.

the phrase "Mr Do is a garbage digdug" was in my saved draft for this thread and I have no recollection as to why

And as far as the "they're laughing at someone with aspergers!" shit goes...Community is right there, making the same asshole jokes about it. They're just a little more clever, most of the time. And you know what? They've done some decent stuff humanizing Sheldon and the kind of problems someone with that kind of condition might go through.
Yeah here is where I'm going to have to strongly disagree. First of all, I feel Abed is a MUCH more reasonable portrayal of someone with that kind of disorder. Second, saying BBT's treatment of Sheldon and Community's treatment of Abed are comparable is pretty ludicrous. In BBT you laugh at Sheldon. In Community you laugh with Abed. The tone around the two characters is just entirely different.
Personal story time!
I'm 34 and my dad is 60. Growing up we didn't mesh because I was interested in nerdy things like reading, playing video games, reading comic books, etc., and he wanted me to play football, be tough, and get the girls. He was an 80s-era be a man kind of father and just couldn't understand why I liked the things I liked.
Two years ago I stayed with him for a summer during an internship. We've gotten closer over the years, but there's still a gulf where he just doesn't understand me very well, perhaps because he just can't. In an effort to get closer to his son, he asked me to watch Big Bang Theory with him every night because "It's funny and they're just like you!"
It's super sad because his heart was in the right place, but he couldn't help identifying me with these caricatures on Big Bang Theory, caricatures that I was nothing like other tha my interest in "nerdy" things.

Do you think this adds to the discourse? It's no substitute for intelligent debate, if you are capable of such.
He's probably talking about me. I had the gall to imply that journalism and awards programs should strive for integrity.
Right
So why is gamergate only going after the smallest people possible

I have to imagine that you type these things out with a straight face while you post opinion and speculative pieces that cite no sources as undisputed fact with no irony whatsoever.
ceres on
And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

You attacked Anita Sarkeesian because you knew that she had lied about contacting the police, and then when confronted with the fact that what you knew was completely false, accused her of wasting police time on internet threats. But sure, you're just here pushing for integrity.
Let's just all shelve this debate for now and bring it up out of the blue a week to ten days later so nobody remembers what the hell anyone else was talking about.

I think there is no discourse to be had with someone who is intellectually dishonest to the point where they call baseless accusations "evidence" and continue to support them after someone has sat through their nonsense video and explained exactly why they are baseless accusations.
I think you are here to stir up trouble and have no interest in meaningful discussion, no interest in looking at evidence, and no interest in doing anything other than pushing an agenda which you have decided you support long before looking at any evidence.

I love the SkullGirls one.
Because the argument boils down to, "Women are incapable of contributing to their own objectification."
no, but I should
