Glad to hear they fixed Esper. I tend to play turret mage DPS classes in MMOs, so figured I would play an Esper at launch last year.
BOY WAS THAT A MISTAKE. I made it halfway through the ball-bustingly hard attunement process for dungeons at max level before I gave up.
I'm not sure if I'll have time for another MMO with FFXIV taking up most of my free time. Maybe I'll install and see what changes they made when F2P goes live, I hope it goes well for them.
You think dominion will be the lease played, Axen? that surprises me. I mean, I know 'evil' tends to be less played in MMOs from what I've seen, but all the races on Dominion (besides boring humans) are SO awesome, where as most of the Exile races are terrible (imo of course).
I was hoping most would go Dominion because I totally want to play a Draken.
Also normally I'm a ranged sort of person. Previous I played Engineer, Esper, Spellslinger, Medic...all fun. But I might actually play a Warrior or Stalker just to mix it up a bit. Warrior's attire is just so cool looking.
Medics are a fairly short ranged class, but I maintain that medic telegraph shapes and sizes are the best in the game.
Admittedly I only played Medic and Spellslinger to very early levels.
One thing I find odd with the warrior so far is the leap attack. There's no way to telegraph it to know the distance without hovering over it..it'd be nice if you could hold the attack button and it show the telegraph, then you could release it to perform the move. Though I imagine after playing a while the distance feels natural even without the telegraph.

All of the dash abilities are like that, medic's urgency among them.
You end up being able to estimate where you end up pretty well, but you generally don't use them if you're aiming for a small precise area, unless you've pre-measured the distance.
Makes sense! I usually like to wait and see what skills classes get as I level instead of looking at it ahead of time because it feels like a surprise...but I'm thinking this time I need to research and see what all skills the melee classes have to see if they would keep my interest. I tend to like a lot of more fun skills and skills that are just different ways to damage things aren't always my cup of tea. But I just saw that warrior has that buzzsaw wrist attachment thing, and that looks very entertaining to me.

Yeah that is my prediction. As I recall from launch the Dominion was pretty out numbered, I think like 2 to 1. And while the PTR might not be the most accurate model on what F2P Live will be in my experiences so far I've noticed a lot more players in the Exile tutorial ship and starting zones compared to the Dominion tutorial ship and starting zones.
Players tend to gravitate more to "good" factions and on top of that players also tend to gravitate towards "pretty" races. Exiles can safely check off both those boxes. edit- Oh yeah, and they have that whole Space Cowboy vibe going on. I mean seriously, that just isn't fair.
That said, my personal favorite race is Mechari.
Also, come F2P while I do think the Dominion will have less players I seriously doubt (especially with how things are set up now) that anyone will have trouble finding a group or anything.

To answer about the Dominion population, it's pretty likely that Dominion will end up the least played because it already is. Even at the height of the launch population, it was Exile favored(something like 3 Exile to 2 Dominion), with Aurin being the the most popular race(followed by Exile Human). And then when the population began to collapse, Exiles with the larger playerbase was better able to absorb the losses, which caused a lot of Dominion players to switch(to get better/easier access groups and guilds) making the problem worse.
So now, it's complicated. Exiles are generally more popular, and it's reasonable that all things being equal, you'd expect the Exiles to be get more players by the virtue of being people's first choice because of fluff. But many players who's first choice is Dominion are on the Exiles now, and have ties to them(such as guilds and friends on the Exiles). Now some may switch back, but many won't. Furthermore, new or returning players many choose to forsake going their first choice of Dominion for Exiles because Exiles already have a noticeably larger playerbase, and may just choose Exiles for playability/social reasons.
The pickings on Dominion are slim and the feedback loop population has makes it unlikely that'll change. That's why people want to do cross-faction stuff, since that would allow players to play their favorite race/faction without worrying about playerbase/population issues and can just play their favorite.
This is one of the many reasons I hate the whole two+ faction system that has become so popular in MMOs. I at least prefer it when there's a way to work on gaining faction with other groups so that you could play elsewhere if wanted, but no faction at all is certainly a lot easier and causes less problems.
I'm always anti anything that limits my race/faction/class combos.

That's one of the few things that I will absolutely agree was a mistake from the very moment they started development through now. Two-faction is a pox.

I have been saying that forever. It was literally the first complaint I had about this game, especially since I had been playing GW2 prior.
There are still plenty of defenders on it though. But it is downright idiotic to have this anymore. PVP is the only reason for it and PVP barely ever fits lore anyway so who cares if you do not have sides.

Oh yeah agreed. Playing GW2 and FFXIV has basically solidified my stance that two faction divide is awful. Especially, especially when the factions are divided by race. The only asterisk I'd put on that is if your game is going to have a heavy PvP focus, then by all that is Sacred and Holy have three factions! Even then, I'd say GW2's way is better. Pit server against server against server instead of dividing one server's entire player base.
Off the top of my head the only MMOs I can think of that did factions right and okay are The Secret World and EQ2.
TSW did factions right. They had no real effect on things outside of the PvP battleground.
EQ2's faction system was okay. At least for the first year or so they had two factions, but they weren't completely race locked. Some races automatically fell in with one side and some races could go either way. Still, one of the more fun things it let you do was betray your faction and join the other. This also caused your class to change to the opposite side's equivalent. Though I may be biased in my love for that system since I worked my ass off to betray Freeport and join Qeynos thus becoming one of, no joke, two Troll Paladins on my server, at the time anyway.
edit- Actually EQ2 raises a good point. There is little to no reason NOT to have some sort of system that allows a player to betray their faction and join the other.
Either have it like EQ2 where it took a fair amount of effort and time or make it a simple quest chain or hell make it a paid service.
If Devs are worried about people flip-flopping constantly (and I've no idea why they would worry) just make it a once per character deal.

Axen - EQ2 is my example of how to do split factions the right way. The fact that betraying to the other side had a cool, involved quest also helped. I loved that game back in the day.

Oh god I would love to play Dominion Aurin or something.
A little sad that getting invited to the ptr beta not only doesn't allow me the level 50 service but also doesn't bring my level 50 over.
If you have a current sub you can copy any of your characters over. Just log in to that character and type /ptrcopy in the chat box. I guess it can take a little while for it to happen though.
Alternatively if you still got one of those "Come back and try the game, things have really changed!" promotions that'd work too.
I have neither of those things.

Yeah no sub. It just sucks that my beta test is only going to be of the starter zone. I might level the char to 10 or so just cause, but I am not putting any amount of effort into that when I will be doing it again in a few weeks.
I was just hoping to be able to actually see all the changes and maybe fiddle with some classes at 50 to see what I liked. Apparently all the settings for weather you should be able to do any of this were hard copied when PTR began. So doing anything now is useless.
Really think the make your char 50 flag shoulda been on for anyone invited to beta test it. Since lots of the changes really are for higher levels.

According to Carbine for the F2P changes the majority of them have been for the lower levels and the leveling experience as a whole.
From what I hear, not sure if it is true, but people who've been playing the game for a long time tell me that the level 50 experience has been significantly changed since last March-May on the Live servers. Between the current Live server and the PTR server there isn't much difference in the endgame experience. I am also told that it is actually good now.
However, if you're like me and haven't played since launch, then it's all going to be new and exciting at the endgame.

It is not so much endgame as it is the final product with the classes. But there were significant changes to the dungeons at least.
I wonder if the open beta client will patch all the way to FTP once that goes live... although I can't actually remember if I ever uninstalled the beta client after trying it out and deciding not to buy the game.
Either way, I'll definitely be giving this a shot once FTP launches.
Oh hey, turns out you totally can turn your character level 50 in the PTR.
When you make a new character and get to your starting zone turn around and next to the shuttle should be an NPC with a check mark. Talk to them and get sent to your faction's capital. There you'll see another NPC that'll boost you to 50.

Did you have an active sub before the PTR? I thought it was only for people who did.
Edit: Nope seems you were right. I think they might have added that since I last logged on cause I didn't find that before. Or I was just blind.

It's what you would consider an Artifact honestly, this is if you were speaking in terms of an MMO like WoW, meaning not many if any at all per server. Legendary in WS are orange items and epics purple.
Keep me honest here!
And yea, he deserves the crap out of that thing! Grats dudes!
So I'm considering getting into this when it goes f2p. How does it hold up nowadays? I've been playing ffxiv but am getting bored by the lack of combat content at max level. (1 raid and some weekly grinds)

Still about the same as it was at launch but more polished. Bugs have been removed, the UI cleaned up and there's more end game stuff.
In my opinion, it's still the best MMO on the market right now for gameplay. It's really hard to go back to games without double jump now. The housing is also worth taking a look at when it goes FTP. I'm not usually the kind of person who does anything outside of raiding but the housing in wildstar sucked me in and I spend way too much time working on my forest/jungle plot.
