been staying out of the thread because i need to control my hype, so i have what might be a noobish question: are captains a limited commodity? i've only played a couple hours so i'm still learning how to play and haven't touched most of the game, but i want to kill lots of them. will that be a problem?

i'm ScubberMcHaggis on xbone if anyone wants to avenge me along the way.

Yea I had this one Captain that just would not die. He kept on coming back with scar after scar after scar. This was before I read that kotaku tip page that says there are only certain ways to permanently kill Captains. When I ran into him for our ultimate showdown:
at the Black Gate, since he was my nemesis - very fitting.

I was amazed to see him still alive, and his head was completely covered in a burlap sack, except for very crude eye, mouth, and nose holes. Blood was coming out of all of them. It was awesome.

I once tried to stop an Execution thing and while I was trying to kill the Captain and his bros I used that Wraith Explosion AoE thing.

I uh... killed all the people he was going to execute with it by accident and he got credit for it, and leveled up.

I was just wandering around shanking orcs one night when one of the crossbow using captains (who had previously killed me) appeared randomly. He also had that warhorn ability. So within seconds all of mordor was around me.

Luckily i exploited a weakness of orcs...they can only climb ladders. I scaled a cliff with a ladder next to it. The next ten minutes was hilarious. As another orc would reach the top of the ladder i would punch him off to his death. More than one orc? Did the grab followed by the throw off the cliff. Eventually killed enough of them and force choked the captain. Foolish orc, don't you understand the consequences of choke points and gravity?

So Polygon just put out the most hilarious click-bait article I've seen in a while. Did you know it's inappropriate for the same button to be used for killing as kissing? Seriously, it's a major problem in society. Completely insensitive.

I think the author was overthinking it, but it's fine to point out how unusual it is to present the tutorial for "how to silently murder" in the context of kissing your wife.

Regardless of the quality of the article, I'm glad to see game writing that steps outside of the typical cycle of news, previews, reviews, and the occasional feature.

My favorite so far is one Captain, I forget his orc-y name, but he was labelled the Poet.

When he first saw me, he gave a three line stanza about how pretty my blood would look on the ground.

I couldn't bring myself to kill him.

I don't mind in depth dives in to mechanics that are worth deep diving in to. This is a 20s snippet of a multi-hour game that most people (me included) will all but forget happened in moments. If we want to take a deep dive design look at the nemesis system or something worth deep diving on, I'm all for it...but this article is a case study in over thinking an inconsequential issue.

Except the tutorial for stealth kills is the next scene. For all we know, Talion always used the X button to kiss his wife and it changed once they were invaded. No more time for kissing, all that's left is killing.

@Hoz, I tried to avenge your death at the hands of a Man-Slayer. Except he was power level 16 and in a stronghold, so he kicked my ass and decided I wasn't worth the trouble of executing. So sorry.

Generally: OMFG this game is so much fun. I've never done any of the batman games before. This game has the "just one more quest" allure of Civilization, with the satisfying combat and sense of strategic process that Mount & Blade has. After a series of disappointments with AAA titles this is so refreshing.

I saved up for one of the three elfcoin finishers before buying anything else. All I have to do is get a bunch of orcs nearby, then I go sneak and trigger "freely murder everyone around you". The stealth one is hilarious. Shank. Shank-shank. Shank. Shank-shank. I killed 50 orcs as part of a sword quest with that.

It's Polygon. Polygon is basically all click-bait. Has been for some time.

A site that publishes this article is most definitely not all click-bait.

Plus the super long article about the history of Street Fighter full of back stage stuff.
Plus the 6 month long series of articles about Hidden Path and the making of DG2.

They have dozens of amazing long form articles about all kinds of fascinating stuff.
Any single one of those articles is leagues above anything most other sites ever published in their entire existences.

I mean, I don't think there any other gaming site that comes even close to being half as good as Polygon is.

It's not weird at all that you use the same button for "sneak attacking" your wife with a kiss as sneak attacking orcs with a knife. It's the sneak attack button. I sometimes sneak up behind my daughter and tickle her, and I use the same grabbing hands I'd use to sneak up and murder somebody were I inclined to do so. No articles are necessary to point out how odd this is. =P

I wasn't aware of this as I hadn't used the site before, going to do some google sleuthing to figure this out. My copy was a preorder code and iirc GMG is still retailing those too, right?

Except that it's not one tone-deaf article. It's becoming a trend with Polygon to put out these click bait articles that happen to touch on a hot button issue of the time. Notice how the author tries, at least halfheartedly, to weave in the current sexism discussion with a discussion about a button. He doesn't go all out and say "This button choice is obviously sexist and supports violence against women!", but he implies it at the start of the article.

Death Threats is a 3rd or 4th tier Power. Do you have the "red icon" missions yet? If not, do more story missions. If so, those are where the "Avenge" missions pop up.
