Guys, I'm having trouble with this goddamned black captain. I've shot, stabbed, burned and mauled this bastard and he's come back with armor plating, missing half his face and with enough ability buffs that make him damn near impossible to kill. He also is armed with a poisoned crossbow and calls in reinforcements when attacked. Any suggestions?
Do you have Combat Brand? I've found it to be a huge equalizer, just because the branded orcs act as meat shields to keep the adds from swarming you. If you focus on building your own numbers, eventually your makeshift army is big enough to handle any summons and can even take out the captain for you themselves.
There are a bunch of trick combos you can pull if you get the right runes that can make you unstoppable, but if you don't want to be at the mercy of the RNG, then here's one that works as long as you have Vault Stun and combat brand: flip over the mob, follow up with flurry, once you get to 8 (or later, 5), immediately spam combat brand on a nearby mob. Wash, rinse, repeat. As long as you don't try to brute force the combo meter and block whenever necessary, it's a foolproof way to win nearly any captain fight.
Also, don't be afraid to build up your own army before taking on the captain directly.
Also, no captains are immune to wraith flash. It takes literally forever but it does work. Get the combo meter up and then AOE spam.
Yup, that was my way of deal with immune captains. Use their buddies as punching bags, then combat finish the cap. Or AoE burst if I had to. Note on that: the bigger the combo, the more the damage.

I'm still in the pre-brand zone. I know I can ignore the bastard until I get better runes, but the fact that he keeps killing me is beyond frustrating. Ah well back to the story grind then!

You get brand about halfway through the main quests (early on in the second zone), and after that it's just straight Ability leveling, which is easy enough to do just by finishing side quests and collectibles.
Put a few more hours into this today and am working on the four Warchiefs. Was going after one with no bodyguards and en route had to pass through a Stronghold. To distract as many orcs as possible, I shot down some Caragor meat and two nests. I slipped through and faced the Warchief while everyone was distracted, dispatching him with relative ease. Cool, I thought. I picked some flowers and was walking away when suddenly, out of nowhere, the screen cut away to another Captain, up high in a room of the stronghold, getting mauled to death by the Caragor that I had released earlier and forgotten about. Had no idea that Captain was there. Two birds with one stone. Hilarious.
(Edit: I'm sure this and similar stories have been shared throughout the thread, but it was very cool to see. Gotta love dynamic systems.)

A weakness to mounted beast finishers is an awful thing to have near a bow challenge as a few captains have discovered.

I'm closing in on the end here. I've collected all the artifacts and the pieces of the image, freed all the slaves, and only have the final (bastard) weapon quests left. I've bought all the skills and have nothing left to sink points in. I have branded most of the captains and war chiefs. I'm putting it off, but I can see the end coming.
One of my more epic kills. I was going after a captain who was hiding deep inside a stronghold. After a lot of sneaking around, I found him standing on a bridge surrounded by bodyguards. The bodyguards were standing so close to him that I couldn't get a line on his head. He was vulnerable to ranged and fire. Across the bridge was a barrel of grog, though, so I went over there, poisoned the grog, went back into hiding and waited. Sure enough, all the bodybuards abandoned their captain and ran over to have a drink. While they were standing around puking up poisoned grog, I put arrow after arrow into the captain and finished by blowing up another barrel of grog, which set him on fire and flying off the bridge.
Just entered the second area, with almost exactly 24 hours played. That's cray. I only just got death threat. Either I a real slow sightseer, I suck at the game, or both.

Well, I finished it. I expected the final missions and the end to be...
...rubbish, but fuck me, that was awful. I imagine people who care about the lore actually felt pain over that. I hope they get a real writer for the sequel. Story missions aside, I enjoyed this so much and haven't played anything else since I got it. Well worth the money.

True. I mean, I'd say that as long as you get too the point where you can brand, stop the story for a while and wander. At that point you'll be in good position to enjoy all of the systems in place.
Though doing the hunting missions leads to some hilarity as well...

The ability the hunting missions unlock to let you quickly take over beasts has led to a whole mess of orcs and caragors just sitting around chilling at times. Being able to tame a pack like that totally changes how I react to caragors.
Similarly while I got a bit tired of having to revisit the same locations in the first map for slave uprising missions in the second map subsequent visits to the same stronghold can feel really different since I'll have more and more captains that hang out there under my command. Sometimes one goes down when an attempt at stealth fails and a big melee breaks out and that makes me a bit sad. But hey, new captain to hunt down and brand.
Wow the rewards for the weapon missions in the 2nd area are waaaaaay higher. I'm unlocking shit at a crazy rate. Although the missions themselves are a huge step up in terms of challenge.
My only major problem is that all of my runes are shitty shit shit. I'm focusing on death-threating guys for a bit. I could especially do with some health regen and better Elf-Shot regen stuff. Restoring focus is useless if I don't have ammo to use it with, and all my runes seem to regenerate focus ATM.

I really wish this game had some kind of new game mode that let you start at a blank slate and then gain plot powers via XP. I haven't had much fun since beating the game, as my guy is pretty much unstoppable. The trial mode is kind of cool, but the time limit kind of hampers it.
It would be great to replay it without having to do the story missions. Don't get me wrong, they were fun enough, but I don't really care enough to do them again.

This is why I think they could reuse and expand the basic game mechanics to make something awesome. The Nemesis system is basically tailor-made for a true open-world game. It doesn't even have to be about killing per se - you can just be manipulating events to develop other characters within the world.
So guys, outside of doing the slaver mission, I've just been going around picking artifacts and Ith, doing all the survivals until it said I need to do story missions, etc. Then I got to the area where Tugog is. Failed twice. because the timing when it tells you to hit A to dodge is a bit wonky. Now, I could just do the death from above onto him a few times and then finish him which is a bit cheesy, or is there a better way once I've actually unlocked other skills?
It's up to you. He unlocks rather early so he is much harder but unlocking some more skills (combo builder mostly) he becomes much easier.
I think the point is for him to summon guys and you use them to build up your combo so you can use your combat finisher enough times for him to die.
I was doing pretty well until a captain that was an archer with fire arrows showed up and made things more difficult than it should have been. I figure I can play until I unlock the other half of the world, -then- go murder him. I already have 2 ability points I can't use yet without advancing the story.

Just started playing this game. I'm curious: do all the captains and ranked uruks have unique names per play through, or are they all the same? I was getting the impression that when random orcs kill you they rank up and RNG spits out a funny name for them, but maybe I'm mistaken.

Aside from a few story-related ones, they all have random appearances, names, nicknames, personalities and attributes.
You'll start to see names repeated though (I have murdered so many Blorg's...)

Specific ones are there in every game, to advance the story bits. There are some repeats of names, occasionally, but those are more likely to be "resurrected" versions of past kills (orcs that you may not have "permanently" killed). But yeah, the vast majority of them are random.

Given that each name has voice work, it's a fair compromise for getting a warchief's name chanted when he comes out to fight so you get to feel like you knocked out the local favorite when you win.
During the "Brand the Warchiefs" mission, I wound up with one Warchief that was immune to everything, but afraid of caragors. And he had three captains guarding him that were also immune to everything, each with their own fear. It ended up feeling like an old kung fu movie where I had to track them each down individually and use the super secret technique to slay them.
I beat one Warchief by abusing arrows, sprinting around the base picking up more and then shooting him from above. I took him down that way, pretty tough to fight Combat Awareness guys head on since a billion other Uruks show up.
It's super satisfying to finally kill/brand these fuckers. Some of them killed me quite a bit. One guy, Tars, I killed him 5+ times but he always returned. I finally just branded the asshole since he was lvl 20 and always showed up at the worst fucking times...including the big battle near the end.

I learned quickly to lure captains and warchiefs out of strongholds if at all possible. And by learning I mean I was getting so injured by reinforcements that I ran out to harvest herbs and noticed a lot fewer enemies when the captain caught up with me.
I also learned that shadow strike on a fleeing captain makes a whole lot more sense than trying to run after him while all his followers continue to try to kill you along with every other uruk, ghul, and caragor you pass during the chase.

Played this for a few hours. It's fun, but damn it can be hard.
First real challenge was one of the sword missions, where I guess I am unavoidably surrounded by 20-30 guys, and their numbers never seem to diminish even though I execute a bunch of them. A few guys got promoted off me after I failed that a few times. Moved on to some other stuff.
I chased one captain halfway across the map after I dropped a bunch of bees on him, only to have him disappear in front of me.
Randomly encountered a ranged dude who dropped my health from full to blinking red with a single one of his attacks. Stubbornly kept fighting him, you can guess how that ended.
This game is really cool, but fighting the captains is no joke.
If you don't mind hunting down artifacts and runes they can help generate a bunch of miriam in order to buy those health upgrades that will start to make things easier.
Hmm I think I've run into my first vendetta that is impossible. Only weakness is fear of caragors and he's literally immune to everything else. No caragors even within bowshot while staying in the mission area

No orc is immune to to wraith flash or other orcs. Having to rely on wraith flash finishers if you can't brand orcs in combat is going to be a pain though.

Early on you really have to fight conservatively in my experience. I only took two swings at most before waiting to counter and relied on executions for the actual kills. Priority went to any ranged enemies.
Running away to find an herb was also common.
Captains got a lot easier as you unlock abilities with the one that reduces the requirement of 8 hits to 5 for finishers being a huge boost against any you can melee but many still will hurt if you're not careful.

At the same time, you get a different set of abilities through exp unlocks if you delay the story. And the story itself is pretty short.

It can happen during game but since I'm usually busy playing I probably did not see the pop ups.
The times I did it was just when I started up the game and it would show +100 xp Avenged by X.
Of course with less people playing/dying in order to be avenged it won't happen as much.
