I have had so many dreams where I have been murdered or killed; I've died just about every imaginable way, I think. I've also had a lot of dreams where the fate of the world revolved around me completing some complicated Gaiman-esque series of trials.

Both kinds of dreams are much rarer than they used to be, but they still happen.

And I've definitely had dreams about others that were so bad I had to call them up in the middle of the night and make sure it was a dream.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

I've heard of recurring dreams, but I don't think I've ever had a similar dream happen twice.

As I said before, my dreams are always gibberish.

Sometimes they're based on things that are very heavily on my mind, though. I've had video game dreams and other such things, but even then it's usually just a random assortment of things on my mind with other nonsense that doesn't make any sense.

I'll have what I think of as "series" dreams. Like, where I can tell they're happening in the same place, or it's a continuation of a dream that I'd had a few days (or months) before. Or I'll have a dream that's kind of a full plot contained to itself. (Generally not pleasant.) But never the same dream twice.

Mostly my subconscious likes to tell me I feel certain things in really over-the-top ways. Like, how I feel about the possibility of my mom having another kid.

When I dreamed about that, my mom was in labor with the new baby, and my siblings and I were all at the hospital with our dad, waiting. Suddenly, a fault line opened up under the hospital, splitting the building in two. Everybody had to evacuate, and we couldn't get to Mom because a Kraken had climbed out of the pool in the hospital's basement and was eating people.

So we left Mom and waited at the edge of a hillside overlooking the hospital. That's when a meteor came into view, hurtling toward the hospital. Clearly the apocalypse was upon us.

My dad turned to my siblings and me, and said, "See kids? I told you this would happen if Mom had another baby!"

    And then I woke up.

Oh yeah, my wife texted me yesterday while she was in class and she said, "Apparently last night I got up and put on clothes cause I thought someone was coming to sleep in our bed and I knew they wouldn't appreciate me being naked, therefore.... I woke up with clothes on, I'm still confused"

I had a dream that I was living with a guy friend of mine and I brought a girl home. The girl kept asking whether or not we wanted to invite my roommate to "join us" and my roommate and I were immediately like Noooope.

    Nope. Shut it down. Dealbreaker.

I still recall a dream I had years ago in which I met a person who was freaking awesome and I was utterly bonkers for. Then, when I woke up, there was almost the sense of loss that this person wasn't real. It really affected me for a couple of days after, which was kind of nuts.

I have dreamed being killed in interesting ways
Like having my throat cut, eaten by cats while still alive. reliving some of the combat where it was I that was killed, blown up, eaten by various monsters, swallowed by furniture, the moon falling ever so slowly into earth and how it blew up when it hit. and so many other violent ends I have dreamed.

O I remember one now the inky blackness of the ocean and the things that rose from it to eat me. Sharks, I don't even know what most of the things were. but I remember the one with the shark it rose from the inky part where the lights goes dim to black in the ocean ever so slowly and it was huge

I haven't properly remembered a dream in, gods, probably years. At one point I was really interested in learning lucid dreaming (still kinda am) and kept a dream diary. I can't find it at the moment, but I remembered that one of my favourite dreams was one where me and a friend were caught on the planet of the apes. In order to not get caught we dressed up as apes in women's clothing, and then we somehow ended up in a game of badminton doubles. We were blending in fine, until I got caught out because I didn't know the name of one of the local celebrities. Then we got chased around a bit, and I woke up.

Lucid dreaming really isn't all it's cracked up to be. The moment you try to assert direct control over the dream you're beginning the wakeup process as the conscious parts of your mind fire up. The trick in my experience is semi-lucid dreaming, where you can recognize it's a dream but you don't take direct control. My programs are like this, where by associating an effect with a trigger I don't need to consciously think about using it so long as I fulfill said trigger.

Oh! A dream thread! This was made for me!

So, here's a story: back in highschool Senior year, I wound up with 6 consecutive hours of faffing about in the office making sure the printer/copier had enough paper and running errands etc. because I had accidentally cleared damn near all my requirements by doing a lot of community college classes earlier. They didn't really need me in the office, so I had a lot of time. So, I had a lot of naps.

It was around this time that I started to dream lucidly every now and then. I began to work at it, and get down a method. It pretty much involved me sleeping in ways I didn't normally sleep so I'd be just a little more "aware" of my surroundings. In dreams, I would know I was dreaming by the lack of visible hands at the ends of my arms.

Things were pretty great for a while. I made cool things like a mask that blocked my sight so I could pretend I was elsewhere, and thereby teleport. I built castles, fought monsters, carved stars, lots of stuff. Pretty soon I couldn't even dream normally if I tried. But, things quickly started going off the rails when I discovered that despite being lucid, nightmares could and would happen. In my experience, they happened more often because I was lucid. And the thing about lucid nightmares is: they crystalize in your memory.

It's been almost 6 years since my first lucid nightmare. It began with me walking through a labyrinth of carved basalt. It appeared as if the walls were composed of flat triangles linked side-to-side, rising in uneven angular hills into my path. Despite the lack of a visible source, my vision was aided by a dim and pale light. After walking a ways, I spotted polygonal gaps in the ceiling through which a massive moon spied.

Before long I was at the mouth of the maze, looking out on a dusky savannah of grey grass swaying in a gentle breeze. It was then that I was torn away to another place.

Suddenly I was in a small room cramped by leather armchairs and the masked figures sitting in them. My eyes were locked forward at what appeared to be the figurehead of the group, a person in a baboon mask of some blue metal, but out the corners of my eyes I saw bird and dog masks of what looked like wood and some black tar. They did not speak to me. Instead, they spoke to each other in a spine-crawling tongue that consisted of grinding and clacking one's teeth. All I could glean were...what felt like impressions. I knew they were correct, but I couldn't say where they came from. They were parts of my mind, and no matter how autonomous they appeared, I could not lie to myself completely.

I was excited. Seeing them, hearing them, it's like I had made people that could think and feel on their own. I felt that each masked one represented some facet of my mind, and I was now able to directly see into it. It was fascinating. It was my downfall.

Their short, painful discourse was sewn with a sense of trepidation about my preparedness for something. They decided it didn't matter in the end. As one they stared intently at me, and I was back at the cave looking out on the grass.

There was something else now. A young man (older than me at the time) in full traditional golf garb playing mini-golf on a small green leading up to a windmill. He waved me over, and I joined. We played mini-golf for a while, discussing trivial shit like the weather. We spoke in a garbled tongue (the most common language I encounter) that sounded like babbling but conveyed meaning. He said he was my conscience, that he was here to guide me, but before he could say more he froze mid-putt and looked out into the grass.

There was a long moment where we stared into the grey sea, him stock still, myself in confusion. He turned abruptly, taking back his putter, and quickly claiming he had to go. All too soon the tiny course and conscience were gone.

I turned back to the grass. Unsure of what to do, and curious to what he saw. I willed a flashlight into my hand and cast it across the savannah. Searching, the inky clouds began to crowd the sky under increasing wind. I spied a glimmer caught in my light. The moon was shrouded. I caught the twinkle again, closer. As the last shreds of pale moonlight dimmed, an androgynous, emaciated figure of leathered skin rose from the grass about twenty feet away.

My full focus was upon it, light catching completely its horrible visage. A lipless grimace of needling teeth crowned with eyes that were nothing more than mirrors the size of quarters.

I yelped and it sprinted. All four of its spindly limbs gripped and pushed at the ground like the unbalanced pistons of a reckless and violent machine. Within a flash it was upon me, tearing, digging, eating. And I was powerless. And it hurt.

I woke up shaking and stunned, slapping on the light and searching the shadows. What I had done that night still haunts. I had allowed the preconception of agency to infect my dreams. I'd deluded myself into believing the actors had power. This concept is a poison. It reinforces itself with each iteration. Knowing its existence is small comfort. Even though you may deny the power of a nightmare logically as a lucid dreamer, some small part of you remains scared, and with that toe-hold it can still inflict...traumas...on you.

Damn! That got pretty long! Anyway, I'll post some other dreams later! :D

Nightmares don't scare me. It's not that I deny their power by logic, I deny their power because mine is stronger. If you try to stop a nightmare with logic when lucid dreaming, that's not gonna work because of that bit of self-doubt since you're aware and right in front of the thing. So I don't use logic, I just kick its ass with my programs. The programs are subconsciously ingrained into the triggers, so no nightmare can prevent me from using them, which means I can pull out my full power and curbstomp whatever decides to try ruining my dreams.

I just woke up from a dream that Storm lent me her magical wishing device, which was a small musical instrument, but had never worked for her since she couldn't play it very well. I start jamming out some really nice folk music on it, wish for a hundred bucks, look down and there's a hundred dollar bill sitting on my lap. I play more and keep wishing for more money until I had $938 million in cash, then passed the machine back to her.

Then I woke up all "NOOOOO!!!!!! MY MONEY WHYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!??????"

I had two weird dreams last night - one of which I would classify as a nightmare

The first one was a sex dream, and involved typical sexy things; namely, the having of sex by me and others. But there was one girl I remember who had a dude's entire head up there, if you catch my drift. And then, to everyone's amazement, the shoulders followed. That's all I remember about that one.

The second one involved a personal fear of mine and so I say it's a nightmare. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a fraidy cat, and I'm super scared of quite a few things. Bees, spiders, centipedes, scorpions, ants, jellyfish...basically anything that bites or stings. And also I'm terrified of moving water - like near a dam or a spillway or a drainage pipe or a waterfall. The thought of being unaware of something like that and crossing over some sort of underwater event horizon is so horrifying to me that I absolutely cannot and will not swim in natural water bodies. My last great fear is of electricity, and nothing makes my hackles rise like the vibrating hum of a substation. I've seen stories of arc flash happening in environments like that at distances of up to 13 feet.

So in my dream last night, where I found myself inside of a gigantic substation with no way out and no protective gear. Well...I'm just glad I didn't piss myself in my sleep.

I was a woman in it.

I had another one where I was a woman. I was the owner of some really cool club, and my bodyguard was the Robin Williams robot from Bicentennial Man.

I just had another one of my laying in bed, frantically trying to wake up because if I don't something will get me nightmares.

This time it seemed like I had woken up 3 or 5 times. Every time I'd start repeating my name, trying to convince myself to wake up, and someone else in the room would be saying it along with me. I rolled over, frantically attempting to turn on my bedside lamp and staring at the little red numbers on my alarm clock as minutes passed.

And then I remembered that I don't have a bedside alarm clock.

    Nice try, brain.

Now we're sitting here, exhausted and waiting until I've calmed down and can go back to bed with the lamp on, you dummo.

Yeah I don't think dreams happen often if you aren't getting enough sleep.

I only really dream during really restful sleep.

Those are the only times I remember having them, at least.

    I usually have nightmares

these days though it's not all that bad since I usually realize they're nightmares pretty early on, which generally puts a ceiling on the overall unpleasantness

but I still don't have any control

even knowing that it's me fabricating the whole goings-on everything I try to do has that bullshit running in place futility and then my like subconscious or whatever just metaphorically rolls its/my eyes crosses its/my arms and waits for me/it to stop struggling, at which point the action resumes

and if I continue to misbehave I am kicked into wakefulness for a few minutes as a "time out" before being allowed back into sleep, though sometimes I at least get to have a different nightmare

this can happen several times a night

still though dull irritation is a vast improvement over actual fear

I just overflowed like two entire gallons of toilet water onto my bathroom floor.

We own three towels and no plunger. It is 1:30AM and all I can do is try to soak up the water and wring out the towels so they don't mildew and wash them in the morning.

I sure wish I could wake up from this.

Do you have a bathroom sink or laundry sink big enough to soak the towels in? Or buckets? Just until you can wash them.

    That really sucks. I'm sorry.

You can turn off the water to the toilet to prevent additional flooding. There should be a knob of some kind at the base of the toilet for that purpose. You might be able to unclog the toilet by dumping some bleach in it and waiting for a few hours.
