The Sims 4 is a game you can buy on EA's Origin platform (and probably a physical store but who even goes to those anymore) for your PC and Macintosh.
But what is the Sims, you ask? Have you been living under a rock for the past ~14 years? The Sims is a life (read: death) simulation game from Maxis, the creators of SimCity. In the Sims, you create a Sim (or a family of them) and then build them (or move them into a pre-built if you're lame) a house, get them a job, keep them happy, and try not to (but eventually do) kill them or let them die.
EA has gotten into the habit of releasing these games right at the start of school semesters (February for Sims 1 and 3, and September for Sims 2 and now 4), ensuring that everyone (that plays them) has that much of more difficulty not-procrasting.
So what's new in Sims 4, you ask? The tag line for Sims 4 is Smarter Sims, Weirder Stories. And now I will quote directly from the Sims Wikia:
Features
Smarter Sims – Create and control smarter Sims with unique appearances, personalities, and emotions in The Sims 4.
Create unique Sims and customize their appearance, fashion styles, personality traits, skills, careers, and walk styles. For the first time, Sims both feel and express emotions. Your Sims experience a range of emotional states driven by your actions and influenced by other Sims, events, and objects within the game. Emotions offer you more choices and give you the opportunity to create gameplay moments with even more possibilities. Enjoy how your Sims interact and express their distinct personalities in social settings within the game.
Create and control the mind, body, and heart of your Sims and bring your stories to life like never before in The Sims 4.
Powerful, Creative Tools – Create A Sim and Build Mode are more powerful, intuitive, and fun than ever before. You have the control to sculpt Sims with tactile precision. Effortlessly construct the home of your dreams with the all new, room-based Build Mode.
Vibrant Neighborhoods – Experience new gameplay opportunities brought to life within vibrant and dynamic neighborhoods. Choose among beautiful and diverse lots for your Sims to build their homes and explore activities. Expand your social circle and interact with other Sims in the neighborhood and hang out in community parks and venues.
Rich Rewards – Earn new objects, outfits, and traits by completing events, discovering collectables, and unlocking achievements.
Share Your Creations – The Gallery allows you to browse, share, and download new content without ever leaving your game. Get inspired by rich content created by The Sims community and add new experiences to your game.
Oh, and guess what? The game is available now! So go get it!

No, EA was not sending out review copies last I read, so I should probably note that its possible this game is godawful. But, it is still a Sims game, and I do derive enjoyment from them, so I'm getting it.
I can't really speak to that list of "missing" features because like I said I don't remember the older games much. Probably good to wait for reviews just as a general principal when it comes to all games, but I quite like this one so far.
I also can't speak to any things added by Sims 3 expansions that are missing.
But since it is a Sims game there is gonna be a kind of criminal amount of paid DLC. So the idea that they held out a bunch of stuff to sell to you later kind of makes me sad
this was not a very useful post
So many hats.
That, uh
That's not exactly a new feature.
I can sit at a table and eat and have a conversation and watch the television over there at the same time. Or I can sit and chat with my date and order chips from the bartender without breaking the conversation or losing my seat at the table. Jogging on a treadmill and chatting with the sim in the treadmill right next to it. Etc, etc.
From what I've been seeing is that its more of a sequel to Sims 2 than it is a sequel to Sims 3 and that people who are into the features of Sims 3 might be less interested in it.

I also had this feeling back when the Sims 3 came out. I'll wait and see.
Yeah, it, uh....

It doesn't look promising.
DLC winds up with this whole "micro-transaction" conversation, where from what I can tell, the Sims franchise hits pretty hard on the traditional Expansion Pack model as well.
Doesn't quite excuse the fact that we are now on the fourth iteration of the franchise and they still hold back on innovations introduced in the first iteration.
Wow. Yeah those are some major steps back. I was interested in stuff like multi-tasking and the new home editing tools, but no way I want to go back to loading screens between lots. And I don't know whats going on with them cutting out basic careers like law enforcement and medicine. No support for 64 bit systems or more then 4 gigs of ram is also pretty unfortunate, but that was pretty much expected after the way they handled SimCity.

To be fair, there are the big things, create a style and open world that are missing
So far the lack of either doesn't seem to really bother her that much, but I don't want to just speak for her :P
(It does need more hair colors though)
hahahah
Pretty much every acknowledged change is excused away with "not that big a deal".
Fuck this kid. I decide if it's a big deal or not.
Well, it is an opinion piece, not an attempt at perfect objectivity. I suppose it's a matter of taste, I found myself agreeing quite a lot, for me very few of the missing features will matter at all.

I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS GAME YOU GUYSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!
Always wait for reviews. The only reason I bought it is because i'm a dummy who had a voucher and wanted to treat myself because of a shitty few months.
Put a couple more hours in last night. Still really enjoying myself. I like how dates are a mini version of the quest system from Medieval. You go to the venue, get a list of socialization goals, and get ranked bronze, silver, gold based on how the date goes then get a reward afterwards.
