Technological historians, be sure to get a good look at all the fax machines. They used to be a big thing before the Internet came along.

    Crossposting from D&D :

Hinton's annual "Recruitng Matters" piece is up, and is once again required reading.

Taking this out just for you, ebum:
Note that, since 2003, the eleven teams in the "five-star" group have combined for 21 appearances in the BCS Championship game, compared to one appearance by any of the 64 teams listed below. (The lone exception in that span, Oregon, just barely missed the cut for five-star status.) The only "five-star" teams that never played for a title in the BCS era are Georgia and Michigan; among the rest, only Notre Dame failed to make a repeat trip.

We're well aware. We should have in '99 and '03, but various elements of Lloyd Carr's philosophy failed us (running too much in '99 and being ahead of the spread punt curve without really figuring out how to do it without getting kicks blocked in '03).

Also '06, when he failed to politic like Meyer did. Still think we beat that Florida team, even though we had no shot with USC. Wheeeeee matchups!

And to be fair, we did win the title the year before the BCS started.

The rules committee recommended a rules change that would effectively ban the hurry-up offense
The committee also recommended a rules change that will allow defensive units to substitute within the first 10 seconds of the 40-second play clock, with the exception of the final two minutes of each half, starting with the 2014 season.

“This rules change is being made to enhance student-athlete safety by guaranteeing a small window for both teams to substitute,” said Calhoun. “As the average number of plays per game has increased, this issue has been discussed with greater frequency by the committee in recent years and we felt like it was time to act in the interests of protecting our student-athletes.”

Under this rule proposal, the offense will not be allowed to snap the ball until the play clock reaches 29 seconds or less. If the offense snaps the ball before the play clock reaches 29 seconds, a 5-yard, delay-of-game penalty will be assessed. Under current rules, defensive players are not guaranteed an opportunity to substitute unless the offense substitutes first. This part of the rule will remain in place in scenarios where the play clock starts at 25 seconds.

We have an early leader in the "Stupidest and Most Insensitive Comment of the Offseason" Category. Bret Beilema, come on down!

For those who don't know, Cal walk-on Ted Agu died suddenly during a conditioning run earlier this month, and now Beilema is trying to use that as proof that hurry-up offenses are dangerous. So yeah, way to go Bret.

    Today in college football news:

The National Labor Relations Board announced its ruling in support of Northwestern players attempting to form a union and bargain with the school and NCAA for more rights. This is a huge step in the continuing "The NCAA is pretty much the worst" saga that has played out over the last two years.

You can read a summary of the union's goals here, and a summary of the ruling here.

More details about the Jameis Winston situation where he was accused of rape

TL;DR it looks most likely that he did it, 2 teammates who witnessed it are getting in trouble (one of them for recording it) and could face expulsion, yet because of the police bungling the investigation and this being the first time the university even looked into the matter (because football's more important than a woman's safety), the guy who did it but is good at football may face a university hearing and at the absolute worst case could have athletic eligibility and class attendance affected. Shameful.

    ed:
The federal government has opened an investigation of Florida State University's handling of the sexual assault allegation against Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston, FOX Sports has learned.

And that investigation will also look back at all sexual assault cases involving Florida State students in the past three years.

The question: Whether school administrators complied with their responsibilities under the federal gender-equity law known as Title IX.

And Mississippi State shows a strong start in the Fulmer Cup:
Current MSU defensive lineman and rising sophomore Jordan Washington was arrested Wednesday afternoon for suspicion of residential burglary charges and robbery by threats, according to the Starkville Daily News.

“We are aware of the situation. Jordan Washington has been suspended indefinitely from our team pending further investigation,” Dan Mullen said in a statement.

As a redshirt freshman in 2013, Washington didn’t play.

Arrested alongside Washington was former offensive lineman Charles Siddoway on the same charges. Siddoway started all 26 games in his two-year career and is an NFL Draft hopeful.
