    Notre Dame at 17?

    That's...reasonable.

But the best part of the preseason polls is seeing how overrated ND is.

Thanks for ruining my fun, coaches.

ND was unranked in the preseason two years ago when they went to the NCG. They haven't been overrated preseason since the Brady Quinn years.

I remember when Rich Rodriguez did that with winged helmets. It went well!

Yes, but truth and facts should never interfere with the fun, wholesome activity of hating on ND.

    Verdict is in: O'Bannon won.

    Let the appeals begin!

    "The Judge's 99-page opinion"

I don't have the time to break all that down myself, so I'll be waiting for the news sites to piece it out.

  • NiryaNirya Registered User regular
I'm on my phone but SBNation already did a quick breakdown.

Basically, O'Bannon "won" but there are a good amount of restrictions placed. Still, the NCAA will more than certainly appeal.

Short version: NCAA was illegally using players' names, likeness, etc. for commercial uses and was doing so in a way that violated antitrust law. Therefore they have to compensate players for such things. This can take the place of a trust which the players will receive after they graduate or their eligibility expires, whichever comes first. Total is cost of attendance + 5k. Won't take effect until the next cycle of football/basketball recruiting aka anyone who enrolls after July 1, 2016.

I think that's the major bits.

Cost of tuition meaning on top of their scholarship, right?

  • enlightenedbumenlightenedbum Registered User regular
    edited August 2014
I'm not clear on that point. I also think that's a floor not a cap.

EDIT: The gist is that the judge was like "legally you've been very very naughty, as far as punishment though, give a small amount of money you were going to give anyway (that's what the autonomy vote was about Thursday) to the players"

Right now the scholarships aren't covering the full cost of tuition. The ruling is seeking to increase the scholarship amounts in order to give the players that full cost, plus more for things like food and housing.

Also the $5k is a ceiling. The NCAA can't do anything for any payments below that threshold.

This comes along at the same time that the NCAA grants the "power 5" conferences more autonomy. So, yeah.

And when they went to the NCG they played like an unranked team!

A foursome of Notre Dame veterans was not seen leaving the Irish practice field Friday afternoon. Cornerback KeiVarae Russell, defensive end Ishaq Williams, linebacker Kendall Moore and wide receiver DaVaris Daniels were not among the players who exited the LaBar Practice Field Friday.

Academic fraud issue (in the general student population, supposedly), Fox Sports is saying all four have been dismissed from the team.

There is a rumor that this dates back to 2012 and ND is planning on vacating all 12 wins from that season, but that is purely conjecture at this point.

EDIT: South Bend Tribute has a source saying it's comparable to UNC.

The AP has released their preseason rankings, for what it's worth.
Shamelessly ripped off some AP site.
    Rank School Points
    1 Florida State (57) 1,496
    2 Alabama (1) 1,361
    3 Oregon (1) 1,334
    4 Oklahoma (1) 1,324
    5 Ohio State 1,207
    6 Auburn 1,198
    7 UCLA 1,106
    8 Michigan State 1,080
    9 South Carolina 1,015
    10 Baylor 966
    11 Stanford 885
    12 Georgia 843
    13 LSU 776
    14 Wisconsin 637
    15 USC 626
    16 Clemson 536
    17 Notre Dame 445
    18 Mississippi 424
    19 Arizona State 357
    20 Kansas State 242
    21 Texas A&M 238
    22 Nebraska 226
    23 North Carolina 194
    24 Missouri 134
    25 Washington 130
    Others receiving votes: UCF 94, Florida 87, Texas 86, Duke 71, Iowa 68, Louisville 48, Marshall 41, Oklahoma State 37, Virginia Tech 26, TCU 23, Mississippi State 22, Michigan 19, Texas Tech 19, Miami (FL) 16, Cincinnati 15, Boise State 10, Oregon State 10, Northwestern 8, BYU 8, Penn State 5, Vanderbilt 2, Navy 2, Nevada 1, Louisiana-Lafayette 1, Utah State 1

Does it mean anything in the long run other than bragging rights? Will the new playoff committee be swayed by the AP or the coaches poll? Is Baylor really the 2nd best team in the Big 12? Should Duke really be ranked above Michigan? These and more answers once the season begins!

One major thing I see in the poll...I think James Franklin is underestimated and Penn State will be ranked by the time the season ends. The rest? Pretty good, give or take 4 spots.

Yes, probably. Until the offensive line proves otherwise. The defensive line beat it soundly in an open scrimmage last night.

Prediction: I think UCF will crack the Top 25 this year, but I'd be surprised if they made it above 20. They'll probably hover around 24/25, especially if they go on a run and win a few games in a row (which is entirely possible). The last month will probably be pretty tough for them though (all the long-time rivals), so I'm not expecting a second AAC Championship.

Can I get a show of hands on how many people would participate in a contest like I did last year again?

Also, should I cross post the contest to the D&D thread to get more participants or just leave it here?

There's a yahoo college football pickem if you want to use something and not have to work your ass off again.

As far as I can tell you can't do a custom list, but you can choose to do the AP top 25 each week which is about 15 to 20 games each week. Just a thought.

  • LanglyLangly Registered User regular
There's also an option to take the "most interesting games of the week" which yahoo sports editors decide.

  • SyphyreSyphyre A Dangerous Pastime Registered User regular
Meh, it's really not that much time each week. Doing it in the thread itself gives a few advantages:
    1. I get to pick the games I want, and get to define how I want the contest to work.
    2. Everyone gets to see everyone else's vote, and makes it a bit more personal.
    3. A lot more people play when you go "Oh hey it's here in the thread let me pick" instead of "Oh I guess I need to log into Yahoo."

  • SyphyreSyphyre A Dangerous Pastime Registered User regular
That said, I do want to make sure more than 5 people wanna play.

I really have to gather all of those for the OP at some point. We used to do a Yahoo picks thing, but didn't last year. I preferred the one Syphyre ran in this thread when I joined last year.
