Joan Rivers passes away at 81.
NBC News Coverage:
Joan Rivers, a pioneering female stand-up comic and the queen of "Can We Talk?" gossip, has died. She was 81, her daughter, Melissa Rivers, said Thursday.
Rivers was undergoing surgery on her vocal cords at a clinic in New York City on Aug. 28 when she stopped breathing and had to be transported to Mount Sinai Hospital. Melissa Rivers and her 13-year-old grandson, Cooper, who lived with her in Malibu, California, rushed to her bedside.
"My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh," Melissa Rivers said in a statement. "Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."
Raspy-voiced and brassy, Rivers was always self-deprecating, foul-mouthed and politically incorrect. A master of reinvention, she endured in show business because of her tenacious work ethic — which she credited to her "immigrant mentality."
Comedians typically push the edge of the envelope, but Rivers proved time and again that she didn't even see the envelope. To her fans, she was as shocking as she was endearing.
"The way she is funny, she tells the truth according to herself," the late film critic Roger Ebert wrote in 2010. "She hates some people. She has political opinions. Her observations are so merciless and her timing so precise that even if you like that person, you laugh. She is a sadist of comedy, unafraid to be cruel — even too cruel."

She was transferred out of ICU, but her family/reps/doctors didn't state if it was simply because she was no longer receiving active care there or because she was improving.
Last week
Ugh
Condolences to her daughter and family.
It always stuck with me, even if it was a silly little thing.
This stinks, and I am sad now.
rough year for funny people.
RIP Joan, I may not always enjoy your comedy, but you pushed the limit for female comedians and I hella respect that.
This was my first thought as well.
Nothing better happen to Charles Grodin, I swear.
Hoskins
I knew I was forgetting someone.
Watch A Piece Of Work. She pulled off some amazing stuff for a woman in her line of work at the time she did.
"jogging"
a lot of people were inspired and built careers off her style
wanted to high five and hug her after she walked off that CNN segment it was amazing
RIP
i dunno, i think the reporter was on point. joan rivers said some pretty shitty stuff. last month she called the first lady a "tranny" and that Obama was a closeted gay man
Some pretty bad comments on Gaza from her too
No. That "reporter" was an idiot trying to stir up drama. Rivers has said some AMAZINGLY shitty stuff but you don't surprise attack her over and over with that in an interview about her new book.
Rivers was a very important female comic and did a lot to break down barriers in the industry
But her entire gossip career of the last decade(s) was full of her saying horrible horrible shit all the time
While I am all for honoring her legacy it is a little gross to just gloss over that stuff
Don't get me wrong, I'm not celebrating her life and condolences to her and her fans, but this death doesn't strike me the way Williams did.
i mean in the book she insults casey anthony and princess dianna, i think it's pretty ok to ask her about that. in a news interview, for news, about her book. unless cnn is just there to market her book for her
is anderson cooper a "reporter"
Anderson Cooper is a dreamboat
The Silver Fox
If she wants to be a reporter she can stop being so unprofessional then.
That's pretty much what those interviews are for, yes. Turning them into an ambush calling out is bullshit.
But I will agree that I did not much like her career this past 10 years.
hey satan...: thinkgeek amazon My post |
She asked Rivers if she cares about hurting feelings, Rivers said rich stars don't care, she asked if she had any limits after her jokes about Casey Anthony and Princess Diana (as well as the dozens of other insults Rivers makes about celebrities bodies that aren't "just the dress" that weren't mentioned) and she presses the issue
That's what a reporter does
She wasn't content to just let it be a softball HEY PLUG YOUR BOOK
If anything it was very professional
That's really dumb
it's like bizzaro world
But if you, like someone who's a friend on fb posts an article of her death with the caption
Some fucker's getting unfriended.
you can not like her all you want, but be respectful (which I think the people in this thread have been so far?
I can respect that. I don't agree with everything she said, especially as she got older, but I won't vilify her for it. It's just the type of comedian she was.
but I always enjoy people who are naturally funny and willing to share their gift
it is a shame how crazy her material got at the end
I guess I just never paid much attention.
She did some great shit and she did some terrible shit. Just like probably everyone else.
Yeah, but it would have been Joan Rivers that made the joke.
Some random fucker on the internet lacks the chops to pull it of.
Personally I didn't really know Rivers or her comedy, but she seemed to inspire a lot of comediennes to join the biz and the world needs more of them. The stereotype of schlumpy guy with the hot wife/GF, where she is the scolding straight character in the relationship has to die in a fire and the over abundance of male stand up comics is the cause IMO.
I think it's got more to do with every sitcom like that just being a remake of The Honeymooners
