In the short term, maybe, but in the grand scheme of things, eh. We've known 4chan are shitters forever; proof of it is like taking down LulzSec; there'll be plenty more to take their place.
It delegitamizes the whole thing, making it much less likely for gullible people to think this is about anything other than harassment. It blows away the smokescreen people have been hiding behind and might make people listen when they're told that asking for better out of journalists is fine, but this movement isn't about that.
Which might lead to a legitimate movement asking for more transparency in journalism that isn't out to get anyone who support women in the industry.
I can't see him as an actual victim of emotional abuse anymore, after both his deleted tweet and the chat logs
like even if nothing in the logs is particularly damning on its own, he's still hanging around with those assholes, helping them harass people
The thing is that this is kinda classic emotional abuse. Victims often end up going totally overboard because of how awful they feel.
I don't think him posting the stuff he did was good, although having read it, it was really not a good situation for Zoe to have put him in. On one level, warning people of the fact that someone is a cheat is something that's worthwhile, but it's impossible to disentangle that from it also being his assault on her as a game developer and on her values.
Like putting on your personal blog that you ex cheated on you repeatedly is not outside the realm of what a blog is for. Relationship meltdown posts are kinda notorious on both facebook and other social networking sites.
If he used 4chan to amplify that blog's exposure though, he's culpable of a great deal of stupidity and greater emotional damage than anything Quinn ever did to him.
Can not disagree enough with the bolded, being cheated on sucks, it doesn't mean you get to go around branding someone with a scarlet A.

Why not? Is it not in the close (not general public, i.e. the entire world, but the people around you) public interest if someone is a rapist, sexual harasser, abusive, or cheating on you (and putting you in danger of getting STDs in doing so)?
There was a discussion a few weeks back about a webcomics artist who sent dick pics to women who did not want his dick pics, and it was mentioned several times that a lot of women in the webcomics business had told each other about that and were aware of it. That seems like a good thing for them to be aware of, when true. So why not here?

Because listing things beside each other obviously implies they're of the same value.
I certainly don't approve of death threats, but there's a difference between "You said something shitty and are a dipshit." And "Hi, popping in randomly to call you a dipshit!"
As an example here's one guys special messages to Anita. It is on an entirely different level. And from the sound of it they've found new levels beyond that if they're hitting people with child pornography now.
Just linking it, because warning, it is fucked up.

That is the implication, yes. That is why people think that is what you are implying.
I was trying to imply that gross improprieties in relationships shouldn't have some special privilege of not being talked about. In each of these cases, I see there as being good reason for the people around the victim to be aware that this happened.
Cheating can be many things. It can be a sign there's some form of co-dependancy issues in the relationship. It can be a sign that someone isn't happy sexually, but is afraid of losing the emotional part of the relationship. It can be a sign that someone feels trapped because of guilt, but goes elsewhere. It can be a sign that someone is amoral when it comes to their relationships and don't mind hurting their partner. It can be a sign that monogamous relationships aren't for someone and they just haven't figured that out yet. It can be a sign that someone is prone to make mistakes and is rather impulsive. It can be a sign that someone has a sex addiction and deals with that in unhealthy ways.
It is something that is a very personal thing that effects only those in that relationship, and it's not a given that in another relationship that person would take the same actions. It is a betrayal of trust, but only with the person involved.
And it is not in any way shape or form ok to air your relationship's dirty laundry because of something that says the relationship was broken in some capacity. It is not the same thing as being abusive. It CAN be abusive, but it can also be caused by abuse in the relationship.
What he did was in no way shape or form acceptable. He did not and does not own her. He should not be trying to control her after their relationship is over. That is not in any way justifiable in any situation. Their private lives were not his to share with the world over being cheated on.

If Gjoni told people in his immediate social circle what had happened, privately (actually attempting to inform people who had any chance whatsoever of being affected by Quinn's interpersonal behavior), the situation would be drastically different. I understand completely if you tell people about this situation (if only because you don't want to show up at a party and your ex is there and you ruin each others' night and that of several bystanders).
That's not similar to purposefully exposing an already-harassed online personality to more harassment (and then literally conspiring with the harassers).

I have been reading a very long, but fantastic article on this thing and like many others, this was a guy who tried to engage with folks on the Hashtag. One point he brings up is so good:
@BionicFireman identified this concern, which he described as “a perception ‘Social Justice Warriors’ are bullying game developers into changing games unfairly” (seemingly aware that this is rather absurd), but it also appears to be what these images are about, which show various instances of changes made to games after players complained about sexist or racist imagery.
What’s mainly interesting to me about this is how different the narrative around such changes sounds depending on whether or not you agree with them. People politely asking developers to make slight changes to their game so that they can play it without feeling alienated is tampering with the artistic vision of developers, but when gamers screamed and shouted at Bioware for weeks what a crime against humanity the ending of Mass Effect 3 was, and they eventually tweaked it, it was an example of developers listening to feedback and responding to the concerns of their fans.
It’s a fascinating bit of doublethink, really. Players asking to be treated respectfully is bullying developers, but actual bullying of developers is about wanting to be treated respectfully. Changes you don’t like are damaging games, while changes you want are fixing them. Remember when Treyarch changed some weapons in Black Ops II ever so slightly and people lost their shit? Who was defending their artistic vision? Or the original vision EA had for the new Sim City? That Microsoft had for the Xbox One?
This has never been, on any level, about wanting to protect the artistic freedom of developers. It’s about people you don’t agree with trying to be heard, and them having an impact on a medium over which you’d like to claim full authority.
There is way more than this very salient point about how best to accomplish things. Incidentally, it's well worth going through the link about changes to games about sexist/racist aspects in there. It exposes a really weird kind of mindset when the things highlighted to be changed are seen to be heavy negatives, like reducing ridiculously oversized breasts or suggesting that we include black people. Suggesting it.

the problem is that it's also extremely easy and not illegal to publicize the contents of a blog, so believing that a free-access resource on the internet could practically only serve "people around the victim" is ludicrous. Encryption is not socially ubiquitous and therefore everything you put out on the internet, you put out on the world. Blogs are no different from facebook pages to website articles to twitter.

Yes, but do you realize how terrifying what you just wrote sounds given what has happened? Any woman in the games industry now has to wonder if they'll ever have a relationship with a jilted ex who decides to post a bunch of allegations against them - however serious - that turns into a sustained internet harassment campaign against them and their career.
Is that really what you think should be another worry women have in the games industry?
Because I can tell you know, if you replace the genitals around in this situation I can guarantee you there isn't the same risk to a man.

I know it's easy to say things like Devil's Advocate or Trolling, but the reality is that people disagree with you. If there weren't people that disagreed with you, there would be no point having this topic open; it could just be a sticky of the OP with Agrees from each of you, maybe?

See but one of these things is not like the other. Sesame Street taught us how to play this game.
Cheating is a gross impropriety in a relationship. The other things cause extensive physical, emotional, and psychological damage that reach far beyond what you are talking about with a breach of trust in a romantic relationship. They are not "gross improprieties." They are horrible, damaging crimes.
I don't know exactly what you are trying to do here with all of this and it's pretty off-topic anyway, but never say anything like this again.

I haven't looked into the log files myself, but word on twitter seems to indicate that they make everyone involved seem worse than any of Quinn's tweets did.
I don't think you can make yourself look any worse than saying you joined an IRC for 4channers.
Hitler himself would refuse to admit something like that publicly.
I once joined several IRC channels for 4channers. I don't remember all of the ones I joined, /b/ and /v/ for sure, but for the most part they weren't that bad. Better than the actual website, though that isn't saying much.

Zoe Quinn was always a scooby doo protagonist and we were all blind to it.
Writing on a blog that someone cheated on you, that you feel incredibly hurt, and that they're a bad person, even naming them, I can get even if I don't necessarily agree. It's harmful but with this kind of thing you're not always thinking about the consequences and you need to vent about how damaging and hurtful it was.
He wrote it as a story in multiple acts with jokey titles and continued to defend his actions despite the constant harassment she was getting before and especially after.

To me, it's about whether you consider him to have outed a cheater or outed an abuser
Outing an abuser shouldn't be policed, even if the outing puts the abuser in a negative situation. the victim has a right to talk about it with whoever they need to.
I don't think it matters if it's emotional or sexual abuse either. Gaslighting is a fucking vicious thing to do to a person who loves you. It's even worse for the victim when the abuser is a well-known Good Person who happens to be a skilled manipulator
but I really can't believe Eron Gjoni's true goal was to out his abuser anymore. I think he just wanted to drag her reputation through the mud.

I once joined several IRC channels for 4channers. I don't remember all of the ones I joined, /b/ and /v/ for sure, but for the most part they weren't that bad. Better than the actual website, though that isn't saying much.

What?
As Charlie Brooker looks at it, Twitter is the Videogame that changed the world
I play devil's advocate all the time, it's one of my things, I wouldn't consider it as quite so dismissive as something like 'trolling' myself, and I do actually sincerely apologise if that's how I came across.
It's really valuable a lot of the time, as a person, to be able to do that, but I've also had to figure out over time when it is not an appropriate thing to do.
This is one of those times, but it looks like you might be keying into that already, so sorry if I seemed to be hammering you.

"OLD MAN MISOGYNY???"
"And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling Quinns!"
He wrote it as a story in multiple acts with jokey titles and continued to defend his actions despite the constant harassment she was getting before and especially after.

People kill each other over adultery. Ridiculous. You'd think this would be one of those Hollywood caricatures of the human condition, but here we are with our stupid faces
