So finally unlocked some more tanks and got the whole T-34 1940-42 tanks set in my lineup. Run into AB last night just for fun and played probably 15 matches or so. Never did I have fewer than 10 kills and at least 5 assists and many times I had 18+ kills in these things.
By no means am I a great tanker...but good lord these things club everything in their BR except the occasional KV-1 that pops up which I need to maneuver around or just kill when I get my bomber. I know people have talked about this, but it was amazing to see it first hand. I was raking in at least 30k SL every match.
On a scale of 7 to 10*, how guilty should I feel about the amount of fun I've been having in low orbit with the B7A2 in AB ground strike matches lately?
It's kind of funny watching the AB trend of laser-focusing on bombers turn into four or five players on a team spending the entire match at 6000+ meters, trying to chase a single bomber that can generally outclimb/outrun them. Halfway through I wasn't even in a position to hit targets, just avoiding the seagull derpchain - which still rendered a third of the other team completely ineffective and caused my own side to outnumber them anywhere below five kilometers' altitude.
* I am fully aware that there's a certain minimum required level of guilt involved here.
Meanwhile, some guys over at the WT forums (I know I know) seems to have worked out how the boost rewards actually work - they only apply to the base reward value for player kills and not victory rewards, premium bonuses, or plane bonuses, meaning the multiplier only actually applies to a small fraction or RP/SL gains for a mission.
Definitely explains why I'd have a good T4 realistic battle on a 200% boost yesterday and only get a couple hundred RP more than usual for it.
All the more reason I'm glad I've found out T2/3 is my sweet spot as far as fun goes, since the whole "couple hundred matches per jet" grind would be a bit annoying.

I found out the +10% to allies bonus seems to additively stack (instead of doing the weird diminishing returns stack). Still stacking on paltry returns, but new information nonetheless.
I didn't think there was a bonus for victory (other than the 2x for the first one). With my premium from when it was super cheap for a year, I can get 10,000 with a 30% booster if a long domination game. Or closer to 6,000 in a more normal game with 4-5 kills.
This is in contrast to the 7,000 + I'd normally get for even a terrible 2x game or the 16,000+ I could get if I manage to do well and get 2x. It's definitely not better with the new system, but it's not absolutely terrible unless you want to spend a whole day playing.
We’re are steadily climbing towards our goal of 400 000 followers on our War Thunder Facebook page, but we are not quite there yet. For reaching that milestone, we promised you the War Thunder Mastermind Quiz, in which you will be able to prove your knowledge about your favourite game and earn rare premium vehicles as well!
We know that a great many of you are eagerly awaiting the chance to get their hands on the quiz (and the vehicles, of course!), so we decided to cut the wait short and make both the quiz and ingame special available to you immediately! We’re are sure to reach the number soon anyway, so there is really no reason to keep you waiting any longer!
Don’t forget: Facebook is integrated into War Thunder, and by connecting your Facebook account to the game you can easily share battle results and other achievements with your friends, or send invites to people on your friend list you think might fancy a ride in an aircraft or tank.
So, join us this weekend on our official War Thunder Facebook page, prove your knowledge in the Mastermind Quiz, activate the code, and then head in to the game to complete the easy to do special for your vehicles!
The “Quiz” special will be active from 07.00 GMT on February 28th until 07.00 GMT on March 2nd.
You’ll receive a special reward for the third, fifth and seventh victory over the period!
3 of 7 victories:
Get 50.000 !
5 of 7 victories:
Get one: He 112B-2, DB-7 or LaGG-3-23!
7 of 7 victories:
Get one: He 112B-2, DB-7 or LaGG-3-23!
In total, over the whole period, you can earn 50.000 and two premium aircraft! The chances of receiving any of these aircraft is equal; if you already own one, you’ll get another one of the three. Unfortunately, a comparable pay-out in Golden Eagles is not possible.
If you are on PlayStation 4, we haven't forgotten you! Sadly, for technical reasons, you are currently not able to activate your Mastermind code after successfully participating in the quiz. You can still complete the tasks of the special, and will be able to activate your code at a later point in time. Thank you for understanding!
How it works:
- Access the War Thunder Facebook page and click on ‘Participate’
- The Mastermind Quiz will ask you 10 random questions. Answer 7 of them correctly and get a special key code!
- Redeem the code on the official website here (make sure to log in with your game account!)
- You’re now able to do complete the special! Check your profile to find out more about the requirements to unlock the vehicles

I must be doing something wrong...unless I gotta go higher up the Sherman train as I'm not having nearly as much luck with the first 3 Shermans as I have with those T-34s.
I just feel like I can sit there and go toe to toe with almost anything except the KV's in this BR in the T-34s but not the Shermans.
I still have the early Shermans. I might just be getting wickedly lucky or just click really well with the US tanks cause save for the reserve tank, I've been doing pretty well with them.

They seem to have some battles where I'm just sitting and soaking up damage, and then some rounds it's a one hit kill from the same angle

Spacefire HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Spacefires are hilarious. I'm usually above all the bombers by a kilometer or so by the time the two sides collide.
On an unrelated note, I need to put on a brave face and pull apart my GPU fans. Its doing this (Not my video). And from what I'm reading, these fans aren't easy to pop off.
Its original intention is to stop people from dropping out of matches early and re-queuing. But then you get dumb bullshit that can happen in RB/Sim that locks you out.

That is oddly rhythmic. Are the things you're reading say it goes away with a replacement fan or that it's a loose wire or something?

Hey everyone, I am really, really new to War Thunder but so far I am digging it. I had some newbie questions that I am sure I could find the answer to but since you are probably more inclined to give me straight answers I figured I'd try here. I apologize if these are frequently asked (and for the length of the post).
1. So, if I understand this right: research is sort of the "rank up/levels" you can earn in this game, right? To put it in the parlance of the times, it's sort of like leveling the weapons worked in MW2 then?
2. Once I research a vehicle, it basically has "one life." So in arcade battles if it gets knocked out I am forced to choose another vehicle?
3. Along those lines, I notice that vehicles have a "repair time" but every time I've gone back to my hanger screen, it's always available to use?
4. I haven't bought any premium content yet, but I'm curious if any of it is "must-have." Again I have been mostly playing tanks, but I'd like to try the planes soon-ish.
5. What do the crew slots do (as in, "train new crew")?
6. Should I be hoarding or spending my gold eagles? The silver lions thing I accrued pretty quickly to almost 80k by doing the tutorials or just playing random matches.
7. In the tank battles, I find that most often I am dying, sometimes in a single shot, to tanks "sniping" across the map. Is this normal or are there shenanigans afoot? Granted, I try not to cross open terrain, but...
I will apply for membership into the squadron tonight. I assume that people are still pretty active in the game?
1. You gain two types of research points from battles. Vehicle research points that go towards unlocking your next vehicle and Modification research that unlocks modules from the vehicle you played as during the battle. Modifications improve your vehicles performance, and in tanks having the Parts and FPE mods are invaluable as they keep your tank alive longer
2. In arcade tanks I think they cap the number of lives you have. In arcade planes you can bring as many aircraft as you have crews.
3. Ehicles have to repair and rearm after every battle. If you look in the bottom corner of the screen there should be a box with a wrench and box with bullets with checkmarks next to them. If you don't auto-repair it will take a certain amount of real time before that vehicle is usable again.
4. As far as tanks go, I don't know about must have, but the German KV-1 is pretty beastly. Strong soviet armor + big German gun. Who do you play as mostly?
5. Crews allow you to bring more planes to a fight, and a wider selection of vehicles to an engagement. In realistic tanks having more crews means more options of what to respawn in. Each crew has its own crew level that you can increase by using, so if you do sim battles you may want one designated strong crew for your tanks and the rest just normal.
6. Hoard them for now
7. In arcade you appear with a big name over your head and that little red/yellow/green indicator telling the person if their shot will penetrate or not, so cross map kills are very easy in that mode.
What time are you normally able to play?

Caved and bought the "Steam Pack" on, well, Steam. Figured a couple premium planes and the single player campaigns sounded fun.
The A6m5 ko is a great plane and can really accelerate your research in the Japanese tree.
The XP-38 is Mich better, though the 38s are still vulnerable to fire. The nose mounted cannon and machine guns concentrating your fire means it packs a solid punch.
The single player campaigns are fine. You get exclusive decals from them.
Can't remember off-hand but you also get something like two weeks premium and 2500 eagles?
Also, the conversion rate for using eagles to boost research isn't great, so I'd avoid that
I noticed that, in fact I really haven't found anything to spend them on yet. Which I find odd, you'd think they'd shove something like that in your face?

You can use them to automatically unlock a module for a vehicle, unlock a skin for a vehicle, boost research (bad value), buy Silver Lions (bad value), buy other premium vehicles, buy premium time
Skins and Decals can be purchased with eagles, but almost all can be earned through in-game actions.
There are a handful of skins that are officially in game that were created by players. Those are gold eagle purchase only and the creators of the skins get a kick back from it.

Started playing this again recently after hopping in and remembering how fun T2 US planes are. Working my way through the US tank line now, which is painful coming from my unlocked-up-to-T3-Russians. Fortunately, I've had some very good matches in the crappy little reserve tank (2-3 kills + tons of medals) that it won't be long before I'm making decent progress down the sherman line.
I had a question, though about penetration in the tank side of things. Each tank has a pen value listed when you mouse over it, but then each ammo type also has penetration values. Do those two stack or is one limited by the other or something? I poked around a bit on google and couldn't come up with satisfactory answers. Thanks in advance and I look forward to flying/tanking with you fine gents again.
1. So, if I understand this right: research is sort of the "rank up/levels" you can earn in this game, right? To put it in the parlance of the times, it's sort of like leveling the weapons worked in MW2 then?
Yeah. You can set what planes/tanks you want researched next, as well as upgrade modules for your planes. However! What you are using affects how much research goes towards whatever vehicle you're currently researching. For example: If you're only flying tier 1, but you're currently researching say, a tier 5 jet, you're going to get a SEVERE research points penalty towards that Jet. Instead of that 2000 RP you got, you might only get < 10% of that 2000 RP going towards that Jet.
2. Once I research a vehicle, it basically has "one life." So in arcade battles if it gets knocked out I am forced to choose another vehicle?
1 life per plane per match (You can buy a "second life" token, but its a waste of money, and consumable), tanks have a different system, but I don't really play tanks. Moon covered it though.
3. Along those lines, I notice that vehicles have a "repair time" but every time I've gone back to my hanger screen, it's always available to use?
If you don't have auto repair enabled then your vehicle will use that repair time. Auto repair costs silver lions, but in arcade and RB, the repair cost isn't even worth looking at. In the later tiers in RB, if you're doing rather poorly, you'll start to notice it a tad, but its not a huge deal. On a slightly related note (in terms of vehicle lockout) if you leave a match within the first, what, 5 minutes? your lineup will be locked out for 5 minutes before you can re-queue. Not a big deal in arcade. But in RB, where you have 1 life, getting knocked out by a teammate at the start of the match will enable this lockout. So, just a future heads up.
4. I haven't bought any premium content yet, but I'm curious if any of it is "must-have." Again I have been mostly playing tanks, but I'd like to try the planes soon-ish.
Awhile ago, I would have said buying crew XP for your crew skills would be the best early GE investment. It might still be, actually. But I would hold onto any GE you have and see what you think would be a good investment.
Crew Skills
Premium Time
Later tier premium planes
These are what I would suggest for Eagles. Crew Skills, I would focus on getting the Expert qualification threshold for your early planes (100-150 crew level), then focus on weapon reloading / maintenence and pilot vitality.
Premium time isn't suuuper great for tier 1-3, but come tier 4-5, you'll start to feel the grind of unlocking planes. So if you're interested in Jets, hold onto your eagles for grinding those out.
5. What do the crew slots do (as in, "train new crew")?
Crew slots (or Hangers) will let you bring more planes into a match. You can buy up to 5 with Silver Lions, after that they cost Golden Eagles. 5 is more than enough. If you're burning all 5 of your planes in a match, you're being waaay too reckless =P
6. Should I be hoarding or spending my gold eagles? The silver lions thing I accrued pretty quickly to almost 80k by doing the tutorials or just playing random matches.
Hoard them. Save them until one of the 3 options above catches your fancy. You'll be rolling in Silver Lions fairly quickly. Its only in late Tier 3+ that buying planes will start to put a big dent in your SL wallet.
7. In the tank battles, I find that most often I am dying, sometimes in a single shot, to tanks "sniping" across the map. Is this normal or are there shenanigans afoot? Granted, I try not to cross open terrain, but...
Arcade tank battles give you an aim assist reticle (that little + symbol). Green is a penetration shot, Yellow is a semi pen shot and Red is don't bother, therefore it is very easy to snipe tanks from across the map in a single shot (if they can penetrate your armour). normal Realistic tank battles don't give you the aim assist, but still has the name tags (last I checked). Sim battles gets rid of everything and staples your camera to the top of the tank.
SUPER SAGE ADVISE:
Menu > Game Options > Interface. Scroll down a bit, and turn Fuel Indication, Ammo Indication, Temperature Indication to ALWAYS. I have no idea why this isn't on by default, because its super ultra helpful.
Menu > Controls > Instructor. Turn them all OFF. The top one especially. It makes Domination matches a pain in the gosh darn bumtox, because the instructor (he flies your plane, you can't turn him off, just make him stop doing stupid things) won't let you touch the ground unless you're under a certain speed for landing. In domination matches, you want to be hitting the runway at around 450-500 kph, cap, then speed off. You don't want to actually slow down and land. Just be gentle about it.
Menu > Main Parameters for changing aerobatic smoke or distance/speed units to the barbaric Imperial system.
Bind pitch up and pitch down to something easily reachable (I use mouse buttons). In arcade you can't rip off your wings with speed (ignore the warnings) and you can only stall the plane by reaching the stall speed (which isn't a big deal, the instructor will point you down. You won't start spiraling out of control). So if you want to be in the 90th percentile of pilots and win turn fights (against a plane you can turn with), roll a little, combat flaps (or landing), pitch up, rudder in the direction of your turn and watch yourself become an instant ace pilot! American planes have strong elevators, so just pitching up towards your enemy with flaps is good enough, but Americans aren't great for turn fighting against most aircraft.
Don't do head on attacks against aircraft with nose mounted guns. Fire some shots above the plane at 1.4-1km if you have nose mounted guns, then start dodging.
This is the best video on how to use the lead indicator in arcade. You can also turn it off if you want to be all hardcore.
In the hanger, there is a little box icon to the upper left of the screen. This button will show you the inside bits and pieces of the vehicles. Not super useful for planes, but its great for learning the weak spots on tanks. Learn all the thin armour spots and weapon racks of the tanks and you will have a much easier time killing targets.
Y manually reloads your guns in arcade (I don't know if the game teaches you this. It sure as hell didn't teach me).
AP-I (Armour Piercing Incendiary) and HEI (High Explosive Incendiary) rounds (or rounds like them, use them as a base) are the most effective at blowing off wings / Pilot kill (HEI) or setting engines / fuel tanks on fire (AP-I)
The part of the tooltip that says HEF-I/HEF-I/HEF-SAPI/AP is what is being cycled through. So if you're using a belt that is IT/IT/IT/IT/IT/IT/AP, most of your ammo is weak Incendiary Tracer rounds.
Weapon Convergence (Weapon Distance). You can set this before you spawn your plane. Setting this up and holding off on shooting until you're close to this range will increase the effectiveness of your fire on planes with wing mounted guns, as the enemy plane will be in the area where your bullets have the closest grouping. While not totally ineffective outside of that convergence range, your shots will peppering all over the enemy plane. You might get lucky and hit something critical, but it will take longer to kill the target.

It's truly mind boggling how bad or awesome your team can be in AB tank matches. If you're team doesn't win the initial rush it seems like 90% of the time you'll lose an AB.
On a side note...wow am I bad with the M4A3(105). Have to stick with the other tier 2 shermans.

I got this game on my PS4. I want to like it but man its dense. Even changing controls is a chore.
A) I just finished all the tutorials. What should I be doing? Is there a way to turn your tank on a dime while stopped? I can't figure this out and it makes assault guns a pain.
I unlock modules and vehicles via currency if I just finished a round and I end up with a Capcom Magic Pixel's worth of research to go, but that's about it. Yeah, I could just do one more round but meh, it's usually only a couple Bison Bucks so whatever. I'm impatient like that

Unrelated to questions:
Wagers are dumb. The new system is dumb.

I noticed that, in fact I really haven't found anything to spend them on yet. Which I find odd, you'd think they'd shove something like that in your face?
You can use them to automatically unlock a module for a vehicle, unlock a skin for a vehicle, boost research (bad value), buy Silver Lions (bad value), buy other premium vehicles, buy premium time
There are a handful of skins that are officially in game that were created by players. Those are gold eagle purchase only and the creators of the skins get a kick back from it.
MY TURN!
1 life per plane per match (You can buy a "second life" token, but its a waste of money, and consumable), tanks have a different system, but I don't really play tanks. Moon covered it though.
Crew slots (or Hangers) will let you bring more planes into a match. You can buy up to 5 with Silver Lions, after that they cost Golden Eagles. 5 is more than enough. If you're burning all 5 of your planes in a match, you're being waaay too reckless =P
Hoard them. Save them until one of the 3 options above catches your fancy. You'll be rolling in Silver Lions fairly quickly. Its only in late Tier 3+ that buying planes will start to put a big dent in your SL wallet.
AP-I (Armour Piercing Incendiary) and HEI (High Explosive Incendiary) rounds (or rounds like them, use them as a base) are the most effective at blowing off wings / Pilot kill (HEI) or setting engines / fuel tanks on fire (AP-I)
Weapon Convergence (Weapon Distance).
That's about all I can think of for now.
@Konphujun
On a side note...wow am I bad with the M4A3(105). Have to stick with the other tier 2 shermans.
Germans, I think
A) I just finished all the tutorials. What should I be doing?
