Are you playing planes or tanks first? Most of the things are the same on both fronts, but the recommended order in which to do early game stuff is different.
For planes: every nation starts in biplanes with terrible guns. Unless your Russia. Depending on how well you do or do not adapt, you move to Tier I planes. Which are a bit better than the starter Reserve planes. Unless your Russia. You will start seeing the difference in playstyle in Tier I. Germany starts moving toward energy fighting with Boom-and-Zoom tactics. US starts putting machine guns on everything with a lot of bullets. Russia puts wings on tanks.
Each plane has a differing amount of upgrades that make the plane perform better. Everything from new guns, and belts to a new airframe, wing and upgrades and various other things. When you select a plane to work on, the plane immediately above it is the one that will give your newly selected plane a boost in research. You must research a plane before you can purchase it.
There are two types of currency - silver eagles (in-game) and golden lions (real money). As a new player, you'll get a bunch of each for free. Hold off on spending any golden lions on anything until you really know what you want to spend them on. Otherwise, you earn silver eagles by shooting the enemy, bombing targets, winning, etc.
There are four types of experience point / research point - modification, chassis, general, and crew. Modification experience is specific to a particular type of aircraft, and unlocks various upgrades for that plane. Chassis experience is what you use to research new planes - as Nija mentioned, you get a bonus to this when you use, say, the American F4F-3 to research the F4F-4, which is the next plane in the chain. You earn general research points in the same way that you earn other points (actions in battle, winning, etc.). General research points don't actually do anything by themselves; however, they can be converted into chassis experience to give your research towards a new plane a boost. Doing so costs golden eagles (real money); it's almost never worth converting them, IME.
Crew experience is kinda the odd-man-out here. Crew experience is specific to the crew slot (the position of the plane on your bottom bar). It improves your pilot and gunner performance in battle. So, if your first crew slot has a pilot Awareness skill of 20, then regardless of which particular airplane happens to be in that slot, you'll have a pilot Awareness skill of 20.
When you first get a plane, it'll be in terrible condition. To get the most out of it, you'll need to research all (or most) of its modifications. The single most important modification is the upgraded bullets mod for your main guns.
Ammo belts are described by how the ammo in them repeats. So, for instance, AP/AP/AP/AP-I has three armor-piercing rounds followed by an armor-piercing incindiery tracer round. If you shoot 200 bullets, you'll have shot 150 AP and 50 AP-I rounds.
Most guns start with something like, AP/Ball/Ball/Tracer. Ball rounds are awful - they're just regular bullets with no special properties that don't do much damage against anything. You'll want to switch that out for a Universal ammo belt (so named because it's decent against most targets) as soon as possible, which, depending on the gun, will have something like AP/AP-I/I/T. Depending on what you end up fighting (and how good you are), Ground Target and Stealth Attack ammo might be useful, too. Still, start with Universal. (Some people, especially early on, go with Tracer belts for their chance to light enemies on fire. That can be fun, too.)
After upgrading your ammunition, the next best bangs-for-the-buck are usually the performance upgrades: radiator, engine, wing repair, etc. Those will, generally, make your plane fly faster and climb better, and as the old saying goes, "Speed is life." Altitude is just speed stored up for later. For some planes, you'll want to research better bomb or rocket loadouts, as well.
Just about everything - aircraft, modifications - works on a tier system. You'll need to research (and purchase, usually) enough items in a particular tier to move on to the next. So, you need to research 2 Tier 1 modifications (ammo belts and radiator) before you can research any Tier 2 modifications (new guns and engine refurb). You'll need to research 6 Tier 1 planes before you can research a Tier 2 plane. Etc.
Crew Slots
So, what's a crew slot? A crew slot is a place where you can have 1 vehicle "ready to go." You start with a couple, and can buy more for each nation for silver lions for a bit, and then after that you need to pay golden eagles (real money).
In Arcade Battle mode, each crew slot is 1 life. If you've got 5 crew slots, you can fly 5 planes in an Arcade match. Having more is an obvious increase in your ability to keep playing, and you'll want to spread your crew experience out across your slots.
In Realistic or Simulator mode, the crew slots don't matter as much, as you generally only get 1 or 2 lives in each match (a ground match might let you have 1 tank life and 1 airplane life, for instance). Accodingly, if you plan on playing entirely or mostly Realistic / Sim modes, you might want to consolidate your crew experience into just 1 or 2 crew slots.
In the end, I think it makes sense to have as many crew slots as you can buy for silver lions because Arcade is really where you make money, and then just specialize them: slots 4 and 5 are bomber slots, 1 and 2 are fighter slots, etc.
It costs silver lions to unlock a plane once you've researched it, and it costs more (though usually a lot less) to train a particular crew for that airframe. So, using some made-up numbers, you need to get 1,000 research points to unlock the F2A-1 Buffalo. Once you have, you can buy it for 1,000 lions - which also unlocks the F2A-3 Buffalo for research. Then, it costs you another 100 silver lions to train Crew 1 to fly the Buffalo, which lets you bring it into battle. If you want Crew 2 to be able to fly the Buffalo, you'll need to spend another 100 lions. Your crews never forget how to fly a plane, so once it's unlocked for a crew it's unlocked forever.
That's a beautiful overview. That is what happens when someone puts a lot of thought, time and information into a post, instead of trying to put at the end of their lunch break like me.
Gah, just had an almost entirely passive RB team - everyone took off, and then most of them either climbed for the moon or ran for the map edges immediately, leaving me to take on twelve fighters in a tight group. (I feel okay about getting three of them, but still.)
I just Do Not Get that sort of thing. The occasional bomber doing it to grief I can see, but this was eleven tier 1 and 2 fighters...
I played tanks a bit this weekend. I saw Rutgen <sp?> Forest the first time. How can anyone think that map is balanced?! I did like that the other team nicely lined themselves up for my tank and artillery though. It was very nice of them. Got the heavy metal achievement for the first time. Still a terrible map.
I come in too hard to cap an airfield in Domination breaking my landing gear and propeller so I calmly, whilst under fire, loop the loop and belly land to cap the airfield.
My plane comes to a halt completely immobile and then I mange to get a hit on a plane landing that is attempting to recapture as it zips past me.

Compared to the other maps it's a vast improvement. Like how 'Garbage' is a vast improvement over 'Shit'.

My only problem is that I don't have many of those US tanks and I don't think I should be flying support.
I think the WT match I just played was WWII in a nutshell or something.
RB, Soviets versus Germans, with the Germans in a tightly organized high-altitude cluster of a dozen or so that were obviously coordinating with each other, and the Soviets as an example of, well, Russian organization. The Germans tended to have a 1-2km altitude advantage over any groups of Soviet aircraft they could find, and wiped us all out without much difficulty...
... Meanwhile, there's still that one Il-2 that never got higher than 200 meters' altitude the entire match that gets attacked by a couple, laughs as one plows into the trees diving on it, manages to claw down another, and proceeds to evade the others long enough to win the match on ground target kills.
Holy shit, we actually won a Norway mission last night!
Me (cannon Corsair) and a bunch of Brits took the Nazis out to the woodshed. Had 5 planes still flying when the last of the Huns was shot down.
I ended with 2 kills and 4 assists.
Aaaaaaalmost makes up for the Norway mission earlier in the evening when I got 2 DD kills with rockets and I think that was all my team actually knocked out.
Had one of those random RBs where I died almost immediately but it was worth it for the speccing. No organized squads or whatnot of any type, just two dozen people who didn't know each other; my team was Gloriously Incompetent and within minutes there were only two of them left against I think six or seven on the other team. I was the second person shot down in the match, because of course I was.
The last two players on my team proceeded to rig up some sort of telepathic link between themselves to win the match, going through everyone on the other team and having to land to reload and repair at-times quite critical damage twice each. Perfect coordination, mutual cover at all times, effortless-looking Thach weaves when attacked, etc., through the next ten or fifteen minutes until the last of the other team went down.
The chat towards the end of the match was entertaining. Lot of sputtering awe from the opposing team and some stuff like "...yeeeah, we're gonna have to stay in touch" from the two pilots who pulled that off.
Watching a couple WT players who obviously really really know what they're doing is fun.
What's that B-17 1.71 kms away? I thought you said the you don't need to worry about me? You'll have to speak up as I can't hear you over the roaring fire coming from your tail.
I seem to be having luck for decent matches lately. 12v12 RB, the only morons on either team were the obligatory dude who nosedives into the ground two kilometers from his runway, just about everyone got at least an assist or some ground kills, it turned into one of those last-plane standing things, and - this is the eldritch, frightening part - people on both sides were being polite and complimentary to each other. What is that madness?
(Also I downed three players and a ship, but that's icing alongside playing with a decent matchfull of players.)
I'm also trying to figure out how guilty I should be at playing the I-185 M-82 in RB...
I don't see the point in having the Po-2. I did a test flight with it yesterday and reached the actual top speed (123km). It seems like it would be a liability to have in your lineup. There are no forward guns and a single turret. It has a decent bomb capacity, but I don't think that is going to help it's limited utility.
My five kills in that match were 4 high-altitude bombers and FW-190 that came up to dispute me popping high-altitude bombers. Went the whole match with 1 aircraft, the King Cobra I'm filling out the modifications for.
The previous match was a two-airfield domination match where we went down to about 20% life before we took a runway, and we then proceeded to take both runways and hold them, pretty much consistently, for the rest of the match. It was glorious, because it started off so, so, so bad.
I'm trying to figure out which is better - the 80s-martial-arts-movie comebacks like that where the team has no business winning and suddenly does, or the hammer-and-tongs ones where nobody knows who's going to win until the last five seconds or so.
Also, finally had a GE wager last more than three rounds; made it to nine wins before the wager was completed. Huzzah!
(I also now officially feel guilty at liking the I-185 M-82.)

I have been playing mixed mode tanks and planes. Mostly Tier 1, but made some forays into tier 2 USA yesterday. Me with my brand new M4 and Grant, solo, was seeing tier 3 and 4 tanks. After a couple rounds of getting sniped from across the map I gave up.
Haven't checked yet to see if others are (still) complaining about the match maker in their forums, was wondering if anyone knew about any recent changes to it.

I've been hanging around a few specific plane tiers in RB lately, so I haven't noticed much personally with tanks. High-tier tanks is apparently deeply nightmarish if you aren't Russian, though I'm nowhere near that level yet.
Also, by mixed mode do you mean arcade battles? The aim assist in that mode makes getting sniped from entirely different theatres of war pretty common - you might actually find it easier in realistic (or even sim) mode depending on your play style, at least once you're familiar with the maps.
Pilots! Especially for those of you who have yearned for long and dynamic air battles, we are pleased to announce that we are developing a new game mode for update 1.51 "Cold Steel" that will allow you to play for several hours, allowing an unlimited number of revivals. In this game mode, players can connect to the battle at any time (except for game sessions that have ended). In this game mode, there are specific objectives that have been created, and players will have multiple tasks that they will need to complete: for fighters - to destroy all enemy aircraft; for attackers - to destroy all enemy AAA; for bombers - to bomb enemy strategic targets. As well as this, we are developing more combat missions and creating additional tactical situations., which will become available to players from time to time.
The more a team destroys enemy aircraft and ground targets, captures strategic areas, and completes other additional tasks, the more points that team will receive, hence drawing them closer to victory.
Players that first join one of these battles must start out by using lower tiered aircraft for their team. More powerful aircraft will be available after some time. For successful actions during the battle, this time will be reduced; in other words, to be able to fight with more powerful vehicles, you must first show that you are useful for your team on lower tiered or "wicked/poor" aircraft. Higher tiered vehicles will be available after some time. After flying with an aircraft, vehicles of this type and levels will be locked for some time (so the player must change the type or level of their intended vehicle, as opposed to using the same thing again and again).
Joining one of these battles will be possible at any time, except for the last 5 minutes before the mission ends.
Players who are not active (not joining in the battle for longer than 60 seconds) will be removed from the game session.
The first players who can enjoy the new game mode "Endless sessions", will be those who play Realistic and Simulator Battles in the Tab "Events". We are looking for your feedback, which is going to be crucial for the development of this game mode.
Yeah, that sounds pretty cool to me, with the possible exception of logging into match, finding out that you're allowed to use biplanes, and everyone else is already in FW-190s.
So ... Bearcats. I just unlocked the first one, and managed to score ... 2 kills? ... before my 10 free repairs ran out. Holy shit does this thing overheat. Still gets easily outclimbed by ... yep, FW-190s.
Dear players! The long awaited “Enduring Confrontation” mode introduced with Update 1.51 will soon be available to the pilots of Realistic and Simulator Battles. Now you can help us to make this mode even better and prepare it for launch!
Join the first continuous test of “Enduring Confrontation” in Simulator mode. With your help, we will be able to further improve this new and exciting game mode, so don’t forget to leave your feedback, ideas and impressions here!
Test will start on July the 2nd at 14:00 GMT
The mode is available in the “Events and tournaments” tab
Test Conditions:
This time, the test will be available only in “Simulator Battles”;
All players have a preconfigured vehicle set-up. In the final version, you will have the possibility to use your own presets in this mode;
To participate, you must have at least one Rank III aircraft in your hangar.
Attention! As this is a test run, it can be stopped at any time. So hurry up to take part in the test!
About the game mode:
In this game mode, players can join the battle at any time (except for game sessions that have ended). The battles are subject to specific objectives and players will have multiple tasks that they will need to complete: for fighters, to destroy all enemy aircraft; for attackers, to destroy all enemy AAA; for bombers, to bomb enemy strategic targets. As well as this, we are developing more combat missions and creating additional tactical situations., which will become available to players from time to time.
Aircraft repairs are free, but each flyout is paid for Silver Lions and the recently joined player begins with weaker aircraft - he will get access to more powerful vehicles after some time spent in the battle, the time may be reduced by completing the dynamic tasks and destroying enemy aircraft.
The general tasks of the mode are the following: scouting enemy airfields, search and destruction of ground targets, interception of the enemy aircraft and many more, with the list of tasks being regularly updated. After completing specific tasks new ones will appear. For each completed task, each destroyed vehicle or captured zone the team receives Air
Features:
Reward for the mission is paid after a player leaves the battle and doesn’t depend on the battle’s end result. A certain bonus is also added after the mission is over.
After a player has chosen a certain aircraft it will be locked for some time starting from the moment the aircraft was destroyed. E.g. if the vehicle is available once per 30 minutes, a player can chose it 30 minutes after his vehicle was destroyed, not after he started to fly. This also means that a player who managed to land on the airfield may change his vehicle without restarting the timer. .
Vehicles of the same BR and type have common timer. Available types: Fighters, Attackers, Bombers (heavy fighters belong to fighters, naval bombers to bombers etc.)
It will be useful to keep aircraft of all types in your preset so you won’t be left without an aircraft to fly in the midst of battle.
Timer duration depends on Battle Rating. The higher the BR, the longer is the timer duration.
Vehicles of the lower BR spectrum for the specific session do not come with a timer and will always be available
Note: The Session Battle Rating is the range of minimal and maximal BR available in the specific session. Thus, Session BR 5.0-6.3 means that any player who has his top BR vehicle within this limit can join the session.
E.g. for a ”5.0 - 6.3” BR session, vehicles with BR 5.0 and lower will have no timer, 5.3 vehicles will have shortest timer duration and 6.3 BR vehicles will have the longest.

No answer yet, but I'll just throw some stuff up here!
In addition to @Nija's great post ...

(Also I downed three players and a ship, but that's icing alongside playing with a decent matchfull of players.)
I'm also trying to figure out how guilty I should be at playing the I-185 M-82 in RB...

Also, finally had a GE wager last more than three rounds; made it to nine wins before the wager was completed. Huzzah!
(I also now officially feel guilty at liking the I-185 M-82.)

So ... Bearcats. I just unlocked the first one, and managed to score ... 2 kills? ... before my 10 free repairs ran out. Holy shit does this thing overheat. Still gets easily outclimbed by ... yep, FW-190s.
Fucking hate that plane.

Damn thing's worse enemy is slight inclines.
And despite launching football-sized projectiles notorious for knocking out tanks from spalling it bounces like crazy.
Apparently the new Confrontation Mode matches start up in the next couple days. RB with respawns and procedural objectives? Yes please.
They mentioned having multiple airfields to spawn at, and ones under attack will be highlighted.

Ehhhhh.
Better than nothing
(You get that diffuse roar you expect from a bunch of props in close proximity if you're near other planes.)
