I still need to kill Satan to unlock the Negative, as I've been doing Chest runs to unlock items. So I take my super-powered Guppy Isaac to the Womb and kill Mom as usual. The Angel room opens, and I have a key piece already. I am confident that I can kill Mega-Satan, and it turns out that you can bomb the angel statue even if the room just offers the way to the Cathedral. So I go to bomb the statue.
What I did not realize is that the statue counts as a block, and you can just crush it if you have the Stompy ability. So I prematurely start the fight, taking damage since I'm basically on top of the thing, and the knock-back throws me into the cathedral portal.
So not only was I denied Mega-Satan, I was also robbed of my regular Sheol run. Fuck everything.

Ludovico is another item that has synergy with Azrael. It turns his charge up mini brimstone into a controllable ring of brimstone and the ring destroys things. I got Polyphemus during the run and it melts everything.
What is this Mega-Satan everyone is talking about? When does that unlock? I unlocked It Lives about 3-4 kills ago.
So, here's how you unlock the nasty biz that is Mega Satan:
Beat either The Chest or The Dark Room. You should see a Secret Unlock screen pop up saying "Angels await" or something like that.
Then, find an Angel Room, and bomb the statue. Statue comes to life as a boss. Beat it, and you get a key fragment. Do that one more time and you get the 2nd key fragment, which then becomes the Golden Key. Make your way to The Dark Room, and there should be a giant Golden Door/Gate. It'll unlock automatically.
Man, the boss rushes on each character are going to be really tough for me. I greatly prefer to be methodical on each floor... not to mention you sort of have to get pretty lucky in getting a fairly strong run very early in order to do it considering how tough the boss rush itself is.
Item Room items could be basically anything, with a tendency to be some kind of weaponry or power-improving item.
Boss items are almost always stat boosters, particularly health expansions.
Anything you get from the Devil tends to be an offensive upgrade.
Shop items tend to be meta-items or "items about items", like the treasure maps, compass, Habit, Battery, and so on.
The Secret room tends to give you money, or if anything one of the Treasure Chest items (like Tammy's Head or Bobby's Brain).
The super-secret room might be health or a defensive upgrade (most of the holy items).
Dark Bums are mostly further Devil Rooms.
And the Sacrifice Rooms tend to be really, really low-grade Devil rooms.
Looking over all of that, if you're aiming for speed, you really only want good offenses, with most of your defenses coming from good play rather than trying to tank it out with statistics. To achieve that, you could pretty easily get by with just Item Room and Boss Room upgrades, and you can consider the Devil Room an extension of the Boss Room for speed purposes.
I mean, it's true that you're missing out on a lot of resources by not fully exploring each floor. But "get the Item Room and then head to the Boss" sounds workable for getting to the Boss Rush.
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

Sacrifice Rooms can give you Guppy items. It is a good idea to go to sacrifice rooms.
Edit: You'd also be surprised how often The Mark is just sitting on a pedastal in sacrifice room (albeit surrounded by spiders).
The spike trap rooms I'm not so sure, full heart of damage and it only guarantees a chest at half a heart, I feel the reward for almost killing yourself is garbage in that room.

1000% worth it if you have Holy Mantle tho. Since it can soak both direction's damage.
Actually I believe Rubycat is combining two rooms there.
There's the curse room that damages you coming and going, and the sacrifice room that has the spike in the middle that MIGHT give you a chest, but is only guaranteed to do so if using it reduces you to half a heart container.
Well, I've got my first character with full bloody marks on the select screen, so all kills on normal/hard including the boss rush. It's Azazel, but still. Took a few tries, I got to the boss rush the first time on a pretty decent run where I got Holy Mantle really early on, awesome item. I was just taking waaay too much damage on the boss rush, made it to the last set of horsemen I think it was.
Had a really shitty run after that where I died, and then I had a fairly decent run going, got a full halo of flies from pills, some damage, Dark Bum, etc. On the boss rush, the only good item was Gemini, which seemed fine since I had to get close for my Brimstone shots anyway. The flies protected me a lot and for some reason, an item I had was making kills drop half hearts quite a bit, so Dark Bum was scooping those up like crazy and giving me extra health during the fight. The item at the end was a Technology, but I'm terrible at identifying which is which, so I grabbed it. Ended up being specifically Technology and it was firing fairly slowly... which was annoying because I had found tons of Tears Up pills to that point. I headed down to the womb, really hoping for one more Guppy item to save the run. I got another Tears Up pill, and when I took it, suddenly I was shooting really fast... it's like it correctly recalculated my Tears stat and realized I should've been shooting way faster, seems like a bit of a bug when I first took it though.
Anyway, despite many red chests on the womb and beyond, I never did get a Guppy item, but luckily the faster firing Technology was more than enough. I also had the Cancer zodiac item, which gives you the Wafer effect after you take one hit in a room, which was insanely useful against bosses especially on the womb and beyond. I went to the Cathedral and then to the Chest, had no real problems at that point.
One weird thing I noticed was that some of the HP up items I had gotten earlier in the run hadn't been giving me HP containers... not sure what was up with that. In particular, I thought I had gotten Magic Scab... but in retrospect, maybe it was Blood Clot. When I got to the Chest, the 4 items were pretty much crap outside of a Magic Mushroom, which did give me an HP container, so whatever. Ended up being a good run, and now I don't have to touch Azazel again for a while, unless I want to unlock the secret character I suppose. Ugh.
I got all the way to Cathedral on it (which is fucking ridiculous of a requirement). I don't really know what the 'strategy' is, I mean getting Mom's Knife or Brimstone would be good, but it's hard to get Devil rooms considering how easy it is to hit yourself.
When on the Isaac/Devil killing and getting picture pieces phase, do I have to keep the killing the same boss 4 times in a row or can I mix it up? Can't tell if photo fragments are replacing each other or just laying over each other!

Suicide King was really easy. Shoot it at the enemy's face and it'll explode before it can boomerang back to you. If you do miss, don't stop moving and it won't catch you. I even started blowing up tinted rocks by shooting away from them and then directing it to curve into the rock by walking in front of it.

Isaac kills get you pieces of the Polaroid, Devil kills get you pieces of the Negative. They're tracked separately and they'll finish when you get all their pieces. On the save file picture they lay over each other... kind of weird, but yeah.
Oh yeah, I forgot about a couple other interesting things about my Azazel Hard Chest run last night... I got Pyromaniac really early on, so despite the fact that I was running on spirit hearts almost the entire time and wasn't benefiting from the healing, just being immune to explosions was insanely useful. As a note, I don't remember if it was in this thread or on chat or YT comments that I saw it, but it's true that the Mom's Foot stomp attack is classified as explosion damage for... some reason. So, if you have Pyromaniac, you're immune to being stomped and it will actually heal you.
The other thing that I nabbed, and at the time I wasn't sure it was doing anything, was Shielded Tears. It became more obvious once I got that Technology, but basically your Brimstone/Laser destroys tears at that point, which is insanely useful on the bullet hell fights in the later portions of the game, making you almost immune to damage there.
Edit: If anyone's watching Northernlion's Rebirth series, episode 49 today shows the exact bug I was talking about with Technology. He has a sweet, fast charging Monstro's Lung with Cricket's Body combo going, then he picks up Technology and gets this slow shooting laser, despite how many Tears upgrades he had gotten. Seems like the run might be screwed completely, then he kills the Womb 1 boss and gets the Screw which has a Tears Up associated with it, suddenly his laser from Technology starts shooting really fast and everything's fine. Exactly what happened to me with Azazel last night.

Note to self. When having a really good run, DO NOT LINGER IN THE D6 REROLL ROOM!
Or else you end up with Ipecac, Rubber cement, and Loki's horns...
Not necessarily. All my full item rerolls have resulted in some sort of technology + a bunch of fly items runs, which usually end up doing really well.

Yeah, except I was doing well enough that it was a dumb risk to reroll. And I paid dearly for it. Horribly, horribly dearly.

I had a weird glitch earlier today where I kept getting sent back to this one particular room, no matter what door I actually passed through. It was bizarre.

You probably had a curse of the lost on that floor

Sounds like Curse of the Maze combined with silly RNG.
I got Missing No on my Demo Man run, thinking I was clever. Didn't realize it re-rolls your build every floor. I still won, but some of those floors were brutal. Spent a painfully long time on a challenge room, trying to take out fast Globins with a low tear rate Tiny Planet.
Has anyone had issues with some achievements not showing up on the PS4 version? I unlocked Azael ages ago, but the achievement hasn't popped up yet. Otherwise, I'm really enjoying this-the original version didn't grab me too much, but I've just beat mom's heart for the third time and have every intention of really diving in for the crazy completionist stuff.
I wish this game wasn't so emo. Even if my gf and I watch South Park together, and the art direction in this makes us both cringe. The gameplay and mechanics makes up for it I guess.
Well, it took a few tries to get a start that wasn't complete shit, but I completed an Isaac hard mode run through to the Lamb. At the end I had this:
That's... triple shot, flaming, lump of coal, piercing scythe tears along with almost every major damage upgrade in the game: Pentagram, The Pact, The Mark, Cricket's Head, Cat o' 9 Tails... I was also a single item away from becoming Guppy, but couldn't get it, though I did get Mulligan by rerolling a Bob's Rotten Head pedestal on the room before Satan, so that was pretty nice. I also had flying from Lord of the Pit from an earlier devil deal. My range was good, so lump of coal did some good work, fire rate could've been better, but it wasn't too slow really. I also got the Cancer zodiac sign again by rerolling a chest in the Dark Room a few times, so I was basically unkillable at that point.
It wasn't my fastest Lamb kill by a long shot, the rather slow shot speed of triple shot just wasn't generating many flies, but it really didn't matter. I still didn't get hit because once he separated, I used my Algiz rune and was invincible for the rest of it, which didn't take too long.
Oh, and I did manage to get Black Candle by rerolling a shop a couple of times, which is insaaanely useful on hard mode runs, since hard mode loves to throw curses at you almost every floor. I really really really hate curse of the blind when you have the d6...

Shops, secret rooms, trap/challenge rooms, curse rooms, all worth exploring.
Unless you're after the boss rush, there's no sense in skipping them if you can afford to.
