Unless something changed with colonization, you get blue doff for completing the chain, and it unloks a repeatable that gives a purple one on crit. You can get the purple one multiple times too.

Yeah, i meant one *type* per chain, sorry... as in you can repeat it for a chance at the same purple.

I have enough Zen to buy something shiny. I'm leaning towards a c-store ship of some sort since those are account wide unlocks.

Anyways, question about fleet ships. If I buy one is that an account wide unlock or is it just for that character?

  • ScooterScooter Registered User regular
Just character, also, keep in mind that most of the cstore ships need an additional upgrade to get to 60 now.

Yeah I figured as much. Thanks for the answer.

Edit: I can't decide what to buy. It's too bad there isn't a way to test drive ships before you buy them. It seems like they could set up a holodeck simulation for that. Let you pick a ship and fly it against a few waves of npc ships just to get a feel for how it handles. Giving people a taste of other ships might even increase their sales.

I'm looking at the Avenger Battlecruiser which is nice but I already have the Mogh KDF side so I kind of want something new and different. The Patrol Escort refit is neat too but I really like how sturdy cruisers are so I'm looking at the Odyssey or the Vesta bundle or the Regent Assault Cruiser refit. I know a lot of people like the Vesta but I'm kind of ambivalent about it. I really liked my basic Odyssey that I got back in the day so the bundle with all the consoles seems rather neat. Or I could buy the Regent and the Patrol escort instead of a bundle.

    Hrmmm. Decisions decisions.

Fleet ships are single unlocks, but the T5U upgrade is an account unlock, and if there's both a C-store and Fleet version of a ship, applies to both. So, if you buy the Armitage and an upgrade token, you can get the 5U Armitage on all your characters for free. They'll have to spend a module to get the fleet armitage, but all of them will be able to upgrade that one to F5U for free.

So mirror event starts tomorrow. How much do you wanna bet that the enemies will not be scaled for level 60s and will give their old xp amounts?

I bet the contents of my attic they will be better than pre-nerf Tau Dewlap.

Edit: I remember seeing a patch note on tribble about advanced and elite versions of it. Those might be pretty good for it.

Edit again: Blog doesn't mention advanced or elite, only the level 50 version. So, yeah, anyone over level 55 is basically fucked for exp.

Because Fire at Will is civilization.

No, it works regardless of that. It's more a function of 7-8 single beam arrays with FAW being better than 4 DHCs and 3-4 turrets using CRF.

edit: that's even without mentioning the whole anti-proton beam bonanza. You can do 4x AP dual beams front, 2 omni-beams and a cutting beam in the rear, and always be shooting all the lazorz.

Besides the reasons Fartacus mentioned there's also the auto-crit on beam overload (which can be brutal when you gear yourself for a ton of critical severity), and there's the damage drop off based on range for weapons (cannon damage begins dropping off at ranges of 6+ km if I recall). Beam damage doesn't start to drop off until a farther range than cannons. Meaning a ship can stay at a farther range without having to worry about damage reduction.

  • PreacherPreacher Registered User regular
So I was weak and got the delta rising pack. Thankfully I already had a beam boat and so I moved those over to the space squid. Pretty beef, packs a punch can take one and on top its special is only on a 2 minute cooldown and its a nice OOOHH SHIIIIIIIIII

The phantom is probably the best ship of the DO pack. It's a defiant with better everything. The real beauty in the DO pack is being able to get the ship mastery traits for the other vessels and use them in other ships.

    steam_sig.png
  • PreacherPreacher Registered User regular
Yeah played around with the phantom and her tactical int officer, very very nice. Especially with my romulan BO that gives crit bonus's out of cloak and the effective combat cloak like ability. Add to that a useful phaser lance and just very powerful weapon systems I took more damage from blowing ships up than getting hit by them.

Honestly both the eclipse and phantom did decent and with some tweaks I don't mind the look of either.

Well I guess I won't be trying a Kar'Fi battle carrier anytime soon.

I still haven't bought a ship for my Feds. I almost bought the Odyssey pack but I figure they have dyson/event ships to tide them over, I already have the Mogh, and I'm kinda diggin' playing my KDF captains lately anyways. I spent some of my limited zen on a couple of desperately needed retrain tokens and I think I might expand my duty roster slots here in a bit. I'm really keen to get some quality of life upgrades on my characters.

I actually found myself on the website yesterday looking at the 'buy zen' page and just now looking over the subscriber stuff. I might sub for a month just to unlock a few things. It has me wondering about something though. I know the respec tokens you get from ranking up while subscribed aren't retroactively applied if you're already max level but....what about leveling from 50 to 60? Does anyone know if you gain a respec token in that case?

Edit: Guess I'll find out one way or another. Ordered a game time card off Amazon.

Yes at 55 you get a respec token I got one this morning.

And man alive the stealth defiant is a beast. That phaser lance is great, on a 2 minute cool down and with expose can just annihilate enemies.

But really the main feature of the tier 6 ships are those intelligence officers, like my tac one has again a quick stealth pop, an energy weapon increase that slows the firing rate but boosts the damage, a torpedo teleport (which come on why hasn't that been a thing?) and an ability to break something firing on you for a second which can be long enough to save my ass. The looks are growing on me as well, but it helps that since I bought the delta pack I can swap all the nacelles to other ships, the eclipse can even pair nacelles up different from the ships (so your top two can be different than your bottom 2).

I did forget that upgrading takes hours this morning so I had to swap back to my avengers after stripping the engines off my phantom. Woops!

I do like how so far in the Delta Rising expansion its basically "fix the fuck ups of Voyager."

I do like the fact that some of the NPC's finally start acknowledging your rank. It was one of the things that used to bug me with some of the older content. You'd have some lieutenant, or a commander telling you to do something and in the back of my mind I'd be thinking "Umm...hey, you know I do outrank you. Why are you giving me orders exactly?"

  • PreacherPreacher Registered User regular
Yeah its weird that you can be an admiral fuck you and some asshole is throwing orders around. Look buddy I didn't kick the borg/romulan/voth/species whatever the fuck ass to have some lowly captain telling me shit!

so every year or so i get the itch and play a bit more. My federation character is level 54 now or something, I'm so close to 55 (this is the only character I have and I have been playingf the game off and on since I pre-ordered it lol)

I'm a tactical captain that ususally uses cruiser type ships. (ie right now i'm in a sovereign) I was poking around at the 55 ships and there are SO MANY NOW HOLY SHIT. what do I even get/look for? Also through some promo I have a 55U token, how does that thing work?

I guess also also R&D seems complicated and I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm basically just flying season missions, I have like 3 more in the Cardasian DS9 seasons and somehow I've already done the Breen ones although they appear to be super high level now? I don't know, I think I missed a lot of stuff.

    - edit or maybe i'm level like 48 about to hit 50 and have a class 5u token or something? fuck now i forget.

There aren't any specific 55 ships, every new ship is 50+. The token you got will upgrade one of your previous tier 5 ships to add a console and some hull strength.

I think the Breen invasion got moved up in the chain at some point when they felt like merging all of the season stories.

You can do just fine in a sovvy still. The new hotness is that with an upgrade token you can turn most T5 ships into T6's- Er, T5U's, that is, -the bonus is some more hp, a console slot? and some ship specific passive bonuses. The super new hotness are the T6 ships, which come with traits as their final mastery unlock. Some of these traits are pretty awesome.

Intelligence is the new and shiny bridge officer type which only some t6 ships can use thus far.

R&D is not too bad. The bottom option on the list of each division is the logout time xp boost you'll want to run. Once you're level ten or so you can start making not-bad upgrade components for your ship gear of the same type, but you don't really really need to worry about that unless you like spending dilithium and making things go boom even harder.

Advanced or elite queues are the main source for very rare crafting mats, but they can also drop from the "Request R&D assistance" mission at starfleet academy (at the personnel officer) which is a two day run, two day cooldown mission for 1k dil.

Gear upgrade tokens also drop from mobs, but they are fairly rare. I've gotten 2 or 3 purple tokens so far, but I think that was me being jammy.

oh god I started reading your R&D posts and then sorta glazed over, I don't think R&D is for me lol. I already have enough time just doing the regular crew missions and plus I guess at some point I need to like get better bridge officers? I have just a bunch of normal ones for the most part (I think I have a blue Remen and a fancy pants Borg One of One but I dunno what their bonuses are or anything).

In fact I probaly need to get new bridge officers and just retrain everybody at this point. Any BO space and ground recommendations? I guess I'll lose crew XP and have to redo everything? Ugh I forget how all this works.

You /can/ get rarer bridge officers if you want, but the bonuses are typically small apart from outliers like the Rommie crit/cloak murderboner operatives.

The fancy shit is actually in the Duty Officer system, where people will spend tens of millions of ec on doffs that provide neat bonuses to your Bridge Officer abilities when they're slotted in your active duty roster. Five tops. Happily, most of the cool ones come in rare as well as the coveted very rare versions, so you can get some game changers on the cheap anyway.

Some easy examples are as follows:

Projectile Officers of one type or another can, when stacked, take your torpedo cooldowns down to the global when used with a couple torpedo launchers, allowing people to make fun torpedo/cannon boats.

Some other dudes whom I can't recall the name of provide a global reduction to your ability cooldowns when you activate Auxiliary Power to Batteries. These guys are used a lot by people stacking two copies of Aux2Bat, in order to get away with just one copy of every other ability they want. I use just one copy of this with three of these fellows on my Phantom Escort, along with its mastery trait that reduces tactical cooldowns on enemy miss. Works well! Typically you want to double up, though, because otherwise your ability coverage will be spotty and weird.

Another type reduce the cooldown of your Tactical Team. Others reduce your Emergency Power to X ability cooldowns. There's even one type that makes your gravity well occasionally spawn more gravity wells! Some neat things in exchange.

Just be careful not to buy the wrong faction's doff. Red outline = KDF.

Rare can still be ridiculous costs. I remember when I was looking at cannon doffs rares were tens of millions, though that might have changed in the new beampocalypse.

Just add a little on duty officers:

Technicians: For Aux2bat: generally you want 3 and are great any time you have more engie Boff slots than Tac. Basically allow you to run one ability and keep it up almost constantly without doubly it up. Plus VR Techs doffs are free from a Crit on the support assignment unlocked from the B'tran colony chain.

Conn: Tac team reducing officers. Slot 2 VR and you can run one Tac Team and keep it up constantly. If your not doing Aux2bat these are great just because of how cheap they are on the exchange

Damage Control Engineer: Chance to reduce cool down on Emergency power to X abilities. Slot 2 VR and you can get away with not having to double up to Emergency power to X to keep them up full time. Great if you don't have the engie boff slots and doesn't dump aux like Aux2bat. The problem is it's random chance so it doesn't proc all the time. Can be expensive on the exchange.

If your not doing Aux2bat 2 VR Conn tac team reducing and 2 VR DCE nice foundation for builds. Especially for science ships and when you want to use the Nukara Traits with the offensive and defensive boost based on Aux power.

All these doffs are great for allowing you to get away with keeping a boff power up without having to have 2 copies. Makes a lot of ships viable that wouldn't be otherwise.

If you've been out of the game for a while, they've changed and added a lot of shit. Not surprising that it sounds like the regular players are talking an entirely different language.
Boff is shorthand for Bridge Officers. Like you said, they're the ones who give you extra powers like cramming 4 torpedoes into a single tube.
Doff is shorthand for Duty Officers, you get these in a variety of ways after you hit 11. With Doffs you can assign them to ship duties where they'll contribute to the running of your ship. Depending on which Doff you assign where, they'll beam down stuff to help you on away missions, some will give you bonuses to recharge rate or boost damage. Kind of a new kind of ship equipment.
Doffs can also be assigned away missions, you lose them from your ship for a certain amount of time and when they come back, they'll bring you goodies.

If you haven't played in a while, it may be worth your time to start a new character so you can relearn all the old crap and how it interfaces with the new crap. Plus, you can start out as a Romulan. Who doesn't love green ships that set other ships on fire in space? Plasma is the way, the light, and the glorious, glorious burninantion.
