Daily projects for rep are what you want to be doing, Hourlies are a waste of resources
Down the bottom of each R&D tree is a research project for a lot of xp, you can run I think 3 of these at once, assuming you have enough of the right doff (research lab scientist iirc)
Yeah, I already figured out hourlies are not a good idea. But is there any reason not to run as many dailies for different reps as you can, concurrently?

If you can get the marks for it, running every single daily you can is the best thing to be doing, its a lot of "free" dilithium and also the traits you get from each tier are very useful. One thing I would say is that the Discovery rep is particularly good for gear, and has good traits so should be a priority if you can, Gamma rep is also excellent trait wise and Competitive is not good with the exception of the engines which can be useful (get the engineering variant, even though the tactical one looks better)

Ah, good to know, thanks. Having run a bunch of Omega TFO’s back in the day, I’ve got about 600 Omega marks to burn, and about the same in Romulan and Dyson marks. So kicked those projects off!
ETA: the game is so, so bad at explaining these systems.

It's not helped by the fact that you can hit level 50 or so before you're even done with the Romulan stuff so nowhere near where you're actually getting marks/relevant stuff to connect the dots. Every other week I see a post from someone on the reddit where they are all "oh I got this FREE SHIP, where do I find it so I can fly my FREE SHIP" and every single time it's because they got a 1x use card for the Admiralty system
I legitimately still don’t understand how to progress R&D. I mean, I can keep making type X beams for, if not ever, a while, but it’s tedious because I have to build every component for them, too.
And the rewards for doing so are unclear (MK2 gear I think, but again, the game neglects to mention this).
And it looks like Research Scientist doffs help with this, but who knows when I’ll find one of those.
There's a project that takes one common material and gives fairly high exp, use that to level and only actually craft things you want or can sell.
Rewards: higher mk and quality options and better success rates. Better upgrade packs unlock up to level 10, and some unique items at level 15. Level 20 is just rate improvements.

R&D is only really worth it for a handful of specific traits that you get for levelling a school to lvl 15. Science is probably worth doing but they are not amazing All the gear is BOE as well, so if you want one of those nice plasma particle emisson torpedoes (which are great) you can just buy one. You are correct that you'll want to get some research scientist doffs, check the exchange, they may be fairly cheap. Alternatively you might be able to buy some for dilithium, but I wouldn't recommend this.
There is also a daily quest on the fleet research lab that will give you some bonus R&D xp.

Absolutely do not try to progress R&D by crafting. At the bottom of every school there's an assignment to do research; do that every 20 hours, fill every slot you can.
You can find Research Scientists on the exchange, under Duty Officers - Science. Even common white quality ones will suffice for this.
Summer event is live. Apparently it's all one of my characters does because she was still parked there from last year. It's wonderful to have a relaxing event rather than "do annoying TFO for 20 days straight".

Getting one of the really fast and really maneuverable jetpacks a while back was the best thing, I always forget how speedy they are.
Does the Risa event contribute to the Event Campaign? Or is it a separate thing?
I don't see it listed on the Event Campaign, but I didn't want to skip it and find out I lost my ship reward.

Risa's its own separate thing, but as Strikor says above, it's pretty much the easiest thing in the game. A few minutes each day to take part in one of several non-combat mini-games and you're done.
Still pottering along all the many, many episodes I haven’t done yet. Hit the Solanae Dyson thread. Which means I now have access to MACO/Romulan/Solanae reps.
Is any of the rep project gear actually useful? The requisition gear seems…meh. I seem to remember the MACO ground set was a beast back in the day, but if something in those reps is the new meta, lmk.
Looks like I’m about to open up the Undine rep, too.
There’s a lot of good gear from various rep projects. The Mudd’s Time Device kit module from Discovery Legends is a personal favourite, improved cooldown on all other kit modules and if you die while it’s buff is active you’re automatically teleported back to where you first activated it at full health. As far as ground and space sets, a lot of them are good for different builds, although some are outshone by stuff from limited time events.

The main thing to do is see if you can pick a flavour for what you want to do, particularly with a ship, so for example if you wanted to go for a Disruptor loadout, there's support for that in the Terran rep, a bit in the Undine, several sets from quests and also, if you're using beams, Tier 6 in the Romulan rep has a variant weapon that's very nice.
A significant number of ships these days use 2 bits of the Discovery rep equipment, usually the shield and something else, because the 2 piece bonus is a massive boost to Hull Regen
If you're feeling brave and not worried about being overwhelmed, the wiki set page ( https://sto.fandom.com/wiki/Set ) is worth looking at to see what each rep provides gearwise in more or less one place.
Is there still a Fleet that's active around here? I decided to reinstall (haven't played in maybe 6+ years?) and am having a blast but wouldn't mind having people to bounce questions off of in game!

There’s a few people who pop up and help me be Less Bad, but (I think!) no active fleet per se.
There's a PA fleet, and I have an alt or two in it, but the person who's currently leader isn't actually from the forums and has taken all the important permissions for themselves.

aha that's what happened
I did wonder why projects went completely in the shitter a while back
Some shiny New Ship Porn put up yesterday.
The Courage-class Command Science Destroyer
This ship is normally a Science focused, but when you push the button it switches to a more tactical layout, changing the active bridge stations.
Transformation - Tactical Mode
The Courage-class utilizes a unique directional matrix to allow the ship to quickly transfer its functionality between being focused on Science and Research, and being a resilient Destroyer. The ship's default configuration is outfitted for scientific pursuits, but it can be quickly reconfigured on the fly by switching into Tactical Mode.
When this transformation is initiated, the ship's orientation will be reversed. The ship's Shield Systems will lose integrity while this power is instead rerouted to Hull Integrity (-Shield Capacity, +Hull Capacity). Access to Sensor Analysis, Subsystem Targeting, and the ship's Secondary Deflector Dish will be disabled, while the Experimental Weapon becomes available.
Enables Tactical Mode:
Upgrades Lt. Commander Tactical/Command station to Commander Tactical/Command
Enables Experimental Weapon
+20% Maximum Hull Capacity
Disables Science Mode:
Downgrades Commander Science/Command station to Lt. Commander Science/Command
Disables Secondary Deflector, Sub-System Targeting, and Sensor Analysis
-20% Shield Capacity
Also has a fun defensive trait in Directional Bias. Get shot from the front 180 degree? You get stacks that add to exotic damage
When hit from the back? You get bonuses to hull regen and healing abilities.
PSA: Peril Over Pahvo is available as a private queue if you (like me) can't be bothered to actively run the same boring TFO for 3 weeks straight during the event. The debrief isn't even any different when it's a total disaster.
Ok, this is just a stock Tripple-D with a unique starburst paint job, and that's kind of boring on its own. But from a licensing standpoint this is one of the most interesting ships. This ship, fitting the lore description as being captured by the Garidians (another Vulcan Sundering offshoot) appeared in the video game TNG: Final Unity. The timeline is shifted a bit (happening in the aftermath of Shinzon's coup rather than Sela's) but the story is relatively intact.
Scimitar variant: Adapted Scimitar
Mostly the assimilated Scimitar from the Borg STF's, but without the partial sphere frame on the upper hull, making it look more like the Narada-derived lockbox ships.
Tell you what, the Pahvo ground TFO turned out to be a great place to try out my new Risan kit and modules. That ball lightning absolutely wrecks clumps of Terrans. Being Choice of Marks, it’s also handy as a one stop shop while I figure out the rep system again. And I can run one over lunch.
In less useful things I’ve done: saw there was an upgrade weekend, thought it started today, burned some upgrades, was sad.
I did buy some garbage DOffs to start the wrap up open projects in my fortress of solitude.
Just a heads up, i added/promoted one of my alts in the PA fleet.
I just did the same (invoting) for one of my characters. Thanks to currently rewatching TNG, this got me interested in checking out what has changed since the last time I played... a few years now?
Edit: Wow it’s rough trying to pick up where I left off. I just need to push through since I definitely dont want to start from scratch.
Edit2: Actually, looks like I'll start a new KDF character since that can unlock cross faction ships if I manage to get to lvl 65. The Klingon character is Mika@swphreak if someone in the Klingon Fleet is still around.

Is this why there are suddenly people on the roster in what was previously apparently my Fortress of Solitude? (Hi @Mordrack !)
How exciting!
Guess I'd better stop dumping stuff in the fleet bank...sorry about that. I thought I was alllooooone.
I'm going back to my KDF character from 2012 once I finally finish the episode arcs on my Fed, and wrap up Tier V reps, but still have a while to go. The Delta arc is quite big, it turns out, though I'm already sick of the comically evil Vaadwuur and their silly spelling.
After many weeks of carefully considering how to address the dilithium exchange issue, Cryptic has decided to move endeavour and admiralty rerolls to the dilithium store for 2500 each and remove them from the reward pools. I have a sneaking suspicion that not many people are going to buy zen for real money to exchange for dilithium to exchange for the ability to reroll Complete 3 Borg TFOs to Complete 3 Lukari TFOs.
Admiralty rerolls are meaningless, if you have the task force to churn through missions the occasional 100/120/100 mission isn't an obstacle, and if you don't then it's even less of one because you're only running a couple at a time and you can throw shuttles at impossible ones to clear them out.
Endeavor rerolls might get people. Endeavor perks are big rewards and the max point club will definitely do rerolls to stay on the edge, and I can see a lot of people dropping 2500 dilithium to get rid of an asinine purple daily. A lot of people have dilithium to burn, which is the whole problem with the exchange.

Temporal Recruitment RE-Run starts September 8th, allegedly on all platforms but lol cryptic news blogs
We’ve updated the Temporal Agent goals to include some new ones, and removed goals from missions that are no longer in the game, so you don’t have to worry about finding Temporal Probes in places that you can no longer reach. You’ll be able to earn bonuses for reaching level 60, marks for all of the reputations that have been added to the game, and rewards for engaging in R&D and specializations.
Existing Temporal Agents will be able to complete these new goals as well, and if you’ve already finished them, you can claim the rewards immediately.
Note for newer players, this one is really, really worth doing (at least get the device at the start to get you on the track) as the key reward is an automatic account wide boost of rep gear starting at MK13, UR, which is an enormous timesaver.
I believe that one also gave the Paradox Corrector, which is a *seriously* OP ground device that heals everybody on your team by 50%, resurrects dead party members to 50%, and can be used while you yourself are dead. Paradox Corrector+Red Angel+Medical Nanite Cloud might as well be god mode for how much you can shrug off and it's a clinch saver for STF bosses that reset on a wipe (not that there's many of those).
