Welcome to the Nintendo 3DS thread!
MCJjd.jpg

Behold the New Nintendo 3D!

XOqSzL0l.jpg

The "New Nintendo 3DS" has been announced. Short, but sweet details below:

Slimmer design

Faster CPU

Wider field of view for 3D

Micro SD Card slot

Better quality screens
new Nintendo 3DS has custom faceplates (the XL does not)

And here's a quick video to prove it.

This is the thread for general 3DS discussion. To keep the conversation from getting too busy, try to look for other threads before posting about something in here. For example, the eShop Thread is a good place to talk about Nintendo digital store. Big game releases like Mario Kart or Zelda also tend to have their own threads. There's no hard rule against discussing those games in here, but this is a nice place to talk about smaller titles that would be unable to sustain their own threads, and obviously those larger games can easily crowd everyone else out. Finally, don't be discouraged from making game-specific threads if you feel it warrants attention. This is sort of a catch-all thread.

Free games via Club Nintendo:

Nintendo is now allowing players to buy download games for their Wii, DSi, and 3DS via the Club Nintendo website. All first party games, and some third party titles, offer codes that you can enter on the official Nintendo website. Fill out a survey and earn coins (and an additional follow-up survey for extra coins). The coins can buy a variety of posters, cases, and various neat stuff. But the games are where it's at. Every month, Nintendo is offering up four games to download.

Featured Applications:

Nintendo Video: A free download app that randomly adds short 3D movies to watch. Blue Man Group, College Humor, and Dreamworks have all contributed.
Netflix: Link your account to your 3DS to watch (2d) movies on the small screen.
Hulu Plus: Just like Netflix, link your account to watch TV shows on the go.
3D movie recording: Record up to 10 minutes of 3D footage and upload it to youtube.
Game demos: Download demos of upcoming 3DS releases.
System Transfer: Transfer information from an existing DS, DSi, or 3DS to a 3DS. Great for when the inevitable redesign hits the scene.
A full list of additional built-in software can be found on Nintendo's 3DS site.

Other final things to do/know as a 3DS owner:

    New thread for New 3DS?

I played a few levels of Kid Icarus Uprising and I'm not sure how I put up with the controls long enough to finish it the first time. It sure isn't suited to playing for long stretches of time.

If you ask me, 2014 hasn't been a great year for the 3DS so far. Compared to 2013, anyway. But feel free to take that as a challenge and list a bunch of games.

Well okay I'll throw Curtain Call in the ring even though I haven't played it yet.

Smash Bros and new Pokémon is enough for me to call it a great year.

Is there really so little on the horizon? I mean, you can add Fantasy Life and the Ruby and Sapphire remakes to that list as well, but it's still quite small

Honestly, Nintendo could just release Pokémon and SSB and that would be enough. I mean, those will last the rest of the year for me.

Speaking of new games for the 3DS, I just started Layton/Phoenix Wright last night. I wonder where in the Layton games this falls. Obviously after the Azran Quadrilogy and possibly after the Curious Village.

So after Curious Village and before Diabolical Box. That works, I'll just assume it falls there.

Pokemon is the one game that we don't wait until birthdays/holidays to pick up. My son and I preorder them somewhere and spend the next few weeks devouring them, trying to see who can finish the story mode first. It's become a tradition in our house since he was old enough to play - I did White/2/Y, he did Black/2/X. I think I'm Sapphire this time. On X and Y he finished 20 minutes before me so I have to beat him this time.

If you're looking for a surprisingly good strategy game, get Squids Odyssey. I recently played the 3DS version and found it to be quite a bit of fun. It's a story of squids fighting against some infectious goop that makes other sea life bad. Charming look and goofy style, very kid friendly, and not too heavy on the strategy so you won't worry about pulling out hair. A fun action/rpg mash-up that flew by everyone's radar.

Seriously, look it over, it is quite fun and SUPER long.

Recently updated the router at home. Due to work reasons, the router has to be set up on a WPA secure access, which it turns out there are no workarounds for.

This means my 3DS can no longer access the net for stuff like digital downloading, unless I reset my router to WEP.

Anyone have any ideas on this? Other than the obvious reset, I mean? Its also super frustrating that due to Nintendos lack of investment in technology, the consumer really suffers for it. Not that it hasn't been the case for the last 3-4 generations of consoles.

Interestingly enough, the first Advance Wars actually had a tactician who was represented by the player character. The COs even talked to you as though you were a part of the team. I was kind of bummed they ditched that for later titles - they don't even acknowledge that you ever existed.

I like to think that it's because your character was court martialed and eventually imprisoned or executed as a scapegoat for all of the casualties incurred by the first War, and they don't like to talk about you.

Huh? The 3DS supports WPA. Even DSi supports WPA though most DS games did not.

The 3DS supports WPA. It's the original DS that only works with WEP.

    I would say so.

If it's not it's coming soon, they posted to miiverse about it.

Good. Hopefully they price it reasonably. For some reason, I can't bring myself to buy physical if it's incomplete, and a complete copy of CS3D is too expensive. Hell, even the cartridge-only prices are more than I'd want to spend on this game.

    Looking at Amazon now
    cartridge: $29
    w/ case & manual: $64
    & the slip cover: $79

It's about time for a new strategy game for the 3DS dammit. Give me an Advance Wars, a Fire Emblem, some kind of Pikmin game, an FFT style game, whatever.

Code Name STEAM is coming out next year, which should be pretty great.

Also @MNC Dover‌ Persona Q is coming out in November, you can add that to the list in the OP.

Also Bravely Second I guess, which is all but guaranteed to get a western release, given its sales numbers.
