@McFlynn - no worries, I too loooove my WiiU. I'm so fond of the gamepad I can't even tell you.
And at first I found it odd you didn't thin DS/3ds had a lot off games, then my very thought was "he must not like RPGs." =p
I love Chrono Trigger and Paper Mario. But thats about it. I need like, 1 RPG per system. Tops.
Got up and went to my nearest Gamestop about 15 minutes after they opened. Clerk tells me straight up that they only got enough units for pre-orders (and said there were about five people waiting in front of the store before it opened anyway). He calls a couple nearby Gamestops to confirm that they're also sold out.
Feeling defeated I head to the nearest Best Buy to see if I would luck out on the Majora's Mask LE. I did not, but I did get the last copy of the regular version and saved 20% with GCU. They had a few systems left so I was planning to nab one when I decided to double check and call a few more Gamestops.
I ended up finding a Gamestop near the mall, 15 minutes away, to which they respond "Oh yeah, we've got plenty of extras besides pre-order."
I made a beeline to that Gamestop and nabbed a red model. I then asked about using the system transfer in the store. They seemed unaware of how the process worked or that Gamestop was even allowing it, but they gave the okay and provided the WiFi to both handhelds for the transfer process.
On the first try, the systems got as far as the final step in transferring data only to get an error message. I forced a restart and tried again. And again. And a third time. Much of the problems were attributed to one or both handhelds losing the internet connection partway.
After around the fifth try, the damn thing finally transferred, indicating that I could then swap out the microSD card from the old 3DS and use it on the New 3DS. The next hurdle was unscrewing the back. The screwdriver I had would technically fit, but didn't have enough strength to unhinge the screws. Fortunately the Gamestop employee had a utility knife that was able to fit between the screws, giving it that initial push that I could then proceed to unscrew the screws with my screwdriver.
This was another hassle that lasted about ten minutes. For the record, you're not supposed to actually take the screws out....you're only supposed to turn them until you hear a "click", and then prop open the back of the 3DS (you can use your fingernails). Once that was done, I inserted the microSD card, and thankfully everything transferred successfully.
The whole process took about an hour and a half in the store. Between the account activation and physically unscrewing the system, this ranks up among the biggest hassles I've had to put up with regarding Nintendo. Fortunately the people there were friendly and patient, and remarked along with me how dumb this whole thing was.
I'm debating whether to open my copy of MM now or wait to see if Best Buy restocks the LE.
Not one best buy in my area had a Majora's Mask edition of the console this morning. So I grabbed the black one (it's like, carbon fiber almost. Looks so nice) and Majora's. System transfer is happening now!
Also, put in a 32gb SD card. Getting the back off was tricky. The manual suggests using the back of the stylus, and I do too. It worked really well!
edit: My best buy only had 5 systems not on preorder too.
Is anyone here NOT getting the N3DS? You guys are fanatical and I love you all for it.
After a quick chat with the wife (aka sugar mama) we decided we did not have to upgrade to systems that we only have two games apiece for. We just don't portable game much, but we wanted them because we had quite a few NDS games and those were showing their age. Maybe Nintendo's next next handheld will interest us more, but we just got ours in December of 2013.

I'm not, but it's not by my own choice. I want this guy here:
But Nintendo won't allow me to purchase it. If it was announced in the January Direct, I would have placed a pre-order at Best Buy the moment they went up, and it'd be in my hands by now.
But Nintendo isn't allowing their North American customers to purchase the hardware for whatever asinine reason they've cooked up. I don't care for the XL-sized variant, and I refuse to force myself to purchase one just for the handful of features it offers over my current 3DS.
Call me cynical but if Nintendos past track record is any indication, we've got 2 years at most until they launch the successor to the 3DS. I love the eye tracking and improved load times but I struggle to justify the purchase.
For me it's just the love of new and shiny tech. About 18 months ago I sold my Flame Red 3DS and picked up a Midnight Purple 3DS just so I can have a new color to look at for a while.

I'm with @maximumzero. The screen on the 3ds was pathetically small. The XL improves this (at the cost of pixel density), but it's not super-comfortable to hold for long sessions, either. I was really hoping the n3ds would be a good middle ground, but as of right now, I'll never get to hold one and find out.
So I was hoping that by finally updating from my DS Lite that I'd be able to use my DS games with WPA protected WiFi but it appears not be the case. I guess DS games only ever supported WEP even on the DSi. I thought one of the biggest selling points of the DSi was that it supported WPA. I guess just not for actual games. Glad I never bought one of those. Enjoying Smash Bros and Alpha Sapphire a ton so far though.
I've decided that Nintendo just doesn't want my money. Said fuck it and wanted to buy a n3DS because the 3D tracking tech impressed me at pax, and monster hunter looks like garbage on the old 3DS after looking at comparison screens. Every store in fucking philadelphia is sold out of every model. Can't buy consoles, can't buy their figurines, how is this a real problem in 2015.
I mean, I know why, because they do it on purpose. But I'm really sick of Nintendo's shit right now.

From who? It's sold out everywhere. edit: because like all things, nintendo made 8 of them and said ok, that's finished for the month then.

The New 3DSXL selling out at retailers doesn't bode well for those of us that want the New Nintendo 3DS.
I'm sure Nintendo is looking at this and patting themselves on the back that they right the right decision about only offering the New Nintendo 3DSXL.
"It's selling so well retailers can't keep it in stock!"

The wifi support in DS games? It's literally on the cartridge. There's no way to update the firmware on those old games, short of something like those insane hot patching shenanigans they use to enable home brew.
Or maybe Nintendo getting off their butt and releasing updated versions of the games in the eShop.
Man, I'm normally the guy criticizing Nintendo in these threads, but if you're familiar with consumer electronics at all, you should know it's pretty naive to think you can just walk into any store on launch day and pick one up. This is not a Nintendo thing, this is a "shiny new gadget" thing.
When I went into Gamestop to pick up my preorder, they had a drawer just full of N3DS systems. There were easily 20 systems in there, and that's not counting all the ones that were picked up before I got there. Of course, they were all for reservations, because that's what you need to do if you want the gadget on launch day. So fuck off saying that Nintendo didn't ship any consoles just because you didn't get one.

This is a bit of a moot point these days because the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection is long dead.

Every store around here got 5 or less. The gamestop near my work didn't get a single one, and the huge target said they got 3. In a city of millions of people.
Seeing as this is a super staggered launch and the product has been available in other countries for ages, there are very few excuses for this.

Huh, if they had announced the non-XL new 3DS and not the XL I wouldn't have purchased it. Downgrading the screen size is just not an option to me and I actually have a hard time wrapping my head around why someone would take the smaller one.

Debatable.
