This is a thread for all things Metal Gear Solid, but spoilers might abound for Metal Gear Solid V! Try to keep Ground Zeroes plot in spoilers (and relevant Peace Walker ones that directly tie into Ground Zeroes).

Once upon a time, there was a soldier who was really freaking awesome at his job. He was big, he was stealthy, he was a boss.

Like all awesome heroes he prevented a nuclear war, twice, got tortured a lot, and pissed off just about everyone. Then he went rogue. Obviously the best way to deal with a rogue agent is to develop a super soldier program based on his DNA, and so the Sons of Big Boss were born.

This being the 80s, David AKA Solid Snake, hunted down his tragically evil father and killed him (sort of). Sadly, Snake's problems were just beginning, as the A.I. Illuminati his father fought took over the world in his absence. With the help of an anime nerd, a hot gunslinger lady, a war orphan cyborg, and a little girl hacker, the world was saved... but for how long?

This, is METAL GEAR SOLID. Pioneer of tactical espionage action, long cutscenes, and really fun gameplay.

Hideo Kojima Interview regarding the HD Collection:
PlayStation.Blog: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was designed for PSP — a portable device. What changes did Kojima Productions make to the upcoming PS3 version so it could be enjoyed on a high-definition home console?
Hideo Kojima, Director, Kojima Productions: The PSP obviously has fewer buttons than the PS3 controller, and it had some limitations when it comes to control. Using the DualShock 3, movement of many things improved…as did, of course, [the addition of] rumble support.
On the PSP, it was also hard to tell some textures apart. Now, rendered in HD, they are much easier to see. The in-game text is also easier to read.

PSB: Your process of “transfarring” will allow PSP players to take their Peace Walker save files from one console to another, and we will also see similar cross-play support with the PS Vita and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Is this the future of gaming, and would you like to explore beyond what already has been announced?
Kojima: Peace Walker is the first step. It is a PSP game in HD that lets one go back and forth between one PSP and a PSP. The next step is to take PS2-quality games, such as Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, to HD and then to take them to Vita transfarring.
My next step is games that will come out for the PS3 from now on, so I can take advantage of this technology with the Vita with content that is exactly the same. I hope that cloud service is available now, and it would be ideal for me if transfarring were to serve as a bridge between the two services.

PSB: Just before E3, a glimpse of what will be its new graphic engine (FOX Engine) was shown. What would you say are their greatest visual benefits? Is there anything that stands out in this technology that you can tell us about?
Kojima: For now, FOX Engine has high performance in developing games on multiple platforms; I think that is the most prominent feature. At this point, it is not an engine that has anything particularly prominent when compared to what’s on the market. From now on, we hope to add features and functions that stand out from other engines.

PSB: Okay, PS Vita has already been revealed. Are you interested in the console? What are the features that draw your attention most to a portable device?
Kojima: As for the multitouch pad on the back of the console, I do not want to force users to use it. The PS Vita has cutting-edge technology and it’s the best there is – especially with integration with the PS3 – and I am very pleased I can offer it to users.

PSB: With the commercial success of L.A. Noire, and the return of cyberpunk with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, do you believe that there is a market for a new Snatcher game?
Kojima: L.A. Noire is a game that I really like, but unfortunately I have not played it. I think it is coming out in Japan today, so when I return, I intend to play it. This idea of an open world in 3D is very good, and I would love to do something like Snatcher, but I do not have the time or the means to do so. But if anyone else would like to develop it, I would love it.
NOTE: A few hours after this interview, Hideo Kojima, in collaboration with Suda 51 and Akira Yamaoka, announced a radio drama called “Sdatcher” based on Snatcher.

PSB: What qualities do you think a game designer needs to be hired in today’s industry?
Kojima: Right now, it’s very similar to movies: You need a lot of money. So rather than doing what you want, doing what you like, you must have a clear idea of marketing and sales. That’s what’s happening to us with FOX Engine; you do not need be an expert in programming to develop a game, but if you have a question, you still need an expert on-hand to provide an answer.
As for expression, that has reached a high level. Video games are trying to reach the peak of entertainment, so game makers should be clear that things like emotion and sound are among the many things that have to be involved.

PSB: How has your perspective from your business point of view and as a game developer changed, now that you are Vice President of Konami Digital?
Kojima: I would like to not change. My priority continues to be to create and produce my own games. Now that I can do this well, I can generate more time to help in other company products, especially in creative ways.

Leagacy collection on PS is probably your best bet if you can find it for a reasonable price. If not grab MGS from PSN then get the HD collection and 4.

Also watching Metal Gear Scanlon on Giant Bomb recently has really made me want to play the series again, especially seeing as how I've had 4 for ages but never played it.

A Metal Gear thread to surpass Metal Gear....

So cap. That hypothetical captain might get his self a MGS Legacy Collection (on the PS3 only) It's all of the games!

You should start at Metal Gear Solid for the PS1. It's also available on the PSN as a digital download, but a hard copy is p.easy to come by. Then MGS2 and 3 for the PS2, and MGS4 for the PS3.

MGS2 and 3 are best played via their HD releases included in the Legacy Collection or the MGS HD Collection (which is available on X360!)

Once you've got through 1-4, there's a prequel spinoff thing called Peace Walker. Ground Zeroes is a direct sequel to it! It's a portable game, and structured very differently, and it's not essential to play before jumping into Ground Zeroes, but it is included in the Legacy and HD Collections, so give it a shot!

    So MGS1>MGS2>MGS3>MGS4>PW>GZ>The Wait for PP.

Chronologically the games are all over the place, but release order is the way to go.

And miles to go before I sleep.

I had a friend who literally blasted through Peace Walker in the last two weeks, though he hasn't played through MGS4 yet. It was interesting because
when Paz started talking about Cipher he immediately joined the dots and figured that Zero was responsible for founding the Patriots, and that they were based on the Philosophers in the Wiseman's Committee as a false lead

So, I've been playing through Peace Walker after picking up Ground Zeroes on sale and figuring I'd like to know how Big Boss got to that point. I'm loving the game so far. I've gotten to where you fight
Peace Walker after escaping from your cell
and I've been thinking it would be a lot more fun playing with other people. Does anyone here still play on the 360? My gamertag is Nitsua16 XFORCE and I'd love to have some backup or someone to help make the bosses go by faster. I haven't tried to fight the boss I made it up to yet, but I've been
fighting the other AIs for spare parts for Zeke
. Anyone feel like jumping in just send me a message. I'll be playing most of the rest of today.

So, related to getting an octopus on the team, what the fuck is up with Quiet, eh?
She can turn totally invisible huh? And slips out of her handcuffs no prob, via her skin disappearing. And she inks up some warpaint on her face when she gets mad?

She's closer to Decoy Octopus than Wolf IMO.

Kojima can finally do the things he wanted to, now that the hardware has evolved
Snake has lost weight, they say
You can choose your own routes during the missions
Quiet can assist you during gameplay with the buddy system
You can choose where the helicopter sets you down
Riding your horse is hard in the jungle environment
Snake is ‘naked’, Miller tells him they are making a new suit at Mother Base
The new suit is delivered to Snake
You can climb walls with cracks
The climbing section seen in the demo is a shortcut, you can also go around through the jungle
Snake is wearing a different arm prothesis in the demo
You’ll be able to use different protheses with different functions
There will be a lot of different protheses according to Kojima
You can set up a talking decoy. He has a lot of lines, including ‘Kept you waiting, huh?’ and ‘You’re pretty good!’
Snake calls in Quiet and orders her to scout up ahead
Quiet can also provide cover fire
When she is in position, she hums
    She marks enemies during reconnaissance
If you speed up the time too much, the POW target dies
By hovering the reticle, you can select Quiet’s target
Snake throws a grenade and orders Quiet to shoot it
Quiet has a weakness that will tie into the story, and also into the way she is dressed
Quiet’s abilities depend on the degree of her bond with Snake
In the demo, the attacks commands were: shoot, target and wait for my signal, shoot this, and provide/cease cover fire
However, a lot has to happen for all these options to be available (bond degree)
If the bond isn’t high enough, Quiet won’t come with you
When Snake uses the ‘pin radar’, all the icons represent animals, but it reacts to people as well
You can analyze soldiers to see their statistics, like in Peace Walker
The binoculars can be upgraded by through R&D
Another interrogation option is asking: ‘Where are your friends?’
Snake’s can stun enemies with his arm, it packs 1.2 million volts
According to Kojima, you may never meet Quiet. It depends on how you play through the game.
Snake can also jump out of the chopper while it’s in the air… but it would kill him

Kojima once again talked about the themes of Metal Gear Solid V: Race, conflict, the cycle of revenge, and war. “Snake and Kaz are hungry for revenge, Ocelot is more neutral.”
The buddy system (taking Quiet or DD the wolfdog with you) is optional, you can play the game alone.
You’ll be able to accept new missions without going back to Mother Base.
The sneaking suit is made of high-strength aramid fibers and has sound absorbing boots.
You will be able to develop weather modification technology.
A while ago, Kojima supposedly said he brought back a character he killed before. Now he clarified that he meant ‘a character killed off during planning’. So not a character that was dead in the story, but one that wasn’t in the story before.
If you clear Ground Zeroes you’ll get something ‘really cool’ in The Phantom Pain.
Kojima: ‘The Phantom Pain is nearing completion after 5 years.’ He said he wants it to stand up to the best in the world. It is the game he wanted to make 27 years ago.
    On the Fox Engine:
The Fox Engine has facilitated multiplatform development. It also reduced development costs by 1/5.
The engine’s editor lets the level designers do about 80% of their work by themselves. They can now do things without having to ask programmers

Both the horse and the dog (DD) can die. This goes for AI buddies in general, so even Quiet can meet this fate.
Once your buddies are dead, they’re dead for good. This won’t affect the main plot though.
As said before, you can beat the game without meeting Quiet at all, and the same goes for the dog. But meeting them opens up whole sub-plots.
During the missions you can bring more than one buddy. There are four seats on the chopper aside the one for Snake.
Ocelot was a buddy at some point, but at the moment he isn’t. He may or may not become a buddy.
Kojima: “What Snake and his men go through in TPP is painful. Very painful.”
“The concept behind Quiet was nudity. A naked sniper.” Kojima also reiterated the reason behind the way she looks will surprise us. But no, she isn’t Chico, as Kojima confirmed.

The "Chico is Quiet" theory has to be the single dumbest I've read in a very long time. I keep hoping it's meant to be a bad joke taken too far.

I don't know what it is about MGS fans that they have to come up with completely baseless "X is Y character" theories seemingly pulled from their collective asses. Remember when "Raiden is Sunny" was a thing during Rising's development?

Different dialogue codec if quiet is found and the dog is found.
Weapon of quiet if she dies and you have the dog to go get it.

    Etcetera.

I'm gonna have to play this game a million times, aren't I.

Ugh, the amount of permutations to get different dialogue, cut scenes and small weapons or items just increased by about a billion now that buddies can die.

That reminds me of the Metal Gear Scanlon videos on Giant Bomb (go watch them!), where I'm learning for the first time just how much cutscenes change based on your actions in the original MGS.

I already knew of some differences, like if Snake already has a gun when he meets Meryl, or if you kill a bunch of birds before encountering Vulcan Raven. What I didn't know was how they even had cutscenes to account for your performance in boss fights. I never did bad enough against Ocelot to have him trigger the "you're not ready to face the boss yet!" dialogue Drew got in his playthrough.

That enormous amount of missable dialog and content was something I felt had been severely downplayed in the last couple Metal Gear games. I'm hoping MGSV is just crazy packed with stuff that will take years to discover.

Missing? In MGS3, you could kill a boss before you even knew he was a boss!

I meant from MGS4 and onward, actually.

I haven't replayed MGS4 since I beat it the first time, but that game still strikes me as the most linear and least feature-filled of the MGS games.

Anyone gotten back and played the older MGS games recently?

When I nabbed the MGS HD Collection I thought I was going to be completely done with it by now.

But with MGS2, a game I used to play extensively during the PS2 days, I am routinely fucking up. Specifically, I can't get past the part after you fight Solidus for the first time; I never had an issue with this before, but I'm just constantly getting spotted or falling to my death.

Maybe if I spent some time on the VR training I'll get back some of those lost skills.

So, I haven't played Peace Walker in a while (badly scratched copy, been meaning to pick up another one), but was there really a good reason for BB to keep that nuke? One of Paz's tapes in GZ points out that they want to use it as a nuclear deterrent but they can't announce it out of fear of painting a target on their heads (and we see how well that works in GZ). But since deterrence only works when the other party knows you have nuclear capabilities, their gambit doesn't really make any sense

I guess a Metal Gear without nuclear capability isn't really the full package; I mean, the whole point of having one is that you can launch a missile from "any terrain". But what would MSF possibly do with a single nuke? Benefits didn't really seem to outweigh the risks

Mayhaps they considered the hypothetical to be to deter a military incursion as the resulting loss of life from launching would outweigh the risks of leaving them alone, but yeah they didn't quite think that one out I guess
