I've only seen the side ops mission so far but doesn't Snake speak perfect Russian? Why would he need an interpreter?
I don't have a source handy, but the story point I heard was that after his accident he lost his language abilities. Partial amnesia or something? I'll try and find where I read that at.
Given the trailer's recent focus on language, what sounded like a somewhat goofy way to make your intel team valuable now sounds like a big story/gameplay integration.
Note that the translator character had his skill listed as "Translator (Russian)" It would be interesting if they had a variety of enemy languages being spoken and you needed a translator for each.
Also, I don't see the point in having any other helicopter songs when they have "The Final Countdown," because that's clearly the best.

Oh, I think I vaguely remember hearing that now. Thanks for looking it up.
I really can't wait for this game. I'm gonna fulton everything, it's going to be Peace Walker x1000.

Or it's not Snake at all. Making it related to his accident seems too easy, given the game's focus on themes about language and words.

I mean, maybe? I don't put much past Kojima as far as misdirection, so the brain damage explanation could be just that. Personally, I think he just came up with a convenient story excuse to include a kind of cool game mechanic.

Personally I've always thought that Kojima would be frightening if he devised an RPG of some sort. Mechanics upon mechanics and choices and consequences are some of the craziest hallmarks of his work.

Not to mention Ocelot speaks Russian just fine, too...I'd guess it's more of a gamey fun thing than anything to take terribly seriously. Are all, we are talking about the game demonstration where your robot armed protagonist is hanging out with a dog with an eyepatch, a woman wearing pretty much nothing in wartime, and wherein you get new recruits by attaching them to a parachute that flings them back to your base.
Gamersyde have the 40 minute gameplay demo up in super high quality 1080p goodness. 8 gigs!
Also, watch out for the MGSV trophy/achievement list. It's leaked. Doesn't sound like there's too many spoilers in there but I figure, like me, most of you won't even want to risk it.
I think the biggest new impression this trailer gave was just how drastically a buddy's bonuses confer upon your mission. They're *all* useful, you get to pick which one is the MOST useful.

Most useful depending on the mission, I think you mean. DD would be pretty rubbish in an open environment, for example, but great within compounds where he can sniff out enemies around every corner. And Quiet's pretty much the opposite.
No second gameplay demo yet, Ratsult2. Hopefully within the next week but who knows with Kojima, he might make us wait another six weeks for Gamescom.
As a person who played MGS on PS1 and didn't care for it, getting Ground Zeroes from PS+ was a revelation. I've never enjoyed a stealth game like I've enjoyed Ground Zeroes. I think a lot of it is the controls. I've tried other MGS games including 4, but the controls always kept me from really enjoying them so I quit.
I'm planning on getting MGS5 and I've seen a few "the story so far" like things on YouTube, but is there an easy to understand recounting of the story of the MGS games? Perhaps something that also covers MGS5 in a "This happens after this but before this" kind of way?
Needless to say I'm ramping up on my MGS knowledge and that extended cinematic E3 trailer left me scratching my head, but the 40 minute demo just made me thirsty for more.

I'm not sure any summary can do the series' convoluted shit justice, but this is an excellent timeline article that lists the bare essentials to the chronology of the series.
The "movie"-edited game footage on YouTube is also a lot of fun to watch. (I watched KefkaProductions for that one :P)
EDIT: The Metal Gear Rising section is completely off, though, since that version of the game was axed. Rising Revengeance takes place post-MGS4

MGS1: Being a hero like Solid Snake is terrible, you have to deal with PTSD, watch your best friend die, fight your evil genetically engineered twin, and get infected with a biological WMD. Oh, and fight a walking nuclear tank. Play the original PS1 version if you can.
MGS2: Remember how you were that cool hero? Guess what? Now you're someone else! The story essentially deals with stopping an Illuminati-esque plot to direct human free will, masked around the events of several terrorist attacks. Digs heavily into the concept of, "what is a game sequel supposed to be?" with a lot of meta commentary. Still a fantastic game.
MGS3: So hey, we're going to flip things around and let you play as the traditional FINAL BOSS of the series and explain a lot of the back story that was left hanging from prior games. Get subsistence if you can.
MGS4: Know how we have all this crazy stuff in our games? Here's our attempt to reconcile it all, and provide a satisfactory ending for our heroes. Great gameplay, you'll get the most out of it if you want to see how the characters you've followed end up.
Peace Walker/MGS5: More adventures following the fall of Big Boss.
MGS 2: substance is also the story about how Solid Snake murders/tranqs me on the port side of deck 2.
My name is on the dog tags of one of those soldiers.
you were involved with the game? Or through coincidence? (pretty cool, either way)
When the game was in development Konami ran an online promotion where people submitted an application for them to include your name on dogtags. I was one of the lucky few to have gotten my application in before the cutoff.
This initiated a sequence where time slowed down, and I had just a few seconds to aim and try to tranquilize the enemy before he was able to call for backup. I missed, and he started to call backup. However, calling backup does take some time, so I was able to put him down while he was in the middle of this call. Once he was down, I waited around to see if any other soldiers answered his half-plea for help. Thankfully, only one enemy came, and I quickly took care of him.
Ha! Thanks for all the info. It sounds like I might be better off just going into it thinking this is the prequel to the original MGS games and concentrates on a badguy who's not really a bad guy. Then I can come back here for all the juicy speculation as to what the game means and what it reveals.
And thanks to @BRIAN BLESSED for the link. That was really informative and really complex. Since the games don't really take place in a linear timeline that makes it a bit harder to grasp. So is MGS5:TPP just kind of a side story then?

Since it isn't out yet, this is all just speculation, but TPP is presumed to fill in the gap between Peace Walker and Metal Gear 1.
Specifically, how Big Boss, the man who was "the perfect soldier," becomes disillusioned with the United States and becomes not just someone who wanted to have a mercenary nation-state on par with the world's nuclear powers but a bonafide bad guy... while also worming his way back into the US's good graces enough to create the Foxhound special forces unit.

Played MGS on PSX and liked it enough. Didn't get very far in 2 before giving up. The long and frequent cutscenes drove me up the wall. I've always admired the series from afar though, respected the ideas.
V though, looks just incredible. Like wow. It's making me think about giving the whole series another chance. Maybe now that I'm older I'll appreciate it more. Maybe. The legacy collection on PS3 is pretty darn cheap.
If you have a problem with long and frequent cutscenes, this ain't the franchise for you. But the games are amazing, and if you can get over that hurdle (or, like me, aren't bothered by them even though you are in every other game), you're in for a treat.
So....do it. I'm sure you've played shittier games in the past. (how's that for an endorsement?)

That's pretty much what MGSV is all about! Though Big Boss was originally pretty much a comic-book-like villain, they're trying to flesh him out as more of a tragic madman as he Descends Into Darkness to Fight The Man, or something. Direct mainline title that bridges all the prequel material to the very first Metal Gear games.
Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.
I'm wondering about the chances of Konami trying to keep cashing in on the MGS name after Kojima's departure, by doing a HD MGS collection of all the games
on the chance anyone hasn't seen them or would be interested, there's some interesting and occasionally pretty funny interviews out there with:

yeah that was one of the only things I didn't really like as far as the gameplay is looking. The mini-Metal Gear seemed the logical choice for when you want to just create chaos, not to play stealthily.
who am I kidding though, the only buddy I'll be using anyways is the eye-patch wolf. Hopefully he gets his own canine-themed cardboard box, too

They did a similar thing last year, except the second version was posted during Gamescom after E3
So if not now, probably then
Game of the year.
That would actually be a great idea if they worked on something.
Still, Silent Hills should have happened.

Good news, no insta-alarm like Ground Zeroes. Turn off reflex and the call delay would be plenty of time to prevent the alarm, I think.
