I don't know what I'll do if I don't get my Santee by November 1st!

Probably realize that Hypatia is very busy and appreciate all the hard work she puts into this year after year and wait patiently while participating in this thread and spreading the Christmas cheer.

I am full of so much excitement! This is the only time of year I love working retail. Christmas movies start tomorrow, music follows Monday, stalking Santee begins, start planning my Black Friday shopping, and prepare the menu since my family has passed the torch to me to cook a full Christmas dinner this year.

So i'm here for a little help =)

I'm a school teacher (Cisco Academy and CompTia A+ in Cuyahoga Falls, OH.) and every year i have my students do some kind of community service project. This year it occurred to me that Child's Play would be perfect for them! Our goal is to raise $1000 by the end of December and i'm here to solicit ideas!

If you can think of anything a group of around 40 high school students could do in order to achieve this goal i would i love to hear it. We have a ton of idea's bouncing around right now and the student's are genuinely excited to get this going. As always appreciate the help guys!

I thought I missed the boat but then I remembered I live in the glorious future and there was still time.

I regret not taking part basically every year, I'm always too worried I won't be able to come up with something good enough.

Did you adopt? That's awesome! All the excitement! Having been on the less, uhh, exciting side of that, you're a hero to me!

Nope, she just popped out at that age, bizarre!

...Yep, been going through the process in the UK for the last 2 years. It's taken absolutely ages but she's been with us about 3 weeks now and it feels like she's always been here.

As for presents, power tools appear to rate highly, so do PS4 controllers which she loves playing with (more fool me for letting her, I had the TV on and she was just playing with it, didn't realise she'd turned the PS4 on, when I switched inputs through random clicking she'd gone in to the store and managed to position the cursor over "Buy" on a £55 FIFA download).

But please, for the love of God, nothing, NOTHING to do with In the Night Garden. I see that show every single day and it's absolutely insane.

I am envious of those who feel they can pregift.

For me, nothing will bring me satisfaction until I craft a plan tailored to my target. That takes into account their past successes and frustrations, their unspoken wants.

Soon it will begin. I will summon my council, and strategies will be drafted. Then I will open one of my browser tabs, and begin to sing the song that brings merriment to others, and woe to my wallet.

IT MUST BEGIN SOON. THE SONG CALLS TO ME.

When my kids were that young, it was nothing but Dora the Explorer.

Of course, now that they're too old for shows like that, I take great pleasure whenever we get in the car and they ask "Where are we going?" by answering with three measured claps.

My kids jump around shows too much and don't watch enough to get anything seriously stuck in my head, except for maybe when my daughter (7) sings My Little Pony over and over.
She's seriously obsessed and got that way before even watching one episode. Now that she's seen a couple it's worse.

That show is pretty fantastic. Me and the kiddo have been watching it together for quite a while. It especially made the deployment in 2011 easier because we would have skype dates and watch it together.

I guess it's good that I'm not having kids. The one time I agreed to baby sit I only allowed the kid to watch Beakman's World. He didn't understand it but it also didn't piss me off. When I was young I watched Sesame Street, Mr Rogers, Mr. Wizard, Square One, 321 Contact, and Ghost Writer and I turned out fine. Kind of.

    I know as a parent it's not that simple so I just don't become a parent. :D

Secret Santa aside, am I the only one from the U.S. who ISN'T particularly excited for the Christmas season to start TOMORROW? I mean, I happen to really like Thanksgiving. This year is the first year in more than a decade that we'll be having the family Thanksgiving somewhere other than our house, but we still have to cook a great deal of the food for fourteen people. You'd think that we'd get to cook less if someone else is hosting but apparently the family will all cry if certain foods are not made the same as they always are. Anyway, I have to deal with that before I can allow Christmas to happen.

"Speed bump" in this case refers to either the 15 pounds you put on by gorging yourself on turkey, or the way you feel post turkey-gorging.

Well, American Thanksgiving is like celebrating a nice dinner we had before we stabbed the natives in the back, so you can see why the holiday has become something of the ignored middle child of the big end-of-the-year holiday fest.

Do we really need and/or want to do this here?
I mean, if we look at pretty much any holiday, there's going to be some unpleasantness or controversy attached to it somewhere along the line.
I'm not saying we should sweep that unpleasantness or those controversies under a rug or ignore them altogether. I'm just suggesting that this particular thread may not be the best place for such a discussion.

I celebrate Thanksgiving like anyone else, but I'm just saying it has unavoidable historical baggage that, when combined with the eagerness for our economy to start the Christmas shopping season ASAP, is always going to leave it in the dust.

I kinda like that retail stores are getting brownie points and good publicity for NOT opening on Thanksgiving.

In terms of being thankful for stuff, every year we watch the news after Thanksgiving dinner and see the mobs of people at department stores and we're thankful we're not there being trampled. Especially with stuff like Twitter, we can see the mobs as they form before the 11 o clock news.

I think the Canadians figured Thanksgiving out, man. Have that shit in October, so you can spread out the food and parties.

Speak for yourself. I love thanksgiving. Eating way too much food, watching tv, and then falling asleep is the best. I do lump in it with the Christmas season though, so Christmas music from here on out is ok with me.

I like Thanksgiving because it was a great thing between my birthday and Christmas. But now also in November I have the wife's b-day, and our anniversary was 4 days ago. This is a very crowded time. Also the kids b-day is the 5th of January.

I'm thankful for everything I have everyday but Thanksgiving as a holiday isn't a happy memory for my family and we haven't had a dinner since I was 6, I'm 26 now. So we jump right into Christmas planning after Halloween.

Well, I adore Christmas and I'm not a Christian, so I guess I'm good at celebrating what holidays have become instead of what they were. I don't celebrate Columbus Day, but where I live they never really did anyway and even then, there's not really any celebration attached to it. It's just a name to slap on a sale. Good riddance to it. I majored in history. I do not have a rosy view of the colonists, but I still like for everyone in my family to get together and we cook and eat and hang out. I'm sorry for those who said they have bad memories of Thanksgiving. :(
