Farming wood for the trunk lines sounds like the best way to do it. Maybe stone for the junctions and local lines. Maybe half oak and half spruce or beech, one for the north-south and the other for east-west?

The good folk of Piney Mountain Village enjoy making handicrafts and trading with other peaceful folks, but who wants to cross the vast lands full of raiding parties of pillagers to meet them?
But fear not! The trading can now come to you! Piney Mountain Trading Company has now opened just outside Spawn Camp. Items produced by the villagers are sold for the mutual benefit of you and them! Bells, fancy diamond axes, pink glazed terracotta, chainmail, golden carrots, globe banner patterns, and more are available for sale.
PMTC uses emeralds as currency, but what if you're lacking in the green? No worries, friend! We currently accept the following substitutes per emerald:
24 papers, 15 coals, 4 iron ingots, 22 carrots, 15 beets, 4 melons, 11 glass panes, 1 compass, 6 leathers, 20 stone (not cobble or smoothstone), 18 wool (white or black only)
During Opening Week, we are also offering FREE CAKE to visitors (one slice per customer please, while supplies last.)
Happy shopping! We hope to see you soon!

I'm still working on the Guild Hall, which doubles as my house but I planned for that. The first library level is basically done, second library level is yet to start. I may edit the size of the dining room/meeting area depending on how many people join up. Nearest Nether gate is at spawn for now, and it isn't an accurate portal. There's river and road access. I plan on using this place to store unique artifacts we discover, that aren't cursed @Enc, as well as a place to create a log of what we find. There's also a wall section that will have a large map on display.
I've set up a banner, and if anyone who joins wants it on a shield, just let me know.
We intend to run Village Raids fairly often, at a village close to spawn. No one is excluded from joining us, but anyone who isn't in the guild is essentially on their own. I'll exclude non-guild members from a base that will be constructed nearby. The reason is that the guild is in it's infancy and is short on resources. Once some time passes and we have the infrastructure needed to support more folks we'll be more accommodating. For example, I don't even have potion stands set up in the Guild Hall.
No one's required to help finish constructing the hall, I still consider it my own project.

I am none of these things.
What I am is angry.
Angry at pillagers for walking into my dirt hut and making a nuisance of themselves by killing me three times in 20 minutes.

Also, in the interest of mutual defense against the pillager incursions, PMTC has donated two ocean explorer maps to the Rivergrove Adventuring Society. These ancient maps list possible sites of lost treasures, and it is hoped that these treasures might help adventurers in their endless struggles against these raiding bands scattered across the world.
Yesterday late in the day, the Guild defended a village just west of the mountains south of spawn. Unfortunately we discovered how badly we underestimated our Pillager enemy and sadly there were no Villager survivors. Efforts are currently underway to better defend the area and to restore the village itself.
This morning, scouts in the area reported a camp to the south of the village. Their campfire smoke was clearly visible over the horizon as day broke. After a day of spying on their encampment, they reported a small reconnaissance party patrolling the land around the camp, as well as about 15 pillagers inside the walls. Thankfully there were no Vindicators or Ravager beasts. With most the guild away, Mayabird and I decided to investigate ourselves. The Pillager enemies were routed, and Mayabird and I explored the encampment.
(I'm worried about going over the 1mb image limitations, so I created an album for folks to check out. Yes, I know F1 removes the HUD, yes I will likely not remember to do this in the future.)
I fixed the spawn nether portal, it goes to the correct place in the nether now. I made a rudimentary building around the portal on the nether side so folks don't get blasted when they travel there. Feel free to change it, I was mostly just making a box around it for protection. Be aware ghasts can spawn in any 5x4x5 sized open area so don't leave areas that big inside buildings in the nether.
I'm planning on making a nether road from that portal so it'll be easier to get to everyone's areas, I'll probably just make it two blocks wide this time and give it some kind of a roof to provide cover from ghasts.

Update! Piney Mountain Trading Company now accepts new emerald equivalents: string (14), raw chicken (14), raw porkchops (7), rotten flesh (32), and more usefully, bamboo and wood! A full stack of bamboo (64) can be used in lieu of an emerald, and so can 32 sticks/16 planks/4 logs. That's right! Even if you have nothing but the ability to punch trees, you can convert that into rare and useful goods at PMTC!
We also now offer a dozen-plus-four stacks of farm fresh eggs. Need eggs for cooking or getting a chicken farm started? Name your own price! Take as many as you need! The barrel is by the door.

Another camp has appeared at 1357, 970, outside the double village. SkyEnc's orbit wont allow for landfall today. Someone save them!
The encampment that Skyiarthorn discovered from above (always grateful for their air support) after some scouting looks to be more well armed than the last. Enchanted items were reported, as well as strange bubbles. A witch perhaps? The twin villages themselves are completely exposed, with only a couple of iron golems to aid them.
This looks bad folks.
Rivergrove's new potion brewery is being put to use immediately preparing Instant Health II, Strength II and 6 precious Splash Regen + potions.
EDIT: Like mushrooms in the night, 2 more have popped up in different villages across the land!
Last night the Dungeonhaus was unlocked! This is a place that serves as a hub for various Dungeons that will open over time. Warp gates to it can be found in the corners of the world, marked on the dynamic map as “DungeonhausWarpGate”. However, the warp from Dungeonhaus returns you to a warp gate near Spawn. The Dungeonhaus itself also may or may not contain secrets waiting to be discovered.
Dungeons accessed from the Dungeonhaus are activities usually involving combat, platforming, and puzzles. Loot can be found throughout the dungeon with most ending in some sort of boss and high value loot. Communicate with the participants to determine how you would like to distribute loot! Dungeons will be remain accessible after they open so they may be continue to be explored.
oh that reminds me I found a sword in a hidden chest in the dungeonhaus, I don't particularly want it so I'm gonna drop it off at the adventurer's guild in spawn
The villages of Sweetberry (-400, 1100) and Spruceholm (-750, 1900) are available if anyone wants a village to lord over. I've walled them in, lit them up, and started a few simple farms. Sweetberry has been "repopulated" with a pair of Nitwits since the original inhabitants were all killed due to my inattention. Spruceholm's population were all living when I left.
I've finally found a home in Greysport (-1000, 2700) which will one day feature a skelegrinder and netherportal.
