D&D Secret Santa and Cryptic Cards Teamup: Crisis on Classiest Earth

edited December 2014 in Debate and/or Discourse
Hello and welcome to Secret Santa, also known as Clue-Free Christmas, Hidden Holidays or X-Filed Xmas! It's coming up to that time of year where society paradoxically compells us to flex our "think of others" brain meats and our "buy stuff" brain meats. These brain meats can come into conflict if we don't exercise them properly. So what better way to get some practice in!

Secret Santa is not alone this year! A latecomer last year, this thread shall also be used for organising Cryptic Cards. Want to be classy but can't afford the shipping? You can arrange to get someone to send a cheerful card to instead! Not that you can't send a card to your Santee as well.

SIGN UP PROCEDURE HAS CHANGED, PAY ATTENTION

So how do you sign up for my traditional gifting program? PM me. In the past I've allowed signups just in the thread, and had to chase down folk for their details separately. This year, if I haven't received a PM by the closing date, that's tough cookies. Your PM should include:

-Your real name and address
-Whether you're being a Secret Santa and/or Cryptic Carder.
-Whether you can find it within your heart (or wallet) to post to those beyond the shores of your own lands (NB Cryptic Card will be an international affair regardless. I'm assuming those who sign up can afford to post a card anywhere in the world.)
-Whether you wish to receive adult-themed gifts, also known as Ennesseffdoubleyou.
-Whether you wish to be on the reserve list for ungifted Santees (see below)

Also think about posting to this thread about what you like as an idea for your eventual Santa. For unimaginative people like myself you can use Wishlists at the likes of Amazon, Steam or GOG.com

You'll have until November 9th to sign up, where concerns like All Hallow's Eve have concluded, but the opportunity to net some classy presents without busting your wallet at the likes of Black Friday has not passed you by. It will take me a few days to get everyone assigned, so I may be open to some last minute additions, but keep this date in mind.

There are some restrictions to qualify for joining the Secret Santa. Either:
-You have been posting since before January 2014, OR
-You can be vouched for by someone who has been posting since before January 2014
I reserve the right to refuse the admission of anyone for any other reason. In addition the Mods have the final say over who can take part, and can veto any admission. Any such refusal should be taken up with them.

Ideally I'd like to have all the assignments sent to their Santas before Thanksgiving, which should give everyone around a month to figure out how best to be classy to your fellow man before the agreed upon date of Christmas. Problems can happen however, and I'll understand if by Christmas Eve your gift has not reached its recipient, especially if you've explained this to your Santee and myself. I advise you all to use tracking numbers when you send them in case something goes wrong. If you have failed to send me notification of any actions you have taken by January 20th, I shall be in contact with the Mods. They understand the importance of being classy, and frown upon those who ask for the responsibility and then shun it. You WILL be banned if you fail to live up to your obligation without good reason. Also, never display disappointment in what you receive. People are being classy and sending you gifts, and it is bad form to complain about what you receive and forget the reason behind the gift. In the event a Santee goes without gift, I will be asking someone on the reserve list to make it up to them, preferably by the end of February.

Remember, it's now what you give or get, but how classy you are in doing it. <3

The Material Interests of the Northern Irish Forum-goer

NB: As I am a filthy Socialist European, if you are interested in purchasing things of an electronic bent, please keep regional compatability in mind. My computer can play Region 1 DVDs however.

    The :D
Electronic Gaming - I roll with a PS3, PS Vita and a PC. Highlights of my collection are the Assassins Creed, Uncharteds, inFamouses (inFamii?), GTAs, Gods of War and Final Fantasy. Those recent HD Classic collections are pretty spiffy too. If my Santa wants to send me gifts by Steam or GOG.com, let me know and I'll relay my details. My Brother's job gives me access to all EA games, so I won't need them from other sources.
Comics - I'm interested in reading some of the more interesting one off stories, like Dark Knight Returns (which I have). I'm also interested in graphic novel series like Scott Pilgrim (which I also have). EXCEPTIONS: I'm not interested in reading Y: The Last Man or Walking Dead.
Classic Cartoons - In the interest of expanding my Godson's and Nephew's cultural experience, I have been collecting classic cartoons, i.e. Cartoons made prior to 1970. I currently have Disney Treasures, Looney Tunes Golden Collections and the Complete Droopy and Tom & Jerry, but there are others I'd like to assemble.

    The :)
"Art Of" Books - Know those books which are full of concept sketches and art for major movies and games? I like those, especially for recent animated films.
Other Books - Comedy mostly, especially satire and/or parody. If you have any interesting history books about the 1900-1950 period I won't say no. Don't be afraid to send something that is neither of these.
Webcomic Stuff - I read stuff like Nedroid, Hark! A Vagrant!, Bad Machinery and such. Books or non-clothing merchandise from such places are welcome.
TV Boxsets - Feel free to broaden my horizons. I have or am getting all Doctor Who and most classic British Comedy.
Soundtracks - Think a popular movie/game/TV show sounds awesome? You're free to send some of that my way.
Arts & Crafts - Skilled with a brush or pencil or tablet or knitting needle and want to give something original? I'm down with that.

    The :(
Clothes - I'm well stocked for non-nudity. EXCEPTION: Interesting Hats, although my head is rather big.
Model Kits - I don't have neither the time or skill to assemble them.
MMORPG subscriptions - I don't know how likely receiving this is, but I don't play any MMORPGs.

    The :D:D
These are the wild if-my-Santa-is-a-generous-millionaire type wishes, which I shall spoil for fear of appearing greedy.
    - An SD Card-ready Digital Camcorder, and appropriate SD Card.
    - A PS4 and Games that aren't Call of Duty or Battlefield or Assassin's Creed 4 because I ended up with a copy isn't that weird?

    The :D:D:D actual-millionaire-or-outright-has-divine-powers wishes
    -Pay off my mortgage
-Fund the installation of Photovoltaic Solar Panels on my roof
    -A Fiat 500 L
    -Peace on Earth
-Perpetual Energy becomes viable, widespread and cheap
-Alzheimers and other conditions that degenerate a person's mental condition are cured
    -A cure for Diabetes
-The old smilies reinstated (Can't believe I didn't have to delete this)

If these are hopelessly vague, I have a cheat sheet you can reference.

My Christmas wishlist rarely alters, so this is almost a straight cut and paste job from two years ago, updated to include boardgames purchased in the interim.
If I were able to steer someone getting gifts for me in a particular direction I would make them avoid getting DVDs (because I have a bunch and am trying to avoid buying new ones), books (unless you want to plough through my Goodreads list to make sure I haven't already got it), graphic novels or comics (ditto) or green vegetables (because I don't really like most of them - except green beans, those are ok).

Unfortunately, that's pretty much all the stuff I really like, except maybe Lego (I only have a couple of modern Star Wars sets and almost all of the LoTR/DC/Marvel stuff) and boardgames (I have TI3, 7 Wonders, Rex, Alien Frontiers, Arkham Horror, Quarriors, Quantum, Dead of Winter, Pandemic, Tokaido, Star Trek: Fleet Captains, Netrunner, Dice Duels, Coup and Eclipse, and my buds I always play with have Android: Infiltration, Munchkin, BSG, Dominion, Spartacus, Ticket to Ride, Ghost Stories and Android). Classy and unusual movie posters also delight my cold heart. I am a size medium if you cannot be swayed from buying me a t-shirt. I like real ale. I am in my late thirties, and a married guy. Those are super specific things to tell someone buying me a gift. Just get me whatever. Last birthday my mum got me slippers at my request. That's the guy you're gifting.

    EXCEPT:

I don't watch the animes or read manga, and find figurines and geeky nick-nacks to be pointless clutter. NSFW presents are funny for about two seconds, so don't bother. Music is always tricky when buying blind, so probably not.

It is time to Santa all up in this bitch.

I will post a wishlist some time between now and the eventual heat death of the universe.

Lists of things!!! (still under construction)

Things what make me happy in my heart
Stuff for walls! I have totally blank walls except for something nice from last years Santa. I like old sci fi art. Or movie posters (I would LOVE a nice poster for the movie Seven, Fight Club, or American History X or any super hero movies). I love Edward Gorey and other kind of gothy art as well. Art prints are good too (surrealist stuff is great, abstract art is lame). Demotivators from Despair, Inc are awesome too. For some reason I kind of think that old soviet propaganda posters are cool too...

Board Games - I don't have a lot of them. I tend to like heavier strategic, more european games. Though I also like things with great themes. I don't have many, I do have CitOW, GoT, Euphoria, and Arkham Horror [base set].

    Computer games - I have a steam Wishlist...here

Boozahol - I don't drink a bunch, but having a nice whiskey around wouldn't hurt. I don't drink Tequila (it makes me sick, not because I don't like it) or vodka. Everything else is fair game

Foodstuffs - Does your place of residence make something awesome? I would probably like to eat it. I don't get super weird (no bull testicles), but I'm a fan of delicious things.

    Sending PM now....

I should probably figure out a list though, right?

    Edit:

    Likes:
    Power Rangers (Yes, seriously)
Lord of the Rings / The Hobbit
Avatar (The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra, not Dances with Smurfs)
    Starcraft (Mostly watching eSports. TLO-chan...)
    MCU
    Lovecraft
    Spaaaaaaaaaaace
    Dresden Files
    The Iron Druid Chronicles

    Things I like:
Board Games (mostly co-op instead of competitive, but it's not a hard rule)
Vidja Games (I have a Steam wishlist that's not kept that up to date, but you should also be able to see what kinds of games I play)
    Wall art
    Collectibles (bookshelf type stuff)
    Books
Signed things especially, for display pieces. Doubly so if it's the artist

    Not so much:
    Figurines
Things that take up a ton of space
NSFW things just for the sake of NSFW
    Coffee / Tea
    Chocolate (I'm allergic)

For video games, I have a PC, a Ninendo DS and a Wii, but nothing from the current gen. (You're welcome to fix that though, wink wink). If you need to run something by someone (whether I have something already or what-not), hit up @‌

Since I am employed this year, I shall partake.

Unfortunately as a joyless person I don't have anything specific that I want, so that'll make things hard.

    edit: So list update!

Computer games are always good. I'm slowly updating my Steam Wishlist, and feel free to add me on Steam regardless of your Santa status.

    Username: Mortious
    Display name: Mort
Avatar: Agent 47 with Silver Ballers

That said, feel free to ignore the list and substitute it with something you love and want to share.

Physical gifts, if you don't mind the postage.

I love regional things, so anything native to your country that can't be gotten easily elsewhere. Except foodstuffs. While I would love to try it, our Customs officers have SWAT Teams and will use them on me.

Anything random and tactile, like silly putty (which I can't find locally) liquid sand, an articulated robot hand around 1-1.5 inches in length, you know, random hands busy toys.

I also like fire, and things that make fire. (I WILL end up hurting myself with this)

Adult gifts: eeeeh, I'm trying to get over my prudish side so a serious couple-orientated adult fine time activity aid won't be dismissed out of hand.

I thought about skipping this this year but who am I kidding
I would just spend that money on
    well
probably on something not that awesome anyway

    PM incoming

list for discerning santa of supreme classiness and distinction:

oh god this feels so incredibly long aaaa

-- Things I nerd out about:

*Science Fiction: I have an eccentric book collection. I like space opera, rockets and rayguns kind of stuff, eldritch stuff, pulpy stuff, hard stuff, science fantasy stuff in equal measure. I am a sci-fi writer and a submissions editor at Uncanny Magazine myself so stuff relating to that is extra cool. I uh also just started assembling the bones of a book podcast so once I get that blog properly set up that might be a good place to find out stuff about things in the worst case scenario. Science fiction is kind of my life.

    *Venture Brothers: love. this. show.
also a big fan of the kind of shows Venture Bros. is riffing on-- I grew up watching Jonny Quest, Herculoids, Space Ghost and the rest of the '60s Hanna-Barbera stuff.
Venture etc stuff we do have:
    *VB Seasons 1, 2, 3 on DVD
*Brock Samson, Henchman 21 & 24 action figures, and the Rusty Venture/Jonas Venture SDCC lunchbox set
*Doctor Orpheus bobblehead from awesome santa Corbius in 2010
*I was in Shirt Club last year! so I have all the shirts.
    *Rad Venture-themed steins from TL:DR;
    *I have Season 1 of Jonny Quest on DVD thanks to santa brosef Gooey and a rad comic-story Space Ghost book from Rad santa TL:DR;
if it is not one of those things it would probably be cool/awesome/whoa!

*I am a sculptor and toy collector and art-er!
I love handmade sculpting tools, unusual action figures, etc.
I also do toy/action figure modding and kitbashing so even if it's a figure I don't love it will probably become one eventually?

*Board games. There are a bunch of them that we have access to thanks to LiteJedi, ambassador of boardgames, but there are also a lot of things we might want to actually own.

*Quirky retro stuff, campy "where I'm from" stuff, and props and things are cool. Stuff you made by hand or that you totally love and think is awesome will also seem incredibly cool to me too!

food et cetera type stuff I like:
good beer -- whiskey -- rum
hot sauce (not into like, the 500,000-scovilles range, but Blair's Original Death Sauce is not really like, "hot enough" for me)
If you bake or make foods that can be shipped-- cool!

oh, and-- I like Penny-Arcade and Camp Weedonwantcha as well, but also don't have any of the fan gear for those things either.

I have a Steam account (links in sig) and I own some way cool games.
(There are a couple of games I want; I use my steam wishlist to actually wish for games I want, whoa.)

    --Not so into:
no consoles! Sorry. Fake geek girl, I guess.

I haven't played Magic competitively since the end of the Mirrodin cycle. The *first* Mirrodin Cycle.

like many people I am pretty picky about music. If you make a mix or something like... cool? but I wouldn't make it a featured item.

While I love sci-fi... I'm really not a Star Trek superfan. (a recent rewatching of the Original Trilogy Star Wars melted my heart and suddenly I was twelve and ridiculous all over again. I give zero fucks about Siths and Jedi stuff; please no. My allegiances lie with the Scruffy Looking Nerf-Herder.)

    When in doubt:
ask @nexuscrawler. he is my boyfriend dude guy person. Other people for asking things: @Quoth, @syndalis and @BEAST! might be able to help you, if you get stuck.

With awkward reluctant Tina uggggggggh throat noise, I could offer you my Amazon list of out of print books and odd plush animals if you must have one (PM nexus for it)

Piffle, I am poorer and also crazier than EVER BEFORE and I am still down. >:3

Heads up Santee, whoever you are. I have a reckless disregard for shipping costs and one of these with someone's name on it. We're gonna get through this together...

As for my Santa, BRO DON'T EVEN STEP, you think you can outgift this? HAHAHAHA

    Here is my wishlist if ya gonna cheat;
things I like in no particular order

Legend of Korra, Doctor Who, Transistor, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Puella Magi Madoka, Kill la Kill

Homemade stuff is da best. Send me all your plushie cookies and what have you. A crayon drawing would also suffice.

    Alternately, here are some material possessions I don't materially possess yet;

I recently got into Gunpla, and would love another Master Grade kit. I've currently got Epyon EW Ver. and Nu Ver Ka. I'm not planning on picking up anymore for a while, due to tighter funds (and they have fickle stock) but I'd love any of the Gundam Wing EW Ver. kits! Tallgeese and Heavyarms are my favourite. :P

My Steam wishlist - I mostly play Rocksmith, and have lapsed for a few months this year, but am getting back into it! Any DLC would be heartily welcomed, and comes with the added bonus of surely getting to see my try and play it on camera for you ;D

My PlayStation Profile - lets ya see what vidyas I already have. I mostly play PS4 and Vita at this point, and have p.much everything I'll ever want for the PS3 and PS2 already. There are only a few big PS4 releases left in the year, and I'll probably be getting em myself, so vidya game me at your peril!

I also just bought a Wii U! I've got Bayo2, Smash Bros, NSMBU, Wonderful 101 and Zelda WW HD on the way already. Wouldn't mind some of the other awesome Wii U games I've missed out on! ;D

    I'm in.

I am requesting awesome things to decorate the new abode I will be occupying mid January. I prefer stuff that is awesome.

I will need everything from cookware to window dressing. Posters to pitchers. Mugs to rugs. Lamps to loveseats.

    Maybe not an electric blanket.

Edit: moar descriptive stuff. I am into most things related to drug freak and alternative cultures. Beatniky hippy stuff, psychedelic art, darker theater and cultish(non camp) film stuff, design stuff and cultural artifacts that represents a particularly moment in the timespace continuum.

Seriously, just aim for awesome. Like, I you see something, and are like, "wow, that's awesome." Or like, "hey this comes with a great story" or "the artist who made this is spiffy" or "hey, wait I'm a spiffy artist" or "hey, this thing is great and I use it all the time."

    Stuff like that.

I will post wish lists at some point but it will be stuff for family to choose from too so dont think I'm being greedy with a ton of expensive stuff on my list - I like to give lots of options so I don't know exactly what I'll get because surprises are fun!

I'll try to order my amazon list from most wanted to least, lower dollar items might be further down the list but don't feel like it's something I dont really want since it's low on the list, I wont put anything there that I wouldn't really enjoy getting. Don't feel like you have to spend more than you're comfortable spending, I know it's a cheesy saying but it's the thought that counts and this is supposed to be fun so have fun. :)

    Hints for Santa:
One of my favorite parts of christmas is a christmas stocking. I like the general mish mash of little gifts that range from silly to useful and can come from all price points. So feel free to make me a "christmas stocking"!

I love shopping at sephora, I am a makeup addict, but you'll have to check my wishlist because I have a LOT of stuff. I like drugstore makeup too but am more picky about it (IE Revlon, Colorgirl, Loreal, etc). Makeup goes in stockings great. lol

I'd love to get a beauty box subscription. I've had 2 in the past and really enjoyed them. They are boxes with diff beauty products to try every month, its like getting a present every month! You can gift subscriptions. :)

    Suggestions include:
    http://boxes.mysubscriptionaddiction.com/box/sample-society $15
    http://boxes.mysubscriptionaddiction.com/box/ipsy $10
    http://boxes.mysubscriptionaddiction.com/box/boxycharm $21

Headbands! Here is somebody's pinterest board that shows what I mean. The ones on that page are a bit ornate and pricey but you can get ones that are more simply patterned for under $10 at department and super stores that look really nice, it just depends on where you're shopping. I prefer hard metal bands over the fabric or stretchy ones. I like any metal color.

Obviously, I like disney stuff (like classy or simple and cute stuff, not gaudy kid stuff), I am kind of picky so look over my wish list to see what my tastes are like. I still need some of the disney dvd's but I have a lot so check my wish list. I do like geeky knick nacks and stuff but cant think of anything in particular right now. I like some of the stuff on thinkgeek.

I like household stuff, decorative items, kitchen stuff, organizing stuff - like stuff you'd find at bed bath and beyond type stores. I also really love stuff made out of colored blown glass - vases, bowls, figurines, etc.

I do love computer gaming, (city building, sims, and resource management games and the occasional MMO) - but dont have a lot of time for gaming so I'm selective.

I'm open to items not on my wish list if you're feeling adventurous. You can always check with @Ludious, he knows what I like.

    Pls no dick pics or:
No drugstore eye shadows. Quality is often lacking and it's harder to work with.
Not big on lotions, or hair products. I just dont have a lot of interest in experimenting here.
No nail polish. It is a sad and bitter reminder that my nails wont grow.
I dont like things with super busy and colorful patterns. I like color but keep it simple and chic. And for the love of god no animal prints. Leopard? No. Cheeta? Tiger? NO! Cow? I SAID NO!!!
Dont want NSFW stuff. Disney princesses are classy dammit!

I post Makeup stuff and Schnauzers on instagram.

I've sent a couple of messages your way, don't know if you got them or not. Just to be sure I'll say it here: can you move me from the Secretive list to the Cryptic list? Thanks!
