I have gotten about five of these in the past few days:

I know sometimes this is indicative of a dying hard drive, but what should I do to check?

Run "chkdsk" from a command line. This will take a while. If any errors are found, that's another bad sign, and I would start backing up data.

I did this already (defragmented too!), and there was one small corrupted thing that was fixed.

It's a laptop, if that matters. Everything's already backed up. It's not very old.

Find out what manufacturer makes your hard drive and download their disk diagnostic program, then run it. This will do a more thorough, vendor-specific check as well as checking for any SMART errors.

Make sure you backup any important files pronto, that drive could go from bad to worse at any time.
