People did assume Hillary was going to be the Dem's candidate for 2008, until Obama won Iowa in the primary and proved to be a legitimate competitor. Keep in mind that Obama was largely unknown except for the one speech he gave at a convention (though it was a good speech). Clinton had big name recognition.

yeah, true, but that sort of dark horse thing isn't something I'm prepared to count on

and it is also true that a lot can happen in two years

but I think it is exceptionally foolish to entertain unrealistic notions and Hilary Clinton is the only serious contender right now

yeah, Jimmy Carter honestly strikes me as a very kindhearted, well-meaning, intelligent man

I really believe that is true about him, I think he's one of the absolute best all-around people we've ever had as a president

and yet he put Paul Volcker in charge of the Fed, and he fucked everything up in Afghanistan

Carter has done enough shithead things where I take a lot of the stories of his Fred Rogers level kindness with a grain of salt. I've read a few books from multiple Clinton aides that claimed he was a massive pain in their ass throughout Bill's administration.

Well they never asked or appointed him to any position yet he just started flying off on his own, acting as a US ambassador, and negotiated deals without the President's input. The results were never catastrophic but it cost the US some negotiation leverage at least a couple of times and the consistent undermining used to drive Clinton up the wall.

its just that i keep the voter card in a safe for completely pointless reasons and keep forgetting to take it out and look at it

Has a woman ever run for office after having worked as a stripper? I can't imagine that would go over nearly as well because of "family values" and all that.

Can't have a sluttly slut sluttin' it up as an elected official after all.

Well, there was that pornstar who ran for governor of California but that was probably more a publicity stunt than an earnest effort.

Oh my god guys, I saw my first local political ad this season! I was watching the Daily Show, it was a commercial break, and I saw some typical radio studio footage and I was thinking, "Who is this guy and why is Jon Stewart doing a thing about him" when I realized it was an ad for my local area! I can't remember anything about who it wanted me to vote for or against, but maybe if I saw it like 10 more times I'd know who was the bad guy. Some CEO?

    This is so exciting!

you are... excited for political ads?

Just saw one from Charlie Crist who is promising "executive orders" to enact his policies

so pleased that one of Obama's legacies will be taking Bush's controversial expansion of executive power and making it standard and accepted, even a selling point! at every level of government

guess we need to update that Schoolhouse Rock video about how laws are made

I'm jokingly excited, because the election is next week and I've seen literally 0 political ads this year.

President Obama has issued less executive orders than about fifty percent of the other presidents tho.

But each of the orders given by Obama have been to establish his permanent Socialst reign. So it doesn't matter if he issued less, his are way worse in comparison.

    Also, he's a Democrat

also black and they are super racist

It's time for another episode of "What Incredibly Stupid Thing is Arizona Trying to Do Now?"

Let's take a look at Proposition 122, whose official title is Arizona Rejection of Unconstitutional Federal Actions Amendment.

Yeah, you probably have a good idea of where this is going, but just to be thorough, this prop would modify article 2, section 3 of the Arizona Constitution thusly (words in caps are the additions).
Section 3. A. The Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the land TO WHICH ALL GOVERNMENT, STATE AND FEDERAL, IS SUBJECT.
    B. TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE'S FREEDOM AND TO PRESERVE THE CHECKS AND BALANCES OF THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION, THIS STATE MAY EXERCISE ITS SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY TO RESTRICT THE ACTIONS OF ITS PERSONNEL AND THE USE OF ITS FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO PURPOSES THAT ARE CONSISTENT WITH THE CONSTITUTION BY DOING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:
    1. PASSING AN INITIATIVE OR REFERENDUM PURSUANT TO ARTICLE IV, PART 1, SECTION 1.
    2. PASSING A BILL PURSUANT TO ARTICLE IV, PART 2 AND ARTICLE V, SECTION 7.
    3. PURSUING ANY OTHER AVAILABLE LEGAL REMEDY.

    C. IF THE PEOPLE OR THEIR REPRESENTATIVES EXERCISE THEIR AUTHORITY PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION, THIS STATE AND ALL POLITICAL SUBDIVISIONS OF THIS STATE ARE PROHIBITED FROM USING ANY PERSONNEL OR FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO ENFORCE, ADMINISTER OR COOPERATE WITH THE DESIGNATED FEDERAL ACTION OR PROGRAM.

Basically, the Arizona legislature wants to give itself the right to refuse to fund Federal programs (like, say, Obamacare) by saying, "Nuh uh, we think that's unconstitutional!"

Which is, of course, fucking insane. But that's kind of par for the course for my state, sadly.

Naturally, various environmental groups (like the Sierra Club) don't like this idea at all, because the AZ legislature hasn't been known as of late for being good custodians of nature, and they've all written eloquent counterarguments.

But my favorite opposition statement came from the Arizona Republic (our biggest newspaper), simply because of how blunt it is:
It is a temper tantrum that would solve nothing.

Tell us how you really feel, guys.
