That's, huh. I'm trying to imagine that happening in the US. The frothing rage from social conservatives would be something to behold.

President Obama has issued less executive orders than about fifty percent of the other presidents tho.

its not the tally, it's what they're being used for

I'm still waiting for someone to actually do some real analysis of the scope of executive orders by president. I've tried to look at the list, but it would be a full time job to investigate them in detail.

Until someone can point to something like that, I'm incredibly suspicious of the claim that Obama has more "large" orders or has increased their scope. People have incredibly poor memories about things like this.

It's time for another episode of "What Incredibly Stupid Thing is Arizona Trying to Do Now?"

Let's take a look at Proposition 122, whose official title is Arizona Rejection of Unconstitutional Federal Actions Amendment.

Yeah, you probably have a good idea of where this is going, but just to be thorough, this prop would modify article 2, section 3 of the Arizona Constitution thusly (words in caps are the additions).
Section 3. A. The Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the land TO WHICH ALL GOVERNMENT, STATE AND FEDERAL, IS SUBJECT.
    B. TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE'S FREEDOM AND TO PRESERVE THE CHECKS AND BALANCES OF THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION, THIS STATE MAY EXERCISE ITS SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY TO RESTRICT THE ACTIONS OF ITS PERSONNEL AND THE USE OF ITS FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO PURPOSES THAT ARE CONSISTENT WITH THE CONSTITUTION BY DOING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING:
    1. PASSING AN INITIATIVE OR REFERENDUM PURSUANT TO ARTICLE IV, PART 1, SECTION 1.
    2. PASSING A BILL PURSUANT TO ARTICLE IV, PART 2 AND ARTICLE V, SECTION 7.
    3. PURSUING ANY OTHER AVAILABLE LEGAL REMEDY.

    C. IF THE PEOPLE OR THEIR REPRESENTATIVES EXERCISE THEIR AUTHORITY PURSUANT TO THIS SECTION, THIS STATE AND ALL POLITICAL SUBDIVISIONS OF THIS STATE ARE PROHIBITED FROM USING ANY PERSONNEL OR FINANCIAL RESOURCES TO ENFORCE, ADMINISTER OR COOPERATE WITH THE DESIGNATED FEDERAL ACTION OR PROGRAM.

Basically, the Arizona legislature wants to give itself the right to refuse to fund Federal programs (like, say, Obamacare) by saying, "Nuh uh, we think that's unconstitutional!"

Which is, of course, fucking insane. But that's kind of par for the course for my state, sadly.

Naturally, various environmental groups (like the Sierra Club) don't like this idea at all, because the AZ legislature hasn't been known as of late for being good custodians of nature, and they've all written eloquent counterarguments.

But my favorite opposition statement came from the Arizona Republic (our biggest newspaper), simply because of how blunt it is:
It is a temper tantrum that would solve nothing.

Tell us how you really feel, guys.

Minnesota is currently pushing a bill to revamp student tuition and is having a big push towards a bunch of equality programs

It's just moving the goalposts when the first lie doesn't work.

That said, Obama hasn't done much to scale back the expansion of powers the executive branch enjoyed under Bush. Saying he's using them to create some sort of Marxist wonderland is fucking hilarious though.

GOP now up to 70%, and even that's modest.

Nate Silver has said that it's approaching the point where the polls would have to be universally wrong for the GOP to not win outright

The scenario that involves democratic victory requires everything leaning their way to break their way, and then get a few lucky bounces

this is a discord of mostly PA people interested in fighting games: https://discord.gg/DZWa97d5rz

This is what I love about Silver's stuff. My expectations come election day are set accordingly.

It is definitely moving the goal posts since the raw numbers don't reflect the idea that he's using more executive orders, but it doesn't mean this particular goalpost isn't a valid one to check up on. If there is one thing we should all be cognizant of at this point, it's that human beings are incredibly inaccurate when it comes to judging things they are biased towards/against. That's why I would like to see some meaningful analysis on the subject.

It's work that should have been done by whoever is making the positive claim that he is using broader executive orders, but, since the subject has been broached, I can't definitively say whether he has issued more broad/sweeping executive orders or not. I'm also skeptical of anyone who says they know the answer to that question unless they have some sources to back it up.

The one piece of news that is in the democrats' favor is that early voting turnout has been VERY high so far. There's some states where the early voting is exceeding 2010's total turnout already, and usually when turnout is higher it's advantageous to dems.

But yeah I don't doubt Nate Silver.

Losing the Senate can be good in the longer term because it means the GOP has a record to be held accountable for in 2016. With both houses they can't whine about Democrats as much.

It's just that they're going to spend the next two years trying to repeal the ACA and outlaw abortion than actually fix the country.

Yeah, every time someone accuses Obama of being a Marxist/Socialist or any kind of actual leftist I just roll my eyes and think "yeah I wish"

The subtext in that is that Obama is so far outside their worldview that they can't tell the difference.

Do you have any idea what that means for us when the Democrats Democrat and give them what they want?

I couldn't even vote for a Democratic senator for Arizona.

Our choices were Trent Franks and a libertarian named Stephen Dolgos.

Though I can understand why the Dems didn't bother. Back in 2012, Trent won with a whopping 63.3%, so they probably figured that trying to run against him again would be a complete waste of funds when a) he hasn't done anything to alienate his voters and b) the odds are stacked even more against a Dem winning than they were two years ago.

So I voted for Franks, because fuck libertarians, you know?

Or rather, they're going to spend that time trying to figure out a way of repealing the ACA without actually changing any of the programs that people actually like, meaning the best they will accomplish is making it even more dumb and broken than it already is.

I wish isidewith.com were a more well known thing. I feel like a majority of the GOP's success comes from people not knowing anything about the views and platforms of their local representatives and thus not voting or voting against their interests.

  • StericaSterica Yes Registered User, Moderator mod
The GOP's success comes from fear. "Voters are ignorant doofuses!" is an excuse every party uses when they fail.

Listen to an hour of talk radio and pay attention to the ads (which is easy since an hour of talk radio basically is an hour of ads). They tend to be rooted in some primal fear.

Theoretically it depends on the state/locality? Realistically - I've never brought my voter card (nor do I know where it is), I just bring my driver's licence, so long as that matches their records I've never had a problem.
