Captain Jorah Zym kept his distance as the big wigs discussed whatever the issue of the day was. Who gets to play with the big ol' satellite. Who the biggest kid in the playground was.

He was not hired to care, he was hired to ensure that Obsidian property was kept safe, with Ms Valen being the most 'Valuable' of all Obsidian property. Whatever they were talking about, theirs words were only arriving in drips and drabs. He was more concerned with the increasingly agitated voices coming through his earpiece. The crowd outside were not happy, and the security team keeping them at bay weren't in the best mood either.

"They're scared", he thought to himself. "They're not angry, not really. They're scared little animals, fighting or running because they don't know what else to do in their fear"

Report after report came in of brief outbursts from some individual or another, but the outside seemed stable for now. Other members of Zym's team inside had the same concerned disposition as he did.

Jorah would occasionally look over to Ms Valen to watch her body language. She had her nuances, her visual clues, that she would display to indicate the direction a talk was going, or whether her Security Chief should be watching for anything in particular. It was one of these cues, tapping her index finger on the console, that prompted him to change his frequency to that of her own earpiece. What she heard, he heard.

Sorry, neck deep in family stuff. Please go ahead, and anyone else please call the scene done when it feels settled. I'll be back to participate if I can get free.

So I don't actually feel like this scene is done. We've clearly answered the question Alfred posed and laid some more groundwork for future scenes, but I feel like we need to cap it off with a slightly more definite end-point, probably involving the rioters or security forces.

Okay, real sorry for the delay, family crisis has been averted. Was all wrapped up in other stuff - now that I have the time to really look at this, Auralynx is right. We've definitely got our answer... and the thing is, in Microscope, when you have your answer you stop. Abrupt as it may be. So, I'm going to just go ahead and call it (and partly because I'm now nursing a headcold that's making it hard for me to focus).

If we want to see what happens next with rioters, security forces, other corporations (and I'd love to see those details) - those will need to be other scenes.

    Scene Closed.

Question: "How does Obsidian acquire Keller City and the Mandate Uplink?"

Summary: Omar Hall, representative of Keller City and ex-corporate wageslave, meets with Cassandra Valen, CEO of Obsidian, to the Mandate Uplink facility after the signal from Earth disappears. Under watchful eye of heavily armed security teams from both sides, Hall and Valen agree to work together - Hall is willing to give control of the uplink to Obsidian - the lesser just about every evil in the Knoxos system at the moment. In return, Valen wants the whole city - the whole creative, free-minded, non-incorporated lot. But first, something needs to be done about the other powers gunning for Keller City and the Uplink.

Answer: "It turns out, Omar Hall and Cassandra Valen want the same thing: to keep the city and the uplink out of the hands of everyone else. Control is freely given."
Not the longest or most twisty-turny suspenseful scene, but I think we just witnessed the birth of something really cool for the settlers! Unless it all falls apart! But hey we'll just have to see how this alliance pans out.

    Sorry that took so long.

@The Brayster It's your turn, the Focus is still The Schism.

Event: Atlas gains control of the “Conduit” (Dark) placed after Exo-Corp’s conversion to Aeonism within the Colonization Period.

    SCENE
Question: “How does Atlas “secure” the conduit?”

Deacon Falgren, a high ranking member within Atlas, decides to make a grab for power by attaining the “Conduit”. Believed* to be an individual specially attuned to “Passage”, that is currently is being held in Divinity’s Reach: A massive subterranean workstation that had been overrun by Moro’s forces and turned into an internment camp. Falgren hires Sol Mercenaries to infiltrate the camp and secure the “Conduit” for Atlas.

The nature of the "Counduit" is a bit ambiguous. Whether it's a he,she or it is unknown to all but those who have witnessed it firsthand. Who only speak of it in reverence. Any attempt to get actual details from witnesses has proven fruitless. All that is known at the time of this event, is that it has been awhile since the "Conduit" had been seen and since then it has now entered Moro's compound. "Divinity's Reach" was originally a station established by the colonists with the support of Exo-Corp, but since then has been turned into one of the more hellish locations on Knoxos. Essentially a prison that also serves a munitions factory. The inmates are known to have to serve some of the sicker needs of Moro's gang.

    Required Characters:
    • Rolan Stroud : A spy in the employ of Atlas currently infiltrating Moro’s camp.
    • Dylan Cain: Leader of the Sol Task Force

    Banned Characters
    • Cassandra Valen

I believe that @The Brayster chooses a character first, @AlfredR second ,followed by @Auralynx and I am last .

And I'll take Gustave Philippe Moro himself, an amoral warlord cast with a mold from a much earlier era of Earth's politics. He may not himself be present on-site for this event, depending on where the scene goes, but he's aware of it via remote monitoring and / or communications.

Just because I'd like the villains to have comprehensible motives doesn't mean I won't do my damndest to make sure we have some! The lack of anyone obviously rotten in Beyond Earth is the biggest flaw in comparison to Alpha Centauri, imo, but I've been playing it too and think it's a pretty good skeleton of a game.

I'm interested to know who you think was obviously rotten in Alpha Centauri.
I'd be of the opinion that the focused ideology of each faction made them all rotten in one way or another.
Aside perhaps the Commissioner Pravin Lal, who was too diplomatic to ever be a threat, and also too diplomatic to ever enforce his flaw of forced authority under the UN Mandate.

alright, I'll take on the role Salvador "Salvon the Gator" Galton, a nephew of Hernán Gutiérrez . A child soldier turned war criminal in the Oil Wars and prisoner on-board the Heavenly Mandate, Salvon was a trusted "general" of Gutiérrez currently being held prisoner in Moro's camp. While most believe him dead, he has been kept alive and tortured for information.
(I was debating making a Bob Arctor/Scanner Darkly merc for Sol but I have no idea how that would add to the current scene. Especially since Brayster can just control the other PMCs by proxy. So I'm going with the ol Call of Duty "enemy of my enemy" foreign prisoner thing. Yay!)

@TheBrayster , I assume I just create the scene/intro now? Just want to make sure I do this right.

sidenote: I'm not entirely sure if it came across this way. But it wasn't my intentional to break Auralynx's rule of "no mustache twirling villains" with the introduction of the "warlords". Obviously they aren't meant to be "good" guys and inferred to be rather vicious, but that doesn't mean they don't have a motive- even if it isn't explicitly given. I mean if you were onboard a prison ship as a "war criminal" and delivered onto a new "civilized" world. I think there are plenty of reasons why you would go down a darker path, even if you weren't already on one. IF you were, then you might be given more reason.

After all who wants a fucking mass murderer. But they have to survive, right? There could also be all sorts of corporate intrigue also (i.e. they were convenient in the Oil Wars that Alfred mentioned, but now are no longer found useful). Tons of reasons that give depth , I would think...

Sorry , realize we aren't suppose to discuss. Just wanted to make clear I wasn't trying to violate a rule by introduce those type of figures. As inferred Valen (even if narcissistic in some ways) didn't paint a pretty picture of the other companies. Whether that's true or not :rotate:

Nah man, that's awesome. There's nothing wrong with putting a bit of extra exposition in, seeing as we aren't talking across a table so it is much harder to pick up intent. You are correct, you can introduce the scene and make first comment, then we continue in reverse order as per usual in scenes.

    Start

Divinity’s Reach glows with a dark blue radiance. A place that has lost its former beauty, the subterranean stronghold contains multiple modernistic structures that now had fallen into disrepair. Various cords dangled from the cavern-like ceilings and machinery laid scattered. The Reach now looked like the defective child of Salvadore Dali and Rube Goldberg made manifest in stone and steel.

Salvon , called the Gator by reputation, paced in a makeshift prison cell. Water fixtures leaked from the walls and various bodily fluids stained the floor near a rusty bucket. He grimaced as he began to hear muffled shots in the distance. Several men yelled in Spanish and rushed past him. Silenced by two precise bangs. Two men approached his cell carrying heavy weaponry, faces covered in off white balaclavas. Salvon raised his arms

    “Ningún Arma.”

One of the men lowers his gun and raises a blocky scanner with a small screen on the back. Several green rays make their way quickly vertically down Salvon’s face. The man makes a slight indecipherable sound as he looked down at the screen. “Keep on him” he says to the other man and then leaves Salvon’s line of sight.

“I have am not armed…No weapons.” He tries to convey to the soldier looking down the sights of AR.

The Sol Scanner reports back to his CO. He nods a negative on the ID but then raises his scanner screen

    “Salvadore Galton”

Beneath his D.O.B and other details a square pops up on the screen detailing that Daystrom has a 150,000 dollar bounty on the man.
@The Brayster , in case there is any ambiguity . You are intended to be the Commanding Officer referenced ;-)

    "Mr Galton"

The man who had thus far remained silent stepped forward towards the cell, pointed what appeared to be some sort of scanner at the bars, then stood back as the cell door flew open.

"You don't know who we are, but we most certainly know who you are. To put it simply, we are going to be your best buddies from now on. But we need you to be our buddy too, you understand?"

Salvon looks wearily at the Commanding Officer, his shoulders hanging low as soon as he heard his name uttered

    "What do you want?"

He kept his head down as he looked down at the legs of the men around him. He didn't recognize the uniforms.

"I suggest you look at me when I'm talking to you sunshine"

    Cain motions towards the door.

"They've been making you tamper with something, haven't they? Something that doesn't seem 'normal'? You're gonna take us there, quick and quiet. If we get what we need, we get you away from Moros gang. If not, well, we'll see what they do to jailbreakers"

Salvon smirks "No different than what they already do to prisoners." and a look of confusion crosses his face " "Tamper"? Is that some sort of figure of speech?

The Gator seems a tad disappointed the man-in-charge isn't familiar with whom he is dealing with. He rolls his eyes "Any "actual" work is.." he points down into the ground repeatedly"way....down."

"I can show you the way... His tone takes a dip as he realizes those "rescuing" him may have no idea as to what they are actually doing.

The SOL squad quickly make their way through the facility. Salvon is kept in tow largely as back-up compensation, should the operation go tits-up. Holoterminals throughout the station had been reprogrammed to display Mao-like propaganda of Moro. Life-size presences around every corner to force prisoners into further submission.

Moro’s forces seem disorganized and they are quickly silenced by the trained task force. Despite this upset in balance, those forced to work in the factory seem ambivalent to the chaos. Like stunned animals they merely watch the armed men pass by, thoughts of freedom having long escaped their minds.

After traversing the munitions factory, the group eventually reach the surveillance room where they meet their contact. Surveillance footage reveals the identity of the so-called conduit, a 38 year old woman named Samantha Burke. Footage of the individual revealed a girl in her late teens being escorted into lower-level cell. Lithe and malnourished, the girl had an alien presence about her. Her head completely shaven, skin the color of sandstone; she wore a modest tunic while a hexagon pendant hung from her neck. Interrogation proved fruitless as she remained indifferent to the guards. As if they didn’t even exist. Skimming through the endless footage, one scene sticks out- that of a man slamming the butt of his rifle against her head after his threats evoked no response. The girl fell to the ground like a doll, black ichor seeped out from the back of her head – for her to only rise up as if the incident never happened. No apparent wound. The conduit had seemingly been found.

For then unknown reasons, the team had been ordered to keep Salvon captive in the surveillance room before traversing further down. Marshall and Phillips stayed behind as the rest of the team made their way down.

After taking the lift to the lower levels, the team found themselves on a level seemingly modeled after a gothic cathedral. The ceilings were vaulted and the walls adorned with stained glass- dimly lit by an unseen light source. Moving toward the believed location of the conduit, they find an odd room in a side corridor with no décor. Inside they found a mutilated body sitting in a chair. Upon closer inspection they found the body greatly resembled that of Salvatore Galton. Whether Falgren knew about this or not is unknown. All that is known is that one of the rooms ahead of them contains "Samantha Burke" and their job was to get to her.

"20D" Avers asserts as he looks down at his pulse reading scanner.
Sorry for the delay, was trying to figure out a way to...present this in a better way. I'll be switching characters, if people are ok with that: the aforementioned SOL scanner . Who now has a name: Avers

TL;DR: Basically the team makes their way through the facility and find out the conduit is likely a woman believed to be named "Samantha Burke". Said woman has the appearance of a adolescent or late teen and seems to be able to instantly heal wounds. She also skin like stone , basically. Also there are seemingly two Galtons walking around and a bunch of holographic Moro's in various positions.

Altogether I would say there are about 6 SOL squad members, with two staying behind to guard the living Galton. This doesn't include the Atlas spy who is likely communicating with Falgren in addition to some of the SOL team.

The Conduit was of great importance to Moro's ventures. That's why she was kept in the dark, out of sight and hard to reach. That's why she was kept under direct watch by three soldiers at a time. That was why Stroud, when he fabricated his background to impress Moro's personal army, made sure he came off as steady - obedient - and desperate enough to put up with weirdness.

Of course he was the lucky jarhead who pulled duty watching the Conduit.

When he took his last bathroom break an hour ago, Stroud dumped out his canteen on the rocks. He came back to 20D, took up his post with Lariat and Sgt. Fang and went about business as usual - stand around the dirty little mineshaft of a cell and watch the Conduit do nothing.

And when he heard the chime in the back of his skull - his short-range transceiver booting up as it detected a SOL scanner with 100 meters - he tossed Lariat his canteen and asked him to fill it up. Lariat reached the imposing gunmetal door to the cell and had his hand on it when Stroud's bullet perforated the back of his skull. The door was now painted red, Lariat was a ragdoll heap in the moist dirt, and Stroud had snapped around and leveled his rifle at Fang. Fang's rifle was, likewise, leveled at Stroud. "Easy there, Sergeant... easy. Don't do something stupid over Lariat, of all people. Take it easy." Stroud cocks his head to one side to depress a comm button hardwired into his neck, keeping a finger on his rifle's trigger. The comm buzzed to life, patching into the nearest Sol radio and accessing their network. "Cain, I hope that's your boys coming down the hall - I've gone and been a very rude house guest."

Cain pressed a finger to his ear.

"Oh good. I was wondering when you'd do that. It's a damn good thing you gave me time to get Salvon locked down, at least"

Cain gave a quick nod, signalling his team to breach the door. In one quick bang, the entire team rushed through the door, weapons and voices raised.

"Easy boys, this is one of ours"

Cain lowers his weapon, looks Stroud up and down, then glances over at the cell. He contemplates it for a moment before turning back to Stroud.

"I assume you have access then?"

"Keycard on my belt." Stroud kept his rifle pulled on Sgt. Fang until Cain's men went about disarming him and binding his wrists. Only then did Stroud let his arms go slack. He hands the card to Cain.

"Here, take it. Sooner we're out of here, the better. Less time Moro's soldiers have to get reorganized, the better."

Avers grimaces as he looks down at Lariat's corpse. He walks to Cain's side and whispers "That...could be problematic. ". He takes in a deep breath as he looks at stain glass window situated across the hall: it depicted Saint Longinus piercing Christ with his "Holy Lance". He then proceeds over to Strout, all the time his eyes dart around his surroundings- suspect.

"Was Galton's "death" intentional or incidental? a rather explicit implication being made with the question.

He begins to pace around, looking down at the motion tracker on his gun; he sees several dots encroaching on the room from both sides and then suddenly disappear. Skeptical, he pulls down his heat vision goggles and looks around but no heat traces are picked up.

    "Hm.". Avers continues pacing.
