I would LOVE to wear my Hezen armor for the Int and Dis bonuses but then I'd lose spawning with grenades charged. Hmm. Situational I guess. Maybe I'll go with raid gear for PvE. I need to level FWC cuz they have gauntlets I really would like to have.
Weren't there people in the raid last night who were specifically holding out for the helmet from hard mode to get to 30, even if they could do it easier just wearing an exotic helmet they don't like?

So, I got raid boots last night and can hit 30. That sounds all great and all, but the raid set + helmet puts me waaaaaaaay over the intellect cap. Win some, lose some.
I'm at the same point. I just want a full set of raid gear. I just need boots. Are they the stats or perks I want? Not really but I look amazing and I'll hopefully get to 30 once I get those boots. Running VoG after that is just for shots at better versions.
There is no "holding out" going on. There is "useless farming of materials" to upgrade sub-optimal items that will be quickly replaced once a better alternative path to 30+ is available. Essentially, the path to 30 is filled with useless loot that we're stuck with.
Edit: Even worse, just trying to get to 30 simply negates any gear choice the game might've gave you. One has to wonder what they were thinking.

Every time I see a clip of that ViDoc or whatever that had the Bungie guy talking about players being able to work to customize the way they look at level cap, I think of the Tengu helmet and shed a single tear.
So much promised, so little delivered.

That might be the only way I will ever hit lvl 30 unless things change drastically with new DLC. Hard mode might be off limit for me until The game gives me more shard and the RNGesus plays nice with me in normal mode. I do have an exotic helmet so even though is saddens me to know that To ge to 30 I'll have to say goodby to my Heart of praxic Fire... but I guess its for a good cause. I'm used to it since I have to toss it out anyway when raiding to get to 28 anyway.
That's the big chunk of my current disenchantment with the game. I'm from WoW. I'm used to changing pieces of gear in and out to reach various desired outcomes. That was before reforging was even a thing and you could change stats. Of course you eventually had a Best in Slot loadout, but you had multiple ways to get stronger and tweak gear to suit your needs.
There is no such thing in Destiny. You wear that raid gear + that exotic helmet. Or else.
I'm sitting at 28 and in no rush to hit 30. I'm not planning to use shards on any of the vendor purples I am wearing. If I eventually get Raid drops I'll think about it, but with the DLC coming up I may save my mats. I did max level my Symbiote helmet in order to hit 28 though.
Does an expansion basically mean they'll need to give us a lvl 28 mode, level 30 mode and possibly a level 32 mode? That way people who can't hit 30 now have an alternative way to gear up, see the old VOG mode and the new harder content? I sure hope they have more than one raid at different difficulties. I'd rather see another 28/30 so you have two things to run a week and one 30/32. Then a second DLC might have another 30/32 and a 32/34 or something.

Well if we look at VoG there is a level 26 and level 30 version. Both doable by very skilled players (world first types) that did it 1-2 levels below cap. So the next raid would potentially be 28-32. With the new legendary armor allowing you to reach level 30, while the level 28 raid gear will get you to 32.
That's if they keep going the way they are going. Maybe they'll find a different way to do things.
Actually I just thought about it a bit more. We have a level 28 and 30 version of VoG. arms/chest/feet in Normal and Helm + Awesome weapons in Hard. We need another one exactly like that only have helm/arms/feet in normal and Chest + Awesome weapons from Hardmode. Running both normal allows you to 30. If you want a full set of one, run the Hardmodes for the missing pieces. Want those awesome weapons, run those Hardmodes.
Dare I say Class specific set bonuses to encourage people to complete sets?
Completed VoG for the first time last night. Took about an hour and change with the group I was with. Got all the chests, beat all the bosses. Walked away with a new Shader and upgrade materials. No armor -- no weapons.
Tagged along for the Nightfall and got a Legendary Scout Rifle.
I forget, does Weekly Heroic give coins and Nightfall gives random rewards? Trying to figure out my fastest path to getting some shards to hit 28. I did the Daily Heroic last night and got (shocker) two energy. This morning I did a public event and got (shocker) an energy. May try the Daily when I get home to see if I luck into shards.
Much thanks to @Cid29 and @booker for running me through both the Weekly Heroic and downing Xyor finally. Wound up doing that strike 3 times last night, and probably would have crashed and burned without the help.

Weekly Heroic is 3,6,9 coins depending on difficulty, 9 max available per week. Nightfall is random, last night my group got Mask Of The Third Man, Thunderlord, and 10 Shards

Yeah daily + first public event with 3 gold stars are you best bet. After this, it's even more random with you hoping to get a purple armor than you can disassemble to get some shards. I've been stock to 28 for ever because I can't get shards. I only have energy. I have 60 energy and counting and still looking for shards.
If you are working on some reputation with crucible/vanguards/new monarchy/FWC or dead orbit, every time you go up a faction level, they send you an item in the mail. there might be a chance it will be a purple armor that you can dissasemble if needed to get shards.

Wow eventually got there, but originally when MC was the raid you were in pretty much the same situation you're in in destiny. I have to laugh how often games get compared to WoW after WoW was around for years on end.
I realize destiny should have seen the issues WoW had, but its not exactly a fair comparison to a game thats been around what 10 years?
I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
Also just straight up buying purples with crucible or vanguard marks is how I got shards when I ran out.
Wow, I didn't even think of that. I almost scrapped my Queen's chestpiece before I remembered that they took away the upgrade material for doing that. If you scrap armor, is it guaranteed to get at least 1 shard, or is it random for energy as well? I'm guessing the former.
Building off that, when people say to "level up" gear before scrapping it, do they mean just getting the upgrades unlocked? I can't imagine that actually putting materials into armor then scrapping it would provide increased returns on materials.

Obviously, they should have learned from the mistakes that WoW made in the beginning and put in all these complicated moving parts and hoped everything would work the first time because it should because this is all simple easy stuff to build and make according to the google search I just did. Exactly like last-gen/new-gen console features. :P

I would not be shocked if the DLC introduced new upgrade materials for post-30 gear.
Just to check with the Weekly Heroic, if you do it at a lower-than-max level and get, say, 3 or 6 coins, you can still do it at a higher level to get those few more, right? Just that I'm certain with the Daily Heroic the other day, we did it at, like, 26 and got 1 Ascendant Material each, then tried it again on 28 and got nothing.
Well, looks like I'll be 28 when I get home from work, in that case. I have 148 Vanguard marks that I was debating spending on a weapon from the armory, but I already have Timur's Lash, Thorn, Hard Light, The Comedian and Epitaph. No reason to buy anything from him. Only other item I want from a vendor requires Crucible points, so I'll just snag a pair of armor pieces to shard.
Bungie: Look guys, we gave you shaders, ships, ghost skins, and like 5 different weapon types you can use to customize yourself. If you want to get to 30 you'll fly around in your brown ship, carry your Suros Regime, wear the same chatterwhite shader all the other raiders have, show off your custom ghost, and take your raid armor with it's busted ass RNG secondary stats and you'll like it.

I dunno. It seems at least worth mentioning that a game released in 2014 seems to be making some of the same mistakes as a game released in 2004. One could certainly hope that the industry as a whole has learned SOMETHING in the last decade.
I mean, if I tried to do my job based on the ideas and norms of a decade ago, I'd probably get canned right quick.

In previous weeks that is how it worked, I don't know if they changed it. You could do the Weekly Heroic Strike at 22 solo and get 3 coins, then do it at 28 and you would get the remaining 6.

I was about to do the same thing since I'm desperate for shards myself but when starting to do raids, I'm severly lacking in secondary weapons of some types to bring shield down so I ended up spending my venguard shards on a fire fusion rifle and almost have enough for the void fusion rifle on the crucible vendor.

In my experience, Daily Heroic is a one-shot. Even at 27, the 28 level wasn't tough last night. Not sure about today's (what is it again?). But yeah, you'll only get one chance at rewards, so go as high in difficulty as you can handle.

Naw man, Reaper was in level 28 void gear so he could level it to 29 when he wants to go void.

If there's one thing (okay two) I could take from wow and put in this game it would be reforging and transmogrification.
Oh, armor set bonuses wouldn't be bad either because as of right now other than getting thirty there's real no difference or reason to the armor.
